ROOTED IN THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST AND IN THE TRADITION OF CATHOLICISM AND UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF MARY IMMACULATE, WE COMMIT OURSELVES TO BE A WELCOMING COMMUNITY OF FAITH, WORSHIPPING WITH GENERATIONS OF BELIEVERS AND SERVING GOD IN ALL PEOPLE. IMMACULATE CONCEPTION Partner Parish of Sacred Heart of Jesus, Dupo, IL Seventy Times Seven Times... It’s so fitting to have our communal celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation on the Sunday on which we hear the story of the Prodigal Son—the pinnacle story of shame, forgiveness and reconciliation. If you haven’t been to reconciliation in a while it’s understandable. It can produce a mighty anxiety. We grapple over thoughts such as: will he judge me after I tell him what I’ve done? Will I be able to say the whole truth? Will I be able to say it without crying (because that would further embarrass me)? How is this thing that I’ve done even forgivable? I’d rather keep it between God and me and hope for the best. I have thoughts like that every time. Can it be that I have embellished in my own mind the reaction of the priest as he listens to my sins? Funny, when I look back on it, I have never (knowingly) shocked anyone with my confession. I have always been treated with dignity and kindness and ultimately—mercy. I had a teacher in high school who told us that we go to Reconciliation to be forgiven in the eyes of the community. While I think that answer could have some validity, it was a turn-off for me at 15. I wish I had been more open to hearing the whole story of forgiveness—the idea that the priest is present as a concrete sign of God’s love for us—not his judgement. The idea that sometimes we need other people to show us that there isn’t anything we can do that is so bad that will cause God to stop loving us. So join us for Reconciliation this Lenten season. Bring your heart full of readiness for conversion. And instead of anxiety, bring an excitement that you are about to experience the wonderful Sacrament of Reconciliation! Where God shows you, through the eyes and heart and mind of a priest, that his love, his forgiveness and his mercy are unending. “Quickly bringthefinestrobe…becausethissonofminewaslostand hasbeen ~MaryBeth Babcock, Director of Liturgy, Immaculate Conception Church found.” Luke15:2222-24 Communal Celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation TODAY March 6th 3pm at ICC. RCIA: Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: Deepen Your Experience of God Through the Catholic Faith In the Gospel of John, Jesus says, "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day." The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is for everyone who has been drawn by God to form a deeper relationship. Wherever you are in your faith practice – whether baptized in another Christian faith, starting from the very beginning, or simply interested in enriching your Catholic practice – consider the RCIA. Get to know God better and find out what it means to be Catholic. We meet in the Fr. Steve Library on Sundays, starting with "Breaking Open the Word" dismissal from 9 a.m. Mass, and catechetical sessions from 10-11:30 a.m. For more information, contact Lizanne Young at 2815105, x354, or email [email protected]. Father Carl’s Little Reservoir… How did you use your extra day this leap year? I went down to visit my mom at the nursing home in Eldorado this past Monday, and I’m happy to report that I’m still her favorite son! My sisters and I are most grateful that her spirits are good and that she’s doing better than we could have ever imagined, considering her dementia, severe arthritis, inability to feed herself or eat solid foods, and confinement to a wheelchair. We appreciate all your prayers for her. On the 2 ½ hour drive down, I couldn’t help but think of the EF 4 tornado that ripped through that area four years ago to the day, leaving six people dead in nearby Harrisburg and destroying St. Joseph Church in Ridgway. My sister Linda, who lives in Harrisburg, will never forget those early morning sirens and her retreat to the safety of her bathtub, while the tornado path missed her house by less than a half-mile. The church in Ridgway has been replaced with a beautiful new church that contains the high altar that was the only piece of furniture that survived the tornado, and on this past Monday’s anniversary my sister and her friends were going to have dinner with someone whose home was demolished in the tornado to help ease the pain of a loss that still lingers. Lent is a time of new beginnings, a time for new hope, a time to remember that the darkness will always give way to the light… and we’ve past the halfway mark. Let us continue to be grateful for all that we have, and trust God for all that we need. ~Fr. Carl Our Sympathy… To Chris Wessel and her family on the death of her cousin, Georgia (“Gigi”) Sauzek of Freeburg, who died in an automobile accident Feb. 29 at the age of 47. Daylight Savings Time... Don’t forget to turn your clocks up one hour next Sunday morning, March 13, at 2 a.m., so that you won’t be late for Mass! Blood Drive… Sunday, March 13, 8 a.m.-1p.m. in the Garden Level. In the spirit of Lent, make a sacrifice of a pint of blood to give someone else the gift of life. Parish Work Day... Our next parish work day will be on Sat., Mar. 12, from 8a.m. -12 noon. All volunteers are welcome. Golden Gatherings… Stations of the Cross March 10, at 2:30 p.m. Light Refreshments in the Gathering Space after! Cemetery CleanClean-up… The cemetery committee has scheduled a clean-up day for March 19. If you have a loved one buried in the cemetery and there is something on their grave that you would like to keep, please retrieve it before March 19, otherwise it will be disposed of during the clean-up. Thank you! Sacrament Of Reconciliation... Our communal celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation with our neighboring parishes will THIS Sunday, March 6, at 3p.m. here at Immaculate Conception. Several priests will be available for individual confession and absolution. Pope Francis encourages everyone to share in the grace of this Sacrament during this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. To keep up with Main Street Redevelopers and their plans for our former Main Street property, go to: http://mainstreetabbey.com/ 2 The Season of Lent... K of C Fish Fry Schedule… Fridays, March 11 & March 25, from 4-7 p.m. at ICS. Dine in and Carry-out available. Stations of the Cross… Friday afternoons at 2:15 in the gym at ICS and 7 p.m. Friday evenings at church. Lenten Regulations... Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on . Good Friday, and all Fridays in Lent. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is also bound to fast on Good Friday. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. The other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength may be taken according to ones needs, but altogether they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health and ability to work would be seriously affected, the obligation of the law is modified. Because Lent is a special season for all Christians, we should not lightly excuse ourselves from these penitential practices. To completely disregard the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. Popcorn Theology... In honor of the anniversary of Russell Peterson's death, his sister Kirsten Peterson and Lizanne Young will be hosting "Popcorn Theology," a monthly movie night and discussion. We're starting with one of Russ's favorites, "Babette's Feast." Meet in the Garden Level on Friday, March 18, around 7:30 p.m. (right after Stations of the Cross upstairs). We will start the evenings with an overview, show the movie, and then share dialogue afterwards. Who knows what you can learn about faith at the movies with fellow searchers? Here's the schedule through 2016, so mark your calendar: March 18: "Babette's Feast" April 22: "Life Is Beautiful" May 27: "The Scarlet and the Black" June 24: "Pray the Devil Back to Hell" July 22: "The Miracle of Marcelino" August 26: "Romero" September 23: "Frozen River" October 21: "The Keys to the Kingdom" November 25: "The Tree of Life" December 16: "It's a Wonderful Life" Prayer Shawl Ministry… If you know of someone suffering from illness, and would like a blessed prayer shawl, lovingly made by our ladies in the prayer shawl committee, delivered to them, please contact Angie at the office 281-5105. Monday Morning Meditation... Kick off your week by stopping before you start. Spend some meaningful silent time in the Fr. Steve Library every Monday morning. Gather by 7:10 a.m., participate in a brief reflection, then sit in silence from 7:15-7:35 a.m. No need to reserve a space, simply come by (use the Garden Level door by the Warming Kitchen). Mark Your Calendar... April 25, at 7 p.m., popular former local sportscaster Zip Rzeppa will speak here at Immaculate Conception on his spiritual journey from local celebrity to serving the poor and disenfranchised. 2016 Catholic Service and Ministry Appeal Begins Next Weekend... On behalf of the ministries that receive funding from The Catholic Service and Ministry Appeal and all those they serve, thank you for your prayers and for your consideration. Messenger Renewal ... The Corporal Works of Mercy are these kind acts by which we help our neighbors with their material and physical needs. feed the hungry give drink to the thirsty clothe the naked shelter the homeless visit the sick visit the imprisoned bury the dead Spiritual Works of Mercy... The Spiritual Works of Mercy are acts of compassion, as listed below, by which we help our neighbors with their emotional and spiritual needs. counsel the doubtful instruct the ignorant admonish sinners comfort the afflicted forgive offenses bear wrongs patiently pray for the living and the dead Weekly Reflection March 13, 2016 First Reading: Isaiah 43:16-21 Second Reading: Philippians 3:8-14 Gospel: John 8:1-11 Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy: It is my burning desire that, during this Jubliee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. It will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty. And let us enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God’s mercy. Jesus introduces us to these works of mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples. Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. And let us not forget the Spiritual works of mercy: To counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead. We cannot escape the Lord’s words to us and they will serve as the criteria upon which we will be judged: whether we have fed the hungry and given drink to the thirsty, welcomed the stranger and clothed the naked, or spent thime with the sick and those in prison (cf. Mt 25:31-45). Moreover, we will be asked if we have helped others to escape the doubt that causes them to fall into despair and which I soften a source of loneliness; if we have helped to overcome the ignorance in which millions of people live, especially children deprived of the necessary means to free them from the bonds of poverty; if we have been close to the lonely and afflicted; if we have forgiven those who have offended us and have rejected all forms of anger and hate that lead to violence; if we have had the kind of patience God shows, who is so patient with us; and if we have commended our brothers and sisters to the Lord in prayer. In each of these “little ones” Christ himself is present. His flesh becomes visible in the flesh of the tortured, the crushed the scourged, the malnourished, and the exiled...to be acknowledged, touched and cared for by us. Let us not forget the words of Saint John of the Cross: “as we prepare to leave this life, we will be judged on the basis of love.” ~#15 From the Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy Community Events… Rummage Sale...
