Support Ben needs at school In June 2012 Ben was diagnosed with a heart murmur and has shortness of breath. Before school he takes a medication to help with shortness of breath. You may see him taking deep breaths when he is running or when it hot outside. He can go to the nurse and get medicine if he feels it is getting worse. Ben is a good judge of when he needs medication. Ben may stutter when he is excited or has lots of things he wants to say. It helps to ask him to “think about it” in the moment he is stuck. Also, this happens when he is out of breath. Words containing “L”s are difficult for Ben to pronounce. A simple reminder of how to pronounce the word is helpful to Ben. He was in speech therapy to help with this. Ben is learning to take his turn for his teacher’s attention. We remind him that it is different at home than at school. The teacher has lots of kids to pay attention to. He will wait his turn when his teacher asks him to . At the beginning of the year, it will take him a while to get comfortable with waiting. Ben tells us any time he gets in “trouble”. We usually follow up with his teacher so we can help him understand the situation and process as a family. He may not have gotten in trouble even though he feels like he did.
