T o a c c o m p l i s h th es e t a s k s , a c o m p r e h e n s i v e a s s e s s m e n t w a s a d m i n i s t e r e d to 12,432 c o l l e g e f r e s h m e n in 31 in s titu tio n s o f h ig h e r e d u c a t io n in the m o n t h s o f A p r i l o r M a y in 1964. T h e fo llo w in g s e c t i o n s c h a r a c t e r i z e the student s a m p l e , and the m a t e r i a l s and s c a l e s c o n t a in e d in the student s u r v e y . Student S a m p le S e v e r a l s t a t i s t i c s c h a r a c t e r i z e the student s a m p le : seven per c e n t w e r e e n r o l l e d in ju n io r c o l l e g e s , t w e lv e p e r c e n t in f o u r y e a r u n d e r gr a d u a te c o l l e g e s , and e i g h t y - o n e p e r c e n t in u n i v e r s i t i e s . A b o u t 15 p e r c e n t o f th es e f r e s h m e n w e r e stu den ts in p r i v a t e c o l l e g e s , w h ile 85 p e r ce n t w e r e students in p u b lic c o l l e g e s . c o e d u c a t io n a l c o l l e g e s . A b o u t 95 p e r c e n t a tten d ed F in a lly , 20 p e r ce n t w e r e e n r o l l e d in c o l l e g e s in the N o r t h e a s t , 31 p e r c e n t in c o l l e g e s in the South, 20 p e r c e n t in c o l l e g e s in the M id w e s t , 26 p e r c e n t in c o l l e g e s in the M ou n tain s and P l a i n s s ta te s , but o n ly 3 p e r c e n t in c o l l e g e s on the W e s t C o a s t .
