Resolution of Recognition
#HCSMakeItCount Award
WHEREAS, the function of a Board of Education is to strive for excellence in all phases of
educational programs, and;
WHEREAS, the Hardin County Board of Education deems it fitting and proper that significant
awards and honors be recognized by the Board, and;
WHEREAS, the Hardin County Board of Education believes in work ethic and the ability of
students, staff and community members dedicating themselves totally to education of our next
generation of leaders, and;
WHEREAS, the district’s theme for the 2016-17 school year is #HCSMakeItCount and the
Hardin County Board of Education believes in these characteristics so greatly that it will recognize a
HCS student & staff member and a member of the Hardin County community at its regularly scheduled
meeting each month during the school year with the #HCSMakeItCount Award;
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED THAT the Hardin County Board of Education, in a regular
meeting on January 19, 2017, does hereby recognize the following for earning the #HCSMakeItCount
Award for January 2017:

Mackenzie Ponder-Foree, a fifth grader at Heartland Elementary School, created an online fundraising campaign to raise money for children at Heartland with outstanding balances from unpaid
lunch fees. At the beginning, Mackenzie set a goal to raise $500. Within 24 hours, that goal was
met. Mackenzie has raised more than $1,500. That amount covers the majority of the school’s
outstanding balance. The money will be used to decrease amounts from all student accounts with
an outstanding balance and cover the complete balance for some.

Shelly Haun is a third-grade teacher at Lincoln Trail Elementary School. She is also co-chair of
the school’s Wellness Committee. In that role, she has strategically led the faculty in a schoolwide service initiative with students. Each classroom incorporates ideas of service for others and
represents their acts with a service chain displayed throughout the school. Mrs. Haun has led
fun culture-building activities with certified and classified staff such as "food challenge cookoffs" where staff members compete with their recipes for the "Silver Spoon" award. She serves
as Academic Team Coach. This year, Lincoln Trail hosted the District Governor's Cup. She
organized the service of middle and high school Beta Club students for the event. She is the
mentor for a pre-service teacher from Western Kentucky University and is always looking for
ways to contribute to the education profession. It is for these reasons that Mrs. Shelly Haun is
deserving of this award.

Amaray recently presented a $20,000 grant to East Hardin Middle School to implement its
Project Lead the Way program. Through PLTW’s pathways in engineering, computer science
and biomedical science, students learn problem-solving strategies, critical and creative thinking
and how to communicate and collaborate. East Hardin Middle School joins more than 9,000
schools across the United States in offering PLTW programs to its students. EHMS Interim
Principal Beth Nickell says that the school could not be more excited to welcome Project Lead
the Way to East Hardin. Mrs. Susan Hatfield, the PLTW instructor, has a strong background in
engineering and math. Her excitement for this class is contagious. It’s so important for students
to explore new areas of interest and develop the STEM skills that will differentiate and advance
them in the workforce later. Mrs. Nickell, her students, faculty, staff and the rest of the HCS
family are truly thankful to Amaray.
