Ranger Reading & Literature Prog ram
K-3 Ranger Ready
Help your child learn about antonyms, or opposites, and boost his/her vocabulary. It is called Antonym Bingo and all you need is a paper,
pencils, bowl, and pennies. Think of 25 pairs of opposites together (cold and hot, top and bottom). Make a bingo card for each of you by
writing the 25 words on a grid with 5 rows and 5 columns. Then write to opposites on slips of paper and place them in the bowl. Take
turns drawing a slip from the bowl, find it on the card, and place a penny on the space of the opposite word. You win when you are the
first to cover 5 words in a row. A similar bingo game could be make for synonyms too.

Sprout News
Preschool teacher Lisa Harris reports that there has been a lot of activity in the preschool room this spring.
Louise Walkowiak, the school librarian, received a grant from the Ready to Read foundation. She used the
money to purchase a circle time rug that would help the preschoolers better their reading skills. This colorful area rug gives defined spaces for the preschoolers to sit during our morning meetings. Before the rug
the children had a hard time staying in one place to listen to stories (and I’ve been told you can’t glue
their bottoms down.) Mrs. Walkowiak also used the grant money to buy a dollhouse for the class. The
house has promoted social skills, conversations and representational play between the children.
Before we left for spring break, we celebrated learning the letters of the alphabet and the
letter sounds with a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom party.
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is the tropical story of how all the lower case letters venture
up the coconut tree and the Mama’s, Papas, Uncles and Aunts come and rescue them
when they fall out of the tree. The party consisted of super readers in super costumes,
coconut tasting and of course, lots of letter games.
When we came back, we were surprised with the addition of a SINK in the classroom. A
big THANK YOU to Sean and Leona Egeland of Ridgeline plumbing who donated the work and supplies
for a much needed addition of a sink right in our room! Although we have gotten by with using squirt
bottles, a jug with a spout and taking items home to wash…it is so nice to wash hands, paintbrushes, and
whatever else, anytime we want to! We used the sink to fill our water table by forming a bucket brigade.
Through cooperation, we learned a gallon is heavy and it takes 7 of them to fill up our water table!
Preschool is a great place to be when you are 3 or 4, and learning is so much fun!
