Creative Writing: Romeo and Juliet Grade Level: 9th Grade English Time: 23 hours (Multiple days may be required) Overview Objective Standards Materials Procedure Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a piece of literature that the 9th grade curriculum covers. Students will compare the ending to the ending in the modern movie of Romeo and Juliet (staring Leonardo Dicaprio) and the original version by Shakespeare. This lesson will test students' creativity when they have to brainstorm alternative endings to the play. Students will brainstorm alternative endings then proceed to publish the new stories on the website SlapaStory.com. Students in the class will vote on ending which they like best. Students will work individually on this assignment. Students will be able to compare and contrast the original Romeo and Juliet to that of the modern movie version. Students will be able to write an original alternative ending to Romeo and Juliet using proper mechanics and grammar. Students will be able to post writing assignment on SlapaStory and make at least 2 comments on their peer’s submissions. 9.4.1 Organization and Focus: Discuss ideas for writing with classmates, teachers, and other writers and develop drafts alone and collaboratively. 9.5.1 Write biographical or autobiographical narratives or short stories that: • describe a sequence of events and communicate the significance of the events to the audience. • locate scenes and incidents in specific places. • describe with specific details the sights, sounds, and smells of a scene and the specific actions, movements, gestures, and feelings of the characters; in the case of short stories or autobiographical narratives, use interior monologue (what the character says silently to self) to show the character's feelings. 9.6.1 Grammar and Mechanics of Writing: Identify and correctly use clauses, both main and subordinate; phrases, including gerund, infinitive, and participial; and the mechanics of punctuation, such as semicolons, colons, ellipses, and hyphens Student will need: grammer reference book, notebook, and pencil Teacher will provide: Romeo and Juliet text handouts, film, television, and computers. 1. Teacher will ask students if they have ever watched a movie and disliked the ending. Teacher will ask students for the name of the movie, how it ended, and why they didn't like the ending. Inform students that they will have an opportunity to re‐ write the ending of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. 2. Teacher will have students read aloud the play of Romeo and Juliet. Once the play is complete teacher will ask students to discuss and summarize the events leading up to the ending. 3. Teacher will plat the modern movie's version of the ending scene to see the differences between the modern version of Romeo and Juliet and the original text. Teach will ask students to point out some of the differences that they noticed between the two versions. (Examples: 1. In the modern movie Romeo kills himself with a gun rather than a knife. 2. In the modern movie, when they were in the tomb, Romeo and Juliet glanced at each other for a second and realized that there had been a mix‐up.) Ask students which version they prefer and why. 4. After students have read/watched and discussed both endings teacher will tell them to begin brainstorming ideas for their own ending to Romeo and Juliet. 5. When students have completed brainstorming and created a rough draft they should upload it to www.SlapaStory.com 6. Teacher will assign students to read through other peers endings and then vote on which one is their favorite. 7. Teacher will assign students to post at least two comments on their peer’s stories using the SlapaStory comment section. Evaluation Students will be evaluated based on length requirment, spelling and grammer, and creativity of paper.
