PARENT PACKET Sail into Summer with Math! For Students Completing Second Grade This summer math booklet was developed to provide students in kindergarten through the eighth grade an opportunity to review grade level math objectives and to improve math performance. Summer Mathematics Packet Grade 2 Mathematics Packet Answer Key Week 1/Basic Facts 1. Check that your child has written the numbers as first, second, third, fourth, etc. 2. Check that the whole numbers are written from 1 to 100. 3. The answers are: 4 and 5, 14 and 15, 18 and 19, 10 and 11, 8 and 9, 16 and 17. 4. Check that the pictograph has a title, each axis is labeled, the vertical scale starts at zero and there are the correct number of pictures for each flavor. Also check that the pictograph has a key (Such as = 2 ice cream cones). Check that the three sentences each describe something about the pictograph (like more people like chocolate than strawberry, etc.). 5. The triangle has three lines of symmetry (vertical and two slanted lines), the scale has one vertical line of symmetry, the magnifying glass has one slanted line of symmetry, the parallelogram has no lines of symmetry, and the pentagon has five lines of symmetry (one from each vertex that extends across to the midpoint of the opposite side). Week 2/Addition and Subtraction with and without Regrouping 1. The answers are – 35, 74, 89, 111, 62, and 111. 2. The answers are – 75, 88, 133, 122, 101, and 115. 3. The answers are – 33, 37, 22, 6, 17, and 21. 4. The answers are – 51, 55, 36, 49, 29, and 49. 5. The answers are – 127, 412, 478, 875, 85, and 372. Week 3/Money Sense 1. The coins are quarter, nickel, penny, dime, and half dollar. 2. Possible answers: 25¢: 1 quarter – 2 dimes and 1 nickel – 2 dimes and 5 pennies – 25 pennies 50¢: 2 quarters – 5 dimes – 10 nickels – 1 quarter and 25 pennies 3. You will get back 58 cents. Possible combinations: 2 quarters, 1 nickel, and 3 pennies – 5 dimes, 1 nickel, 3 pennies 4. Possible answers: Soccer ball and Rocket – Change = 35¢ Magnifying glass and key – Change = $2.07 5. Check that the total is correct and ask your child if they included drinks. Week 4/Fractions 1. One whole is larger than one-half. One-third is larger than one-fourth. One-half is larger than one-third. One-half is larger than one-fourth. 2. Each girl should receive 4 slices of pizza. 2 1 3. For , 2 of the three sections should be colored. You should have 2 pieces when cut in half and 4 pieces when cut in half again. 5. Check to see that your child has listed 6 things that involve fractions. Grade 2 Answer Key Page 1 Summer Mathematics Packet Week 5/Time 1. The first clock is 5:00, the second clock is 2:30, and the third clock is 7:15. 2. Check to see that the clock is accurate. 3. Check to see that your child has listed 5 things that tell time, such as hourglass, clock, watch, sundial, pendulum, church bells, bells on a ship, etc. 4. Check to see that your child completed the list at the highest level of detail. 5. Kathy and her two friends spent 3 hours 30 minutes at the pool. Week 6/Multiplication and Division 1. Check the poster and see if it encourages people to save money. 4. Have your child sing their song. 5. Practice the multiplication facts with your child using the flash cards. 6. Check your child’s drawing and ask them to name the shapes and/or symbols. Week 8/Problem Solving 1. Check to see if the list includes 5 different flavors of drinks. 2. Check the list of prices to be sure that the most expensive is 50 cents. 3. Check the poster to see that each drink is listed and cost in included. 4. Check the values of cost and change. 5.
