April 2017

The Fundraising Committee
surely knows how to put the
“fun” in FUNdraising. They were
busy preparing for the Pot o’
Gold Fun Casino on March 18
to ensure all the cards and
chips were ready to go. This
month we will showcase their
talents at our annual Spring
Rummage Sale.

SEESA and the Holyrood Community
League are working together on a
neighbourhood bench project. Harvey and his
team of talented woodcrafters have built 20
benches. Now we need volunteer Bench
Hosts—this is only for people
who live in the Holyrood
Community. The hope is to
spread to other areas in
Edmonton in the future. The
bench must sit on the
boulevard between the
sidewalk and the street.
These benches will provide a resting place for
those who need to rest while out for a walk. If
you are interested please email:
[email protected]
Rummage Sale is also around the
corner. It is such an exciting time for SEESA.
Thanks to the dedication of our members we
are again permitted to use the word “Rummage”
on the big street signs that we rent. Thanks to
everyone for calling the councilors office and
311!
I am working on several committees (as
usual). A new one is for the SEESA Canada
150 celebration. This will be an all day event
and feature our own SEESA talent. Circle the
23rd of June on your calendar—you do not want
to miss this!
You are never too old to set another goal or to
dream a new dream….

CENTS-ABLE
At the SEESA AGM last year
we challenged every SEESA Member to
set aside 25¢ a day starting April 1st,
2016. The challenge officially ends
March 31, 2017.
Did you take up the challenge?
Drop off your donation at the Front Desk
The donated money is going to
Under the New Roof fund and
is being set aside for the
replacement of existing equipment as
needed. Thank you to all Quarter-a-Day
Cents-Able donators.
April 2017 Volunteer Voice
Thank you book lovers…
for answering our cry for help
by joining the Library
Committee in time for the
busy Book Sale preparation!
Will You Miss It When It’s
Gone?
Without an Entertainment
Liaison, Monthly Dinner
entertainment will be a thing
of the past. We need a
volunteer to greet and attend
to the entertainers (who have
already been booked for this
year) and for someone to
start to book entertainers for
2018. Angela is happy to help
you learn the ropes.
Painters and Planters
We need someone to paint
our planters when weather
permits. Can you help?
Front Desk Receptionist
We have a few candidates in
training! Please be patient as
they learn a very challenging
position.
As Soon As Possible After
the Rummage Sale...
We’d like to get the Volunteer
vests laundered, folded, and
put back in storage. It takes a
few hours, but it’s not a
difficult job… come as a pair
or a group and have a good
old natter between loads.
Keeping The Name But
Changing The Label
The end of April will see a
change in designation on my
name tag from Coordinator of
Volunteers to Volunteer.
I’ve loved every second of
my job and I love this place
— the staff, the volunteers,
and the members, so I’ll
vacate the desk, but I’m not
leaving home!!

Happy Spring Everyone!
Our Spring Programming begins on April 3 and
will run until the end of June 2017. Our
registration day and beyond have been very
busy with registrations which means all the
classes are filling up nicely. Be sure to check
out the programs we’ve either brought back or
are new: The Writer Within You, Small
Ensemble Workshop, Ukelele For All Levels,
Hula for Health, Karate/Self Defense, and
Urban Poling .
We are also offering Massage Therapy—please
call Amanda directly to book your appointment.
She is busy so her time here has expanded to
Mondays and Tuesdays.
There has been much discussion about our
Drop In option and why SEESA has stopped
offering this except for the first class. One of
the reasons for this is it became too difficult to
monitor. Some people were attending classes
and not paying the drop in. I am looking into
different ways to be able to offer this back to
our members. I do have some suggestions from
our members and the instructors so now I just
need the time to work through it and make sure
it can be implemented. One suggestion is to
have a member of the class volunteer to be the
attendance taker and ensure those who are
dropping in have paid at the front desk. If you
would like to discuss this further with me
please let me know. I can give you the facts to
share.

Military Whist Tournament
February 25, 2017
SEESA is proud to host our 11th annual
Edmonton Poetry Festival Event
I was very pleased, happy, and awed at the
turn out. There were 27 tables (108 players
and 3 volunteers). The players came from
as far away as Ryley, Spruce Grove and
Sherwood Park.
An Evening of Works from
Well Aged Poets
We started the day with coffee and muffins,
sold the first batch of 50/50 tickets, and read
the rules before playing the first half of the
games. We had a lovely lunch (ham and
scalloped potatoes). Some of the door
prizes were given out and the first 50/50
draw was made ($152) before we started
the rest of the games. We finished playing
about 2:45 pm. More door prizes were given
out plus the second 50/50 prize ($106).
The two teams with the lowest number of
flags (3) pulled a card as the tie breaker.
The booby prize went to: Doris Miller,
Lorraine German, Jeanette Mitchell, and
Beverley Bucknier from Sherwood Park
Third Place: Carol Kerekanich, Marie
Westmancoat, Kay Walker, and Ruth
Bekker from Ryley
Second Place: Lorraine McCartney, Ray
McCartney, Gloria Hagen, and Ron Hagen
from Sherwood Park
First Place: John Frank, Linda Frank, Joyce
Haley, and Liz Tarkowski from Calder
I would like to thank Ann Hartwig and her
son, Kevin Hartwig, and Caroline Anker
for helping tear down all the tables and
chairs after the Tournament was over.
Our next Tournament is on September 30,
2017 at SEESA. Hope to see you all there.

Rummage Sale Cleaning and Sorting
NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY
March 27-April 20 from 9am—noon
Drop in to Herb Johnson Workshop
1/2 hour or a couple hours, if
you have it to spare,
pop in. It all helps.
Many hands make less work.
Since Christmas break the
Melody Singers have been
rehearsing for our spring sing-out schedule.
Included in this time is the preparation for
our spring concert which will feature the
music of Canada as our tribute to our
country’s 150th birthday. Anne Marshall
has, as always, chosen a program that we
are excited about and is hard at work
Friday, April 21 Rummage Sale Set Up preparing us to participate in this celebration.
The purpose of our sing-outs is to bring
9-10am Tables Up—Volunteers to be enjoyment to our listeners. We began this
season with a visit to Kiwanis Place. Marilyn
assigned
Sandhal was our emcee. Our breaks
10am-1pm—Box Moving
featured Martin Molzan on violin playing
“Traumerei” and “ It’s Been a Long, Long
10am-1pm—Box Unpacking
Time”. He was accompanied by Anne

almost all of our singers (no rest for the
talented!). Dale Wilkie and Colleen Ryan
sang “Hello, Dolly”. Dale also read two
poems “Ghost Sniffers of My Mind” and “
The God of Teapots”.
Volunteers Needed
Our next visit was to Jubilee Lodge where
Gill McGovern chaired the program. Alida
and Johan Van Braeden sang two duets
“All The Way” and “The Gypsy Rover”. Ben
Lauber sang “Beautiful Dreamer” and Pearl
Lauber read “ Love You Forever” with Ben
singing the refrain.

Emmanuel Home, a new venue for us,
hosted our next sing-out. Alida Van
Braeden was our emcee. Lorraine Kalis
and Walter Lechelt sang “Silver Threads
Among the Gold” and “I’ll Fly Away”. Elsie
Combs and Ben Lauber recited the
harrowing tale “The Cremation of Sam
McGee”.
Our senior audiences are wonderful adding
to our enjoyment of singing together.

Why are people always tired in April?
Because they've just finished a 31 day March.
