Joseph W. Fordney Elected to Congress!
In November 1898, Fordney defeated incumbent
Democrat Ferdinand Brucker to be elected as a
Republican from Michigan’s 8th congressional
district to the 56th United States Congress. He
was subsequently re-elected to the eleven
succeeding Congresses. Serving from March 4,
1899 to March 3, 1923. Fordney served as the
chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in
the Department of Navy in the 59th Congress;
and the Committee of Ways and Means in the 66th
and 67th Congresses. He co-sponsored the 1922
Fordney–McCumber Tariff. He was also a
delegate
to
the
Republican
National
Conventions in 1908, 1924, and 1928.

This view depicts the opening on Ippel’s
Annex in 1910. In 1905, Julius Ippel’s dry
goods business moved into the building
constructed by lumber baron Thomas
Merrill on the corner of Court and
Michigan. The dry goods store had wooden
floors and overhead tracks that ran sales
receipts and money to the office and
returned with change. The system was
replaced with pneumatic tubes in 1948. The
brothers inherited the dry goods business
from their father after his death in 1922.
They had just returned from service in the
armed forces during WW1. The building
was destroyed by fire on January 29, 2002.
