GUIDELINES
The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute
(ICPI) was founded by the manufacturers of concrete
pavingstones to promote use and proper installation
of pavers. The ICPI has established industry
standards through a certification program and
other continuing education courses, in an effort to
preserve these fundamental installation practices.

step 1 : D
etermine Amount of Materials: Determine the area
(length x width) and select the type of paver you are going
to use. Measure length of “open” edges, i.e., areas not
against a house, curb or another rigid pavement, as this
will be the linear feet of edging needed. See a Clayton
representative with your measurements to calculate
bedding sand and base.
step 2 : E
xcavate the Area: Before digging, call the local utility
company and have them mark out underground utilities.
The minimum excavation depth on patios and walks is
7 inches: 4 inch base, 1 inch sand and 2 3/8 inch paver.
Driveways or heavily trafficked areas should be significantly
deeper, and in either case, base should slope away from
the house at 1/8 inch per foot.

step 3 : I nstall the Geotextile and Base: Cover the compacted,
sloped sub-base with geotextile and turn it up along
the sides of the excavation. Place the first two inches of
aggregate base on top and rake out evenly. Material should
be moist, but not soaked, for proper compaction. Continue
adding and compacting the base in layers, making sure to
leave enough room for the bedding sand and pavers. It is
important to maintain the slope away from the house on
the subsequent layers of base material.
step 4: I nstall the Edge Restraints: Lay edging out around the
perimeter and stake in according to manufacturer.
step 5: I nstall the Bedding Sand: Place 1 inch pipes several feet
apart and parallel to each other. “Screed” or smooth sand
between pipes by pulling straight piece of lumber along the
pipes. Add any additional sand needed for low spots, and
screed as needed until sand is smooth. Repeat on entire
area, filling indentations from the pipes with sand.
step 6: Place the Concrete Pavers: Start border course at a
corner, and make cuts as needed. When finished, run
plate compactor over area, replacing any that crack or
chip. Put dry joint sand on top of pavers, and run
compactor over area again.
TO AVOID SCRATCHING paver surfaces, Clayton recommends the use of
a protective layer between the pavers and plate compactor at time of final
compaction. Application recommended is use of a mat, thin plywood, carpet
or soil separation fabric. Clayton recommends the use of separators with
ALL paver products.

Questions
Garden S tate P avers Warranty
The components include a base, bedding sand, concrete pavers with sand in their joints
and an edge restraint to contain the pavers at the perimeter.
All Clayton Block Co., Inc. Garden State Pavers are guaranteed to be manufactured using
the finest quality raw materials available and manufactured under strict guidelines.
Interlock is the inability of a paver to move independently of its surroundings. It is the
interlocking of the pavers that causes loads to be spread over a wider area of pavers than
where the load is applied. It is the key to the strength of the pavement system.
W hat i s the base material composed of ?
The base is made of compacted, crushed stone or crushed concrete that varies in size from
one inch down to dust, which has been compacted in four-inch lifts. Concrete sand is
placed on top of the compacted base as the bedding for the pavers. Limestone screenings
or stone dust cannot be used as a base or bedding as they have too many fine particles that
slow the drainage and rut under repeated loads from tires. The use of screenings or stone
dust will void the warranty on the pavers.
Is geotex t i le necessar y ? Can I subst itute filter fabric in its place ?
No, geotextile is not always necessary. Geotextile is recommended over silt, clay and other
poorly draining soils to avoid integration and contamination of the compacted aggregate
base. It is not necessary with coarse, sandy soils. Filter fabric should not be used in place
of the geotextile, as it can have a lower tensile strength.
W i ll free zi ng and thawing damage the pavers?
No, the paver joints allow for movement without cracking in freeze and thaw cycles.
C an pavers be lai d over an existing concrete walkway or pat io?
Yes, provided that the concrete base is structurally stable. It is important to note that the
final grade of the walkway or patio will be approximately three inches above the existing
concrete, as the use of bedding sand is still required.
C an I replace m y pavers if they become ch ipped , damaged or stained?
Yes, a paver can be pried out easily with a paver extractor or two flat head screwdrivers.
I C P I recommends an 1 1% overage on paver projects. Is that overaGE
alwa y s necessar y ?
No, it is a guideline. ASTM manufacturing standards allow for 5 percent defects in the
manufacturing and shipping of concrete pavers. In addition, the overage can be tailored
based on the design of the project. Dramatic radii, curves and corners will generally
require additional pieces for cuts compared to jobs with simpler design layouts. The
property owner should keep unused pavers. This ensures that any damaged or stained
pavers can be replaced with a color match in the future.

Warranty
Clayton Block Co., Inc. and all Clayton Company affiliates warrant to the original
purchaser that should a Clayton Garden State Paver, installed in accordance with our
installation guidelines, prove structurally defective, it will be replaced without cost.
Replacement labor and/or shipping are not included. Efflorescence, a normal occurrence
with all concrete masonry materials, which will wash or wear off over the course of time,
is not to be deemed a reason for replacement, and Clayton Block Co., Inc. accepts no
responsibility or liability for it.
If a Garden State Paver is shown to be structurally defective, Clayton Block Co., Inc. and
all Clayton Company affiliates cannot guarantee the color match of the replacement unit.
In order to make a claim, the original purchaser (homeowner or dealer/installer) must
make said claim to Clayton Block Co., Inc. with proof of purchase.
All warranties regarding Garden State Pavers by Clayton Block Co., Inc., written or
implied, are null and void should limestone screenings, stone dust, or masonry sand be
utilized in the setting bed or pavement base in any application of Garden State Pavers.
Industry standards recommend the use of concrete sand in accordance with ASTM C 33
for pavingstone bedding (ICPI Tech Specs 2, 4, 9, 12, 14). Garden State Pavers conform
to ASTM C 936, Standard Specification For Solid Concrete Interlocking Paving Units.
COL OR
Garden State Pavers are manufactured from natural materials and as such, variations in
shade or color can be expected. For actual product color, please obtain a sample of the
product you have selected.
Over time, external factors may cause discoloration of the surface of the paver. Common
factors include decaying organic matter and use of well water, sprinkler systems, stone dust
and fertilizers. Discuss cleaning options with a Clayton Block Co., Inc. representative.
Efflorescence
Efflorescence is a white salt deposit that sporadically appears on any concrete surface and
normally disappears over time. This natural occurrence, due to the hydration of cement,
produces calcium hydroxide on the surface of the paver but does not affect the structural
integrity of the pavers and does not qualify as a defect.
A LLIA NCE
SUPERSAND BOND, Polymeric Sand for Paver Joints
A mixture of polymer binders and calibrated sand, the installation is nearly identical to regular paver joint
sand, except for the application of water. Once set, it becomes very firm and locks between paver joints,
maintaining pavers securely in place and equally effective on both horizontal and sloped surfaces. Available
in beige and slate gray.
GATOR SEAL
Available in Natural Look Finish, Wet Look Finish, Satin Look Finish and Gator Seal Resealer, these
products penetrate deep into our Garden State Pavers, reducing oil and dirt penetration, and protecting
them from the corrosion of de-icing salts.
GATOR EDGE

Use these coursing charts as a guide to assist in the layout of your
wall. You can expand the designs lengthwise. Be sure to create
a pattern without long vertical and horizontal lines so that your
wall will be more aesthetically appealing, and it will add strength
during installation. Close attention must be paid to both sides
of the wall during installation, as long lines may appear on one
side and not the other due to the angle of the units. Note that the
units are sold in pairs. The Oasis Collection is recommended for
walls up to 3 feet high.
