Visiting Budapest
Budapest is the capital and the largest city of Hungary. It is the country's principal political, cultural,
commercial, industrial and transportation centre located on the banks of the river Danube with approx.
1.75 million inhabitants.
The history of Budapest began with Aquincum, originally a Celtic settlement that became the Roman
capital of Lower Pannonia. Hungarians arrived at this territory in the 9th century. The conquering
Hungarian tribes also considered it as an important strategic domain maintaining their central forces
and resources. Interestingly, that time the settlement was called Pest at both sides of the Danube. The
name Pest may have Slavic origin, meaning “oven”, and may be related to the thermal springs under
the Gellért Hill. In 1241, the Mongols (Tatars) destroyed most of Pest. After they had left the country,
the Buda castle was built and gained great importance during the 12th century.
Buda was the royal residence surrounded by residential area, while Pest operated as a commercial
centre. In the 15th century, during the rule of King Matthias Corvinus, Buda became the political,
cultural and artistic centre of contemporary Europe. The Royal Palace was reconstructed; a library, a
printing house and a college were opened. From the 16th century the city stood under the rule of the
Ottoman Empire, the world famous Turkish Baths were raised during this period. After the Turkish
occupation, from the end of the 17th century, the city was modernized step by step, and the region
entered into a new age of prosperity in the 18th century.
At the first half of the 19th century, Pest became the intellectual centre of Hungary; Pest and Buda and
Óbuda were united under the name Budapest in 1873. It also became the second capital of AustriaHungary. During the 2nd World War most of the city was ruined or damaged, but it was rebuilt between
after 1945.
13
Cited as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, its extensive World Heritage Site includes the
banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter, Andrássy Avenue, Heroes' Square and the Millennium
Underground Railway, the second oldest in the world. Other highlights include a total of 80 geothermal
springs, the world's largest thermal water cave system, second largest synagogue, the third largest
Parliament building and more than 100 museums, exhibition halls and galleries. The city attracts about
2.7 million tourists a year.
Considered a financial hub in Central Europe, it is the 2nd highest ranked Central/Eastern European
city on Innovation Cities' Top 100 index and it is the home of the European Institute of Innovation and
Technology (EIT).
Building of the Hungarian Parliament
H-1055 Budapest, Kossuth tér 1-3.
The Building of the Hungarian Parliament is the seat of the National
Assembly of Hungary, one of Europe's oldest legislative buildings, a
notable landmark in the history of Hungary and a popular tourist
destination of Budapest. It lies on Lajos Kossuth Square, on the bank
of the Danube. The construction of the building was finished in
1902 – based on the plans of Imre Steindl – , and similar to
the Palace of Westminster, the Parliament Building was built in
Gothic Revival style: it has a symmetrical facade and a central
dome. The parliament is also symmetrical from inside and thus
has two absolutely identical parliament halls, out of which one is
used by the politicians, the other one is used for guided tours. With its height of 96 m (315 ft), it is one
of the two tallest buildings in Budapest, along with Saint Stephen's Basilica. The number 96 refers to
the nation's millennium, 1896, and the conquest of the later Kingdom of Hungary in 896.
One of the famous parts of the building is the hexadecagonal (sixteen-sided) central hall, with huge
chambers adjoining it: the Lower House (today the National Assembly meets here) and the Upper
House (until 1945). The Holy Crown of Hungary, which is also depicted in the coat of arms of
Hungary, has been displayed in the central hall since 2000.
