the Community’s Call
West Boxford Grange is using its Agricultural
Education Grant to bring to life a vacant 1.7-acre lot
next to its Lincoln Hall meeting place. The Town of Boxford bought this land in 2011 from the Colby Family for
the dual purposes of creating a parking lot and a passive recreation area. Because of financial constraints,
the Town has only managed to build the parking lot,
leaving the rest of the land as an unsightly, weeded lot.
When completed, the park will be called "Colby Park."
West Boxford Grange has passed its first hurdle,
i.e., receiving permission from the Boxford Board of Selectmen to enhance the vacant lot.
West Boxford Grange's plans include moving the
existing parking lot to a site closer to Lincoln Hall, clearing the lot and replacing the weeds with shrubs, plants,
walking path, grass area for children's play, and picnic
tables. An area will be set aside for a habitat for Monarch Butterflies, an endangered species. The Park's
landscaping was designed by Charlene Maunsell, a local licensed professional landscape designer. Charlene
will consult as the Grange moves forward.
Plans are underway to enlist the Community's financial support. West Boxford Grange will hold a live
Auction on Saturday, April 29, starting at 3 p.m. Support
from Grange members and the Community is a Grant
requirements. Education programs will be held at Lincoln Hall to instruct residents in the proper way to plant
shrubs and plants in preparation for the work to come.

From the Editor’s Desk
It seems like winter is arriving a bit late for those of us on
the Northshore. April has rolled in like a lion. We can only
hope that April Showers bring May flowers adage is true.
Lot of things are happening at Granges, especially since
it is Grange Month.
The National website had lots of info on
how to put your Grange in the spotlight and hopefully gain
members.
Congratulations to those that participated to the Grange
Showcase Extravaganza. The results for the talent contest
and the bakeoff are listed in this edition.
The Lecturer, Junior Director, and the Youth Committee
report on the functions that are coming up. There are rules for
contests and applications for the Youth Conference.
Degrees are being performed in the Southeastern area
and the Central area.
Grange secretaries are reminded that the price for Golden Sheaf certificates have increased. This information is on
the Thinking of you page.
I’ve got the camp bug and can’t
wait until mud season is over. Also waiting for the last of the show to get off my
garden patch so I can plant my swiss
chard! When the flowers of Spring bloom
don’t forget to stop and smell them.
Wishing all a Happy Easter.

From the Master’s Desk
The First Degree of our Order describes Springtime
on the farm as the season of preparation. It is the careful
preparation of the soil for the seed that will result in a generous harvest. Will your Grange be among those Granges
that have prepared the groundwork that will sustain them
into the future? Or will your Grange be like the garden that
has fallen into neglect and become fallow?
Your Grange must effectively plan and work diligently to obtain the results that will promote your Grange. As your
Grange begins its preparations for a great season, let us remember the lessons of hope and perseverance. Hope, as in
a goal, and perseverance, a commitment to obtain that
goal. With hope and perseverance as your motto your
Grange will be successful.
The State Grange and the National Grange are committed to helping all our Granges in their efforts to achieve
their goals. The National Grange has produced a number of
valuable PowerPoint Presentations to help grow your
Grange, retain membership, and ways to successfully communicate and connect with your members. To take advantage of these tools please contact me for the downloads.
I wish for you a joyous Easter and a productive
springtime!

Lecturer’s Column
“To
Make the Best Better”, the motto of 4-H clubs, is doing just that for young people. In the early 1900s, A. B. Graham, a principal in Ohio, promoted vocational agriculture and
formed after school clubs with officers, projects, meetings,
and record-keeping requirements. The first club was called
‘The Tomato Club’ or the ‘Corn Growing Club’. When Congress created the Cooperative Extension Service in 1914, it
included the boys’ and girls’ club work, which became known
as 4-H (head, heart, hands, health) clubs. The goal of
‘learning by doing’ remains the focus of the organization today. Not only do the youngsters become skilled in specific
3
areas, they are also developing citizenship and leadership
through community service and public speaking.
I had the honor of being invited to attend the Worcester
County 4-H Awards Banquet by my grandniece Sarah and
grandnephew Sumner last month. The awards are based upon the records 4-Hers submit annually. Sarah received recognition for her work in her dairy and teen clubs, as an Ambassador, and as an intern at Old Sturbridge Village. After showing
one dairy calf and one beef calf two years ago, Sumner chose
to show three beef animals this past summer. Focusing on developing his skill in showing, he attended some extra workshops in addition to his monthly club meetings. For his effort
and improvement, Sumner was awarded the Raymond Harper
Memorial Cup. Mr. Harper, a lifelong farmer and former mayor
of Leominster, passed away in December. His family has donated this annual, rotating trophy to be presented to a junior 4H member who excels in the beef program. Sumner is very
proud to be the first to have his name engraved on this award.
In the presentation, it was mentioned that Sumner is also
a member of the Grange. This prompted me to reflect on the
relationship between these two organizations. Our Junior
Granges and 4-H have so much in common. The State
Grange has established a partnership with the 4-H and encourages the local Granges to do so as well. Is there a club in your
town? Has your Grange invited the 4-H leader and members
to one of your meetings? This could be a great opportunity for
a program – members tell about their projects, practice their
visual presentations before a competition, or demonstrate how
they run a meeting. Since they are required to do community
service work, could the club members do spring clean-up outside your Grange hall or assist your members in holding an agriculture education workshop or other event? Having the 4Hers at your Grange will also bring their parents, another great
opportunity to show off our organization!

