An Overview of the County Bee Here’s something funny--the pronouncer had no idea which microphone to use! There were 26 people in the county bee. To think that Daniel got 9th is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In the News March 2017 Renewable Energy Dictionary definition: Who is Daniel Green? You might be saying, who in the world is Daniel Green? Why is he special? Daniel is the speller from Ms Cleveland’s 4th grade class who won the school spelling bee and the district bee. He is AMAZING!!!! Another favorite is his best friend, Andrew Schober, who got 3rd place in the school bee and 2nd place in the district bee. Daniel and Andrew fought for the title of District 65’s top speller in the bee. Daniel won and moved on to the county bee. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! • is important because using petroleum makes global warming.” What is the Spelling Bee? A spelling bee is a competition in which contestants are asked to spell a broad selection of words, usually with a varying degree of difficulty. The Cycle of the Spelling Bee The spelling bee is made up of levels that go from your classroom bee to the national bee. A certain amount of spellers move on to the the next bee. As I said, it starts in your classroom. The top 5 spellers from the unofficial classroom bee move on to the vocabulary preliminary test, which is the only part other than the permission slip that is a paper-and-pencil . If you pass the test, you move on to your school bee. The top 10-12 spellers from that bee move on to the district bee. Next, the top speller from that bee moves on to the part-county bee. For our location, that is the North Cook County bee. After that, the top 3 move on to the regional bee. The top speller from that bee moves on to the national bee, in Washington D.C, where hundreds of kids from all over the country compete. They both got very high places in the school bee, the district bee, and the county bee. Let me introduce them. Andrew Schober We’ve told you about him, you’ve wondered about him. It’s time to meet the real Andrew Schober, 4th grade wonder (my twin brother)... Here are some things he said: “It was really exciting to compete against Daniel. Especially when he won.” “I like math and science, but I really like spelling.” “If I won the national, I would give some of the money to my family, and the feeling would be awesome.” “My favorite word is supererogation.” Daniel Green We’ve told you about him, you’ve wondered about him. It’s time to meet the real Daniel Green, 4th grade wonder… Here are some things he said: “If I liked anything more than spelling it would be swimming. I swim at the YWCA.” “My two favorite foods are mac and cheese and steak but not together.” “If I could go anywhere I would go to Arizona.” “ If I won the National, I would donate a lot of money to Dewey, my family, and charities like St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.” “I don’t know what my favorite word is, but my least favorite word is philately” Details for the Spelling Bee Just so you know, the bee is usually for 3rd-8th graders (although there was a 2nd grader in the County Bee, but he’s from a gifted school). If you are in K-2, and you are interested, you can keep practicing, for there might be a bee in your future! (Just so you know, there is no spelling bee at Nichols, but there is one at Haven.) Wrapping Up We need to wrap up, so let’s sum up the facts: •A spelling bee is a competition in which contestants compete by spelling words •The cycle goes from your willingness to do it to Washington D.C. •Daniel Green is AWESOME!!! •Andrew Schober is AWESOME!!! •The pronouncer at the County Bee was hilarious!!! •Andrew is my twin •Daniel is his best friend •The bee is for 3-8 graders In this article I will be telling you about all the renewable energy types. It’s important because using petroleum makes global warming. Enjoy! Tesla is developing solar roof tiles because when people go and buy solar panels they end with big bulky boxes on their roof and they probably don’t like it. Tesla has tackled this problem. They’re making roof shingles that are small solar panels. Plus they look like regular roof tiles. The Nuclear Option Terrapower is a new company is run by one of Bill Gates’s partners and now Bill Gates is investing the Terrapower nuclear reactor. This reactor is unlike any other nuclear reactor; it runs on depleted uranium. Depleted uranium is the waste that nuclear energy plants leave behind. There are a lot of tanks of it in America but this reactor runs on it. The uranium rods only need to be replaced every 10 years; they will be using regular nuclear power plants waste. Yeah good solution, huh! Geothermal You see that picture below? You see that smoke? That’s not smoke; it’s steam. How geothermal works is that it uses the heat underground. That heat is about 55 degrees Fahrenheit all year round. They use that heat to power the generator. And that’s about it! Who knows, maybe you’ll be the next National champion!!! You can if you work hard and never give up like Barack Obama. If you do that, you might be President some day. Barack Obama inspired people that you can accomplish anything if you work hard. Barack Obama was born in 1961 in Hawaii. His mother was from Kansas and his father was from Kenya. His mother wanted to stay in Hawaii, but his father wanted to go back to Kenya so they split up. Barack Obama lived with his grandparents in Hawaii so he could get an education. After eight years of not seeing him, his father came to visit for one month. I’m going to tell you a little about them. Richard Hammond is a British presenter