“
n emergent world asks us to
stand in a different place. We can no
longer stand at the end of something
we visualize in detail and plan
backwards from that future. Instead,
we must stand at the beginning,
clear in our intent, with a willingness
to be involved in discovery. The
world asks that we focus less on
how we can coerce something to
make it conform to our designs and
focus more on how we can enter
into the experience and then notice
what comes forth. It asks that we
participate more than plan.”

oncern America’s Developing a
C
Heart that Yearns for Justice Seminar
to promote self-reliance
among materially poor
people throughout the
world in a socially just
and sustainable manner.
We weave together
the lives of caring people
everywhere so that
the impoverished in our
world have what they
need to live a decent life.
Through education and
engagement, we invite
people from all walks of
life to place building a
just world at the heart
of their social endeavors
and their efforts at
building community.
Participants experience techniques
that can be used later in their local
settings, which can help people
working together to attend to the
task at hand, the relationships
within the group and the processes
used. The seminar provides
an environment for learning
about oneself, the people and
organizations with whom one is
involved, and areas of concern in
the wider world. The seminar is
especially effective when two or
more members of a staff or team
attend together.

Concern America works
is a three-day experience offered for
persons with diverse professional
and spiritual backgrounds whose
common bond is the desire to
build a better world. The seminar
includes one day each on the
themes of community building,
global justice, and spirituality.
It affords an opportunity for
participants to connect with a circle
of people beyond those in their
local workplace or organization.
Its methodology is adapted from
the popular education model
developed by the great Brazilian
educator Paulo Freire.
Developing a Heart that Yearns
TforheJustice
