A Word from Tanya
Dear Families,
Exciting times continue as we lead up to the end of a very short term! I am delighted with the way the year has
commenced and the happy faces I see engaged in the wonderful range of learning experiences.
As always I am grateful for the way the community comes together for a common purpose. This was clearly
evident on Saturday at the working bee. So many people and so many new faces! On Monday morning I was
amazed by how beautiful the school looked. I took my cup of tea and wandered around enjoying looking at the
results of the hard work by all. What a difference!
I do apologize I was unable to attend due to a prior family commitment. Hard work ending in a barbecue was
obviously enjoyed by all from the feedback received. It was also a better time slot for many. Thank you to all the
children who loved having time playing together.
A big THANK YOU to Rowan for organising the day and to Yoko for organising the refreshments!
We are very GRATEFUL to the following people as well as their children:

Visitors to School
This week Year 5 and 6 have had Jason Wood (Tuesday) and Minister Merlino ( tomorrow) talking to them
about government and how it works. This is so they have an understanding leading to an election year.
Year Level Events
Foundation are working on their Inquiry Unit of Healthy Eating this week. They had a visit to Emerald
Woolworths which was exciting and selected, purchased and paid for fresh fruit to make fruit kebabs with their
families on Thursday during their Celebration of Learning. They also had a lovely time at Emerald Lake.
Year 1/2 are off to the Aquarium today as a follow up for their inquiry focus on water. This is always a
favourite place to visit.
Year 3/4 Celebration of Learning occurs tonight at 6.15 where children share their learning about famous
people that have changed our world.
Christy and Matt
Yesterday Christy and Matt visited the preschool to observe and share teacher practice with Sara, our four year
old educator. This ensures we are aware and aligning our strategies to provide the very best transition for our
students. Sara will also visit Christy and Matt to do likewise. This will occur several times over the year.
School Council 2016
Wow! What a response! At the close of nominations we have filled all permanent parent members of council
and have five co- opted community members as well.
This is an amazing reflection of the desire to be involved in and assist in the forward direction of our school.
Our School Council members for 2016 are:
Parents- Kelly Verwey, Richard Green, Nicole Cashmore, Rowan Coxhead, Alex Gartrell, Tim Palmer, Kirsten
Leah, Katya McCubbing, Emma Blamey, Lauren Gibbins
Parent Community Members- Florence Lindhaus, Elaine Cunico, Jenny Cataldo, Michelle Joy, Louise Walder
Staff Representatives- Justin Benne, Justine Kolliou, Hedda Dooley, Anne Matheson and Tanya Cooke
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Matt Cody, Christy Talty and Liz Tatton, all of whom will be
leaving council this year, for the wonderful, talented input they have provided. We appreciate your dedication to
our students.
Our School Council AGM will be held at 7pm in the Year 6 room on Tuesday March 15th followed by our first
new 2016 school council meeting.
School Picnic- Friday March 18th 5.00 pm to 7.30 pm
This promises to be a wonderful way to come together as a community. Notes have been sent home in respect
to ordering food so please return these as soon as possible for catering purposes. Come and join the fun!
Foundation 2016 Family Forum- Thursday March 17th - 7 pm
All Foundation families are welcome to come along and provide feedback and ask questions now that school
has commenced. We held this last year and all families attended and welcomed the chance to share ideas,
provide feedback and ask further questions now that they were in the school routine. Staff and school
councillors will attend to share in the evening.
Foundation Days at School
Following the Labour Day weekend( this weekend) Foundation students will attend school on a Wednesday
from now on.
Assembly
This week 6J will be performing as well as Year 7 Emerald Secondary students speaking.
Families and friends are all welcome.
Reminder to Families:
Term One concludes on Thursday March 24th at 2.30 pm. This is due to the following day being Good Friday
and the commencement of Easter. OSHC will be available from this earlier time.
Crossing the Road
We are still noticing families crossing the road at the oval end of the school when the school crossing is in
operation. PLEASE do not continue this dangerous practice.
Thank you to the majority of families who have listened to Phillip's request. We are even noticing families
dropping children off on the other side of the road so they can have the experience of using the crossing.
Take care,
Tanya

C is for consistency.
As we get into the school term I am exploring what consistency means in the child’s life.
These are that rules and expectations are the same from one time to another. Consistency
makes the child’s world predictable and less confusing. It frees their minds of worry
about what might happen and teaches them accountability for their actions.
Consistency gives a child a sense of security. They learn they can rely on their parents and
trust that their needs will be met. This helps in the bonding process. Children with consistent parents
experience less anxiety. Developing a daily routine with regular rising times, bedtimes, after school schedules,
and meal times will cultivate a more peaceful home life. Consistency helps a child develop a sense of
responsibility because they know what their parents expect from them. .Children who have consistent rules
with predictable consequences are less likely to “push the limits” and constantly test their parents by
misbehaving. They learn quickly that “no” means “no”. Investing early in consistent parenting pays off huge
dividends later. There will be considerably less temper tantrums, arguing and bargaining as the children grow.
Without consistency children must “guess” daily what actions are appropriate. They wonder if everything that
takes place happens because he or she did something to make it happen. Inconsistent parenting causes
confusion, poor self esteem and oftentimes very negative values.
How can I be a more consistent parent?
Consider carefully what values are important to you and your family and make your rules accordingly.
Setting up too many rules for young children will overwhelm both you and them. Pick three or four to
start with and increase them as your child matures.
Make certain the rules and consequences you set in place are ones you are prepared to enforce.
Life is hectic and some days it seems easier to just let some things slide. However, by doing this you are
giving your child an incentive to push boundaries and test your limits.
Both parents will not always agree upon every rule and consequence. Talk these issues over privately and
strive towards a workable compromise.
Remember to be consistent with your praise of positive behaviors. This teaches your child what pleases
you and reinforces appropriate conduct.
Some parents find that developing reward charts using stickers or stars help them to remain on track. If
this doesn’t work for your family try something else such as posting a list of rules and consequences
where they can be easily seen.
Each child has a unique temperament. Adjust your approach to fit the child. Some children are easily
guided while another may be somewhat stubborn and persistent.

For making a genuine effort to help turn someones day around at sports day yesterday.
We had a great turn-out on Saturday afternoon, with 39 adults and just as many kids turning
up and pitching in for the first working bee of the year. The mild weather brought out a
fantastic mix of first timers and familiar faces. Lots of essential jobs got done to keep the
school neat and tidy, and best of all was the chance to mingle and enjoy an afternoon tea and
a BBQ dinner to finish. Hope to see you next time! Thanks to all the helpers and bakers,
there were so many (sorry if I’ve left your name off):
