Learning to Let Go
“Learning to let go” is an exploration of my personal uncertainties and a realisation that
there are certain aspects about myself that I do not need to understand completely in order
to grow. Sometimes fixating on the need to ‘understand’ keeps one frozen and stops your
inner growth. There are some things in one’s life that one will never understand or will need
to be revisited at a later stage for better clarity. Each painting is and exploration into and an
acknowledgement of the value of not fully understanding ones past through my chosen
medium of paint.
So much of my emotional journey is echoed in my process of painting which is not about a
predetermined path but rather a meandering experience living. When I paint a work there
are many technical unknowns, sometimes the work get painted over numerously times
before an images stays. This comes about as I am constantly searching for tones, colours,
marks and subjects that correspond to an emotion that I am feeling strongly at the time.
There are also times when the subconscious elements in the creative process teach and
directing me- the process of image making becomes a source of new life lessons.
“Learning to let go” is an open-ended body of work that is broadly about realising that letting
go of what is not understood is an often crucial element in one’s personal growth in life and
painting alike.
