unnatural light
As twilight sets on, the fluorescents compensate for and replace the diminishing natural sunshine. They brighten
towards the 'peak' activity of the building – around 9 PM – when all bulbs glow with full force. Then the sunlight bulbs
start to dim, leaving only the yellowish glow of the 'moonlight' bulbs over the course of the night.

The old hyphen entrance to the building was a popular and comfortable place for students to interact outdoors, in all
types of weather due to the presence of the small shading canopy two stories above. The current design removes this
amenity, making no accommodation for outdoor life at the school. We propose to build a shading canopy in the front of
the school that doubles as a lighting installation, playing off of the ‘natural’ lighting conditions that the new hyphen
façade attempts to filter. The canopy has a dual nature: during the day, the device shades, while at night, it replaces
natural light.
