Learning About La Porte’s Historical Cemetery
R
WRITTEN BY Kelli Grabbe / INTERVIEWED BY Maggie Anderson Eddy – Editor
ecently, Around La
Porte sat down with Ken
Adams, the President of
the La Porte Cemetery Association, to find out more about what
goes on in one of La Porte’s
oldest sites.
The La Porte Cemetery,
located on South 8th Street, was
founded in 1907 by James Sullivan, William Babbitt and J.S.
Johnson. Prior to 1907, Cedarhurst Cemetery was in operation
as the first of La Porte’s final
resting places, just across Little
Cedar Bayou from La Porte
Cemetery. According to oral
history and some limited print,
the story is told of an ongoing
issue with what were considered
outrageous burial fees in the Cedarhurst Cemetery. The burial
fees ranged from $10 - $100.