for an old TV show called Top Gear. On September 20th, 2006, he tried to beat the Land Speed record. The British land speed record is the fastest land speed achieved by a vehicle in the United Kingdom, as opposed to one on water or in the air. Everything was going so smoothly until he had a CRASH!!!!!!!! Here is his story... When Richard Hammond was age 36 he tried to take down the land speed record. He had to go over 300.3 mph in a car to break the record. That record was set by Colin Fallows on July 6th 2006. They both (Colin Fallows and Richard Hammond) were driving a car called The Vampire, which is capable of going 370 mph because it is jet-propelled...meaning it has jet engines!! Richard Hammond was going 280 mph, but a nail in the tire caused the tire to blow up and that caused car to tip over!!! Tom Brady In 16 NFL seasons, Tom Brady (QB for the Patriots) threw 456 touchdowns and 152 interceptions. Dak Prescott In 1 NFL season, Dak Prescott (QB for the Cowboys) has thrown 23 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Aaron Rodgers In 12 seasons, Aaron Rodgers (QB for the Packers) threw 297 touchdowns and 72 interceptions. Ben Roethlisberger In 13 NFL seasons, Ben Roethlisberger (QB for the Steelers) has 301 touchdowns and 160 interceptions. Jay Cutler In 11 NFL seasons, Jay Cutler (QB for the Bears) has thrown for a total of 205 career touchdown and 146 interceptions. Derek Carr In 3 NFL seasons, Derek Carr (QB for the Raiders) has thrown 81 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. dinner. He ordered his favorite, “Cottage pie” and when it arrived he said “how did you know Cottage Pie is my favorite?”... he’d forgotten he had ordered it from the menu! Amazingly, he recovered without any major issues!!! You maybe wondering how he survived. Well it was just a big miracle. In truth, he probably should be dead based on how bad the crash was. The car was smashed to pieces so it’s amazing he was in one piece. Overall he is very lucky to be alive right now, after his horrible crash and his comas and brain problems. As you watch him now on TV you couldn’t even tell he had a very terrible crash. I think he’ll leave the record breaking to the professional car drivers from now on and maybe 300 MPH is out of his reach! Ambulances rushed to the scene of the crash and with sirens blaring, they rushed Hammond to Leeds General Infirmary Unit. You’re probably wondering, did he survive? Well he was in a coma that lasted a long time. He had some illnesses, and many brain problems. He lost his memory, so couldn’t remember from one minute to the next. One funny story from hospital…..He was given a menu to order Richard Hammond I hope you learned something about these great NFL quarterbacks!!! science & technology Pokémon By Caleb Contreras I am sure you know what Pokémon is. In case you don’t know, Pokémon is a Popular anime and video game. It has 9 TV shows and 7 generations of videogames. (And a god.) So here’s the Pokémon timeline of Pokémon. The 1990s is where it all began with Pokémon... The first games, Pokémon Red, Blue, and Green, were a success in Japan and America. These first games spawned tons of theories like Piikablu and Mew under a truck. The next game was Pokémon Yellow and the anime. The anime starred the one and only Ash Ketchum!!!!!!! Pokémon Yellow is based off the anime. A lot of people were angry when playing this game, mostly because their Pikachu wouldn’t evolve. Next came Gen 2. This included Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal. They also made an anime for this new generation of Pokémon. Next is Gen 3. Once again, new anime, new games. The new games were Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Firered page 4 • march 2017 Virtual Reality By Julian Pamaran and Leafgreen. Next is Gen 4, with Pokémon games Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Heartgold and Soulsilver. Also, new anime. Next is Gen 5, when Pokémon Black and White came out, and new anime as well. Now we are going to present day. Let’s start with Pokémon Black and White 2. Same game as the original Black and White, but the evil organization, Team Plasma, was more organized. Next is the Pokémon Revolution (just because the games are in 3d)! This started with Pokémon X and Y (my first Pokémon game). And once again, new anime. Now to the most recent game, Pokémon Sun and Moon. This new game has so many new Pokémon, and I enjoyed the two weeks and one day I played it! So that’s the timeline of Pokémon games. And don’t hate this article. Do you want to turn your surroundings into a spaceship, deep space, or an ocean? Well, virtual reality is the answer. It is super awesome and very high tech. You just put the goggles on and you are in a space station and a spaceship. And, you can connect to a computer and whatever is on the computer will be seen in the headset. The headset above is a Playstation 4 VR. You have to connect it to a Playstation 4, and it will have the game on the screen. It’s super high tech and AWESOME!! Did you know that VR was invented in 1965? science & technology Video Game Comparison Pokémon! And cool features, like Netflix. Somil’s favorite is the PS4. So, we hope you read this article! Uh oh...Pokémon, the global phenomenon. You’re probably thinking, not that again! But, there’s more than you think! Pokémon is one popular game! It’s a game where you go around catching beasts to battle. So far, I’ve gotten to the elite 4 in Pokémon Sun and beaten Kahuna Hala. Yep. Hala.. he was easy. I’ve also almost beat the elite four but Khalili blasted me. As I was saying… Pokémon is a popular franchise that has many people