RABBI MATTHEW BERGER
From the Rabbi’s desk…
A Wise, Just and Caring Heart
For the last number of
weeks, Jews throughout
the world have been
reading the book of
Deuteronomy. In essence,
the book describes three
great speeches that Moses
shared with the Israelites
as they prepare to enter
the Promised Land of
Israel. Moses’ words are eloquent and his language
resplendent, admirable in their own right, especially from a
man who once described himself as “slow of tongue.”
Over the course of many days, he reminds the people of
their forty years in the wilderness, their experience at Mount
Sinai and the sin of the Golden Calf. He stresses that their
collective history is all a prelude to the present moment. He
rhetorically asks them: “Now Israel, what does Adonai your
God demand of you?”
Moses answers: “Only this – to revere God, to walk in
God’s paths, to love and serve God will all your heart and
soul and to keep God’s commandments, for your good.”
Certainly this is a tall order but a worthy ideal. In this
speech, Moses uses an interesting turn of phrase to describe
the challenge of the task he laid before the people: “Cut
away the thickening about your hearts and stiffen your neck
no more.”
We’ve all heard the phrase about the stiff-necked Jewish
people. Yet the powerful statement found at the beginning of
the verse should draw even more interest. It draws upon the
use of the Hebrew word milah [“to cut”], as in a
circumcision. Why would Moses paint such a vivid picture
of what is, in essence, a surgical procedure?
Moses was stressing the importance of moral sensitivity as
an essential measure of Jewish survival. Just as b’rit milah
[“covenant of circumcision”] has been an integral part of
Jewish identity and survival, so too is the inclination of our
heart.
For many centuries, it was understood that the human heart
was the seed of our intellect. When we define the heart in
this way, we realize that stubbornness and insensitivity can
lead to a toughening of the mind or closed mindedness. An
uncircumcised heart, then, can lead us to take advantage of
the vulnerable and become callous and cruel toward others
who we deem as “different.”
With this in mind, it becomes clear that our very survival as
a moral and just society depends on our ability to keep an
open mind and a heart filled with sensitivity. By
remembering the b’rit or covenant we’ve made with God
and our historic role as a people committed to helping the
stranger and caring for the oppressed, we will always go
from strength to strength.
In a world where rhetoric seems more partisan and close
minded than ever, it is imperative that we stop for a moment
and ask ourselves, “What does God demand of us?” As we
approach the Jewish New Year 5777, let us respond with
hearts filled with wisdom and intuition. Let us strive to live
with compassion and understanding.
Shana tova – may your New Year be filled with health,
kindness and love.

From the President…
As I write this, it is one week after Membership Open House
and Brunch and one day after the start of the religious school
for this year.
Ellen Karas
And, I don’t even think this is our busiest week.
In the span of one week, there were many events happening at
CBSW. Let’s start with the membership open house and
brunch. Kaye Brouse, Maura Shapiro and Emily Semansky
representing membership committee, put on a fantastic
welcoming brunch. Rabbi Berger, Helen Richard and many
volunteers were there to help the effort.
Did you know that we have tenants? Just as we start the
school year with many events, so do our tenants. We rent our
classrooms and other facilities as much as possible when we
do not need to use them. These regular pay rent and that rent
income helps to offset our building expenses, which
sometimes are considerable. Right now as I write this note,
CBSW is dealing with one of our ac units not functioning. For
those of us who deal with these problems at our homes
sometimes, we know how very expensive these repairs or
replacements can be. Without these tenants we would have
more financial hardship. David Cassidy and Nathan Shapiro
donate much of their time as volunteers to work directly with
the tenants to keep things running as smoothly as possible.
We also make our social hall and other facilities available for
rent for one-time events for organizations and individuals to
use for their activities. Our priority has always been and will
always be on our congregation to use our facilities for our
services, religious school, gatherings and social activities.
Every congregant can rent our facilities as well for member
rates for their activities and events.
Directly following the membership brunch there was staff
training for religious school. Helen Richard, assisted by Rabbi
Berger, Maura Schofield and Andy Thorson gave some
valuable training to all of religious school faculty, including
the Madrichim (7th grade and above helpers). Every one of
our faculty personnel is a member of CBSW. Without these
dedicated volunteers we literally could not educate our youth.
We had our monthly Friday Night Lights Service with the
band and a special fondue oneg, provided by the Stein,
Moses, Davis and Schofield families. The chocolate fondue
was delicious. Serena Davis makes the calls to sign up
families for onegs. The reminders now come directly from
Jen, our CBSW office staff. She will email you the reminder
notices. If you haven’t done onegs before, you aren’t alone
doing onegs as there are other families helping with onegs as
well. When our onegs were in danger of disappearing due to
lack of sign ups, Serena stepped up to help. We all need to do
our part with the onegs. It is not a big commitment and we all
benefit from making community here at CBSW. Don’t have
time or interest in a phone call? Email me at
[email protected] and we’ll get you signed up for an oneg
of your choosing.
David and Nathan could use some help with tenant relations.
If you have any interest, please let me know.
Next, we had the opening day of religious school. We saw
many returning students greet each other. The kids really
enjoyed connecting with their friends from last year. One of
the most special parts of religious school each week is seeing
the young children hugging and spending time with the older
kids. We are so fortunate to have such a large group of teens
spending time with our youngest members. Everyone benefits
from making our community strong.
Another important source of income for CBSW to help offset
our expenses is advertising. We have a yearly advertising
directory and some advertising in the monthly Sh’ma.
Richard Davis oversees our advertising opportunities. It’s a
great way to get your business or service announced to your
fellow congregants to help generate business for yourself. It is
also a service that your doctor, repair company or local
business might want to utilize. If you know someone that
might want to advertise please email me the information and
I’ll pass it along to Richard Davis. He volunteers his time and
energy to raise a lot of money for CBSW through these
efforts. He is also always looking for anyone who has interest
in learning about sales. He has a long history of successful
sales in his career and if you are a congregant ready to
explore how sales works, you could volunteer and learn from
Richard while building your resume and providing a service
for CBSW.
Havurat Nashim (the sisterhood of CBSW) put on what has
become the annual parent’s brunch in the social hall after
family service. I stopped by when the class that I teach,
kindergarten, was at library enjoying story time with Leslye
Feinberg. It was great to see the parents connecting with each
other. In particular I sat with many parents of our current 7th
grade as we shared tips and ideas for upcoming B’Nai
Mitzvahs.
If you’d like more information or have any comments on this
or anything else having to do with CBSW, please contact me.
L’shalom,
Ellen Karas

topic. We will announce the dates for each

to see all of you.
Tzedakah”: A special thanks to all the
students who give so generously each week.
A t t e n d a n c e a t r e l i g i o u s w o r s h i p Tzedakah is the Hebrew word for the acts that
services; Our Hebrew program begins in the we call "charity" in English: giving aid,
younger grades with the basic skills of assistance and money to the poor and needy
learning Hebrew letters and vowels. We also or to other worthy causes. In Judaism, giving
attempt to teach Hebrew phrases, sentences to the poor is not viewed as a generous,
and songs. Beginning in the 2nd grade and magnanimous act; it is simply an act of justice
continuing on our instructors are attempting to and righteousness, the performance of a duty,
teach our students the prayers that they will giving the poor their due. It is a big part of
use throughout their lives and more
Jewish life, and as Jews we must perform
acts of justice, as well as love and kindness.
