fundraiser into a math lesson for their students.
Monclova Christian kicked off the week by
dropping off two buckets of pennies on day one of
the competition. They held their penny war a week earlier due to student
testing. The schools had some flexibility as to how they did the fundraiser. Toledo
Christian opted out of the Penny War and raised $519 with a jeans day.
St. Rose in Perrysburg collected the most pennies during the week with a total
of $2,532. Central City Ministry of Toledo school Queen of Apostles raised $579 in
pennies from their students. Pretty impressive considering 93% of the students at
Queen qualify for free or reduced lunch.
NOSF is also grateful for Taylor Automotive’s
sponsorship of this area-wide fundraiser.
It covered the
school prizes
and any other
costs associated
with the event.
Steve Taylor,
owner of Taylor
Automotive
said of this effort, “We
were so excited to participate in the Pennies to
Dollars for Scholars endeavor. We are honored to
partner with an organization that helps make private
education possible for hard-working members of our community.”
It was definitely a team effort and the students of NOSF will truly benefit from
this fundraiser. Thank You to all the teachers, staff and students for all your hard
work in counting and collecting all those pennies!

Education for Upward Mobility Presentation
NOSF invited Michael Petrilli, the president of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute and
award winning author, to visit Toledo in March to talk about his new book. Mr. Petrilli
spoke to 50 friends of the Northwest Ohio Scholarship Fund in the McMaster Family Center
Auditorium on the evening of Tuesday, March 22.
Petrilli is a research fellow at Stanford University’s
Hoover Institute and executive editor of Education Next.
He has authored other books including The Diverse
Schools Dilemma: A Parent’s Guide to Socioeconomically
Mixed Public Schools and co-editor of Knowledge at the
Core: Don Hirsch, Core Knowledge, and the Future of the
Common Core.
Mr. Petrilli recently edited a new book entitled, Education for Upward
Mobility. The book seeks answers to how we can help children born into
poverty enter the middle class as adults and what role schools can play. Petrilli’s presentation addressed today’s
challenges including low upward mobility, growing inequality in income and a widening achievement gap by class.
He noted that children born into single parent families with a high school diploma or less had increased by 45%
since 1950. He discussed the success sequence which included three norms: Complete high school, Work full-time,
and Wait until age 21 to marry and have children.
After Mr. Petrilli’s presentation, guests were given a copy of his new book and had the opportunity to have him
sign it personally.
Raise the Cap 2016!
T
his year’s Raise the Cap event was an awesome night for baseball
and the Northwest Ohio Scholarship Fund. The event brought in
over $36,000 for scholarships in addition to providing a wonderful
evening for families. Thanks to the generosity of a number of sponsors
including this year’s Grand Slam Sponsors Morgan Stanley, Comfort Line
Windows, an anonymous donor and Dr. Gregory Black, the event was a
success. Others supported the event at the Home Run
Sponsorship level and had a chance to attend
the event.
For those sponsors who could not attend the
event, they had an opportunity to send a scholarship
family of four with a Double Sponsorship. Thanks to
the generosity of our sponsors, NOSF was able to host eleven scholarship families at the event.
Among them was the Rutledge family who had the chance to go to the pitcher’s mound along
with Grand Slam sponsor Morgan Stanley and have their daughter Sarah throw the first pitch.
The evening began with an All-American
buffet dinner in the 3rd floor of the Roost
which has been expanded and updated.
Following dinner there was a raffle of
fun prizes including gift certificates to
restaurants and other Mud Hen’s games.
Guests were treated to boxes of Cracker Jack which were
compliments of the Wow Foundation of Waterford Bank. After
the drawing, guests were able to walk right to their reserved
seats and enjoy the game between the Toledo Mud Hens and
the Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders.