Grange Showcase Extravaganza
Thank you to all who attended this year’s Extravaganza and to
Central Community Grange for hosting the event. What a
great afternoon of talent and fellowship! I recognize and appreciate the effort the participants put into preparing for the Talent Contest and being on the stage to entertain us.

There are fourteen opportunities to enter in this year’s

Northeast Lecturer’s Conference
Granges will receive this year’s program and registration materials for the annual conference early next month. Vermont will be hosting this 102nd conference at Castleton University July 31st – August 2nd. To carry out the theme of
‘School Days’, Massachusetts will depict ‘Real Life Math Skills’.
I am looking for volunteers to be part of the program. Rehearsal will be held during the registration time on July 31st at 2:00,
and our program is scheduled for 6:15 that evening. If you
have any questions before you receive the materials, please let
me know.
Grange Quote of the Month: “…Thus, our Order binds us together in fraternity, and, by encouraging education will advance
to a higher state of perfection the science of agriculture. We
encourage the planting of trees, fruits, and flowers, by which to
enhance the value and increase the attractions of our home;
adorning them with those beauties so lavishly given us by the
God of Nature. There is no calling more elevating to the mind
than agriculture, when viewed as presented in our Order...” (Installation of Officers, opening charge)
Spring is a good time to honor agriculture, promote our
organization, and invite others to join us at open houses, work5

shops, roadside clean-ups, dinners, award nights, and other
programs and activities. Lecturers, please remember to report
all meetings and community activities on your quarterly reports. If the March quarterly report is postmarked by April
10th, your Grange will be entered into a drawing to ‘win-aprogram’.

Upton Bowling Team Wins 1st
Left to right: Joe Givani, Gina Lupachini, Ken Paulson, Sophia
Garrepy, Ashley Vitkauskas, & Carl Porter
At the Massachusetts State Grange 2017 Bowling Tournament, the Upton Grange team won First place. Ken Paulson, Team Captain won the High Triple Award. He was joined
by Joe Givani, Gina Lupachini, Sophia Garrepy, Ashley Vitkauskas, and Carl Porter. Unlike many other social organizations, the Grange’s structure allows every member of the family, from school aged children to great-grandparents, an equal
voice. Family is one of the cornerstones on which the Grange
was built. Family values in farm, rural and suburban communities are promoted, taught, and woven into Grange activities
and events. For generations, people have credited their involvement in the Grange with personal growth, character development, leadership skills and confidence. The Grange is
the oldest Non-profit family organization in Upton. Grangers
began meeting in 1880s at the Grange Hall, on 26 School
Street, formally the town's first school built in 1858. Community Service is an integral part of the Grange and they have an
active scholarship program. The Massachusetts State Grange
Bowling Tournament was held at Spencer's Bayberry Lanes
on March 12th. The event was sponsored by the MA State
Grange Youth Committee, led by Tracee Perkins and all money raised from the event went to local charities.

Dartmouth Grange : Land Army
Wanted
Every year for thousands of years, farmers have
ploughed the fields to grow food – for themselves, for others,
and for the animals. And, as the plough gets drawn through the
ground, stones emerge. This is where you come in, you, our
farm neighbor, and hopefully helper. Dartmouth Grange is putting a call out to volunteers willing to pick up stones to help a
Farmer this Earth Day.
“We named this farm Stoney Meadows Farm because the
land is riddled with stones” explains Jim Munger, owner and operator. Jim cut about a 3-acre field with a plough to prepare for
planting this spring and upturned an abundance of stones.
“I have a front-end loader” offers Jim, “so people don’t
have to walk back and forth to carry the rocks away. It’ll be
easy” he adds with a quiet chuckle. Jim is 82 years old and is
still active in farming. He is soft spoken, science literate, and
has the heart of a teacher.
Jim has been involved in agriculture since he was a boy
and shows no signs of stopping. He realizes, however, that
managing a 3-acre crop at this stage in his life may be a bit
much. “I’d like to get the field in good condition for a tenant
farmer” he says with hope for keeping the land in continual use.
“Someone who’d like to try their hand at farming, but has no
place to do it.”
Getting the field in “good condition” means making it inviting for plants to grow and thrive. As the plough turns the soil
over, the vegetable matter (maybe the remains of the previous
crop, or a purposely grown green manure, or just manure) that
resides on top becomes buried and the rate of decay increases,
releasing nutrients in to the soil. While the vegetable matter
goes down under, stones come up.
“Stones are obstacles for new plant life”, Jim states, “So, it’s
best to remove them after they get uplifted. You think you’ve
got them all cleared and next spring you’ve got a few more”.
So, strap on your back support belt, get on those work gloves
and join the army! Dartmouth Grange invites you to spend a
part of your morning helping a farmer this Earth Day, Saturday
April 22nd from 9-11am at Stoney Meadows Farm on 908 Division Road in Dartmouth. Rain date: Sat, April 23rd.