play. Some of the games are Red, Blue, Gold, Silver, Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond, Pearl ,Black, White, Black 2, White 2, X, Y, Sun, Moon, and LOTS of apps and remakes such as Pokémon duel. Pokémon duel is an awesome Pokémon trading figure game (tfg) where you buy Pokémon figures and battle AI and real players. I am pretty good but not a master… except I got a rare Pikachu. Exoplanets: Revival to the Destruction of Earth By Robert Razdolsky Some of you may know that, recently, NASA discovered seven Earth-sized planets, some of which might contain water. They are called Exoplanets. This article is about the Exoplanets. Exoplanets are planets that orbit stars outside of the solar system. The solar system contains fifteen bodies: the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, the asteroid belt, and the dwarf planets (Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, Eris, and Ceres). There might be other planets in other galaxies that contain water, an ozone layer, a strong atmosphere, and maybe even plants and extra-terrestrials. A planet in the galaxy Alpha Centauri might contain water, as in Avatar, (rated PG-13, 2009), a movie in which the military occupies a planet called Pandora, which contains huge amounts of plants and animals, all of them blue. It is set in the Alpha Centauri galaxy. Here is the history: Roblox also loves Pokémon too! Since Pokémon go! came out, Roblox has added levels such as Roblox Pokémon go, and Pokémon Go Tycoon. Pokémon was created by a man named Satoshi Tajiri in 1995. He loved collecting and he wanted to share that with everyone! He did, and Pokémon was created! Then, Pokémon cards came. They are like the games, but basically just battling, and you use all of your cards, not just six Pokémon. Also, we have the anime. That’s about a boy named Ash Ketchum, who goes on an adventure. Pokémon is awesome. There is over 20 games that are all strange, and there are games where you are a person, and sometimes you are a Pokémon. Sometimes you take care of Pokémon. You are strange, Gamefreak. You should be called Gamefreaks. There are 801 Pokémon to catch so, let’s catch them all! There are many events, so try to catch them all. Get Pokémon!!!!!! In 2011, scientists discovered an exoplanet called Kepler-22b. It is far away from Earth, but orbits a bright star. It has oceans and possibly plants. It is larger than Earth. It could be a possible refuge if Earth is destroyed. We know the Earth’s future won’t be like 2001: A Space Odyssey (rated G, 1968), a movie in which the Earth is unpolluted and people casually go to Jupiter. Even though the star near 22b isn’t as bright as the Sun, it still is bright enough. 22b’s large size will also help house the growing population. The Earth’s ozone layer will eventually break, causing a greenhouse effect. In other words, the ozone layer breaks, the ultraviolet light rays emitted from that sun will penetrate more, causing environmental catastrophes. However, we could make a shield to protect us, and 22b is also 587 light-years away. Still, technology could get us there. Life might be there, a likely chance of land and water, 72 degrees Fahrenheit, 79% Earth similarity, and hugeness. Well, now you know about video games. Well, almost everything. They are all good gaming systems, but it really depends on the type of video games you like. So, see you later folks! Even if 22b doesn’t in reality make for colonization, there will still be other planets. The human race can go on, even without Earth -- whether in space, or on another planet. Mars is another possible solution. It only takes six months to get to Mars, and colonization is expected to start in the 2030’s. It has frozen water underground, possible bacteria, and an atmosphere. If we can thicken the atmosphere, direct sunlight to the planet using mirrors, bring oxygen, plant trees, dig up the water, someday Mars could be like Earth, and a person could walk on Mars with a shirt and no helmet! The reason why you can plant things in Mars is because its soil is very similar to Earth’s. Even if we can’t do all that to Mars, we could possibly still live in oxygenated huge biospheres. Talk about a chance of survival! The human race will still live on without Earth. There are many possible survival chances. Exoplanets make up most of our chances. All we have to do is keep the space program going and get to work, for the sake of technology and our life! During World War II, around the early 1940’s, engineer James Wright was working for the US, trying to create an inexpensive substitute for synthetic rubber at a General Electric lab in Connecticut. When he dropped boric acid into silicone oil, he got a substance that was stretchier and bouncier than rubber, and with a weird added feature: when you flattened it against a newspaper or comic-book page, it picked up a perfect copy of the print it touched. This was the first Silly Putty ever made. But not everyone was happy about the invention of Silly Putty. The government didn’t want his invention and called it “Nutty Putty.” But a few years later, businessman Peter Hodgson noticed how popular it was at a party. He renamed it Silly Putty, and marketed it as a toy, and packaged it inside a plastic egg because it was around Easter time when he put it out. creative corner How to Make Wonton Wrappers Jokes By Stephanie Lippke and Morgan Mangrich Q: What do you call a fake noodle? But one night in the full moon the wolves all howled to the full moon in honor. “I just wish I could fly once in a lifetime and touch the sky!” sniffed Gilbert. Then all the wolves went to bed. Suddenly, a fairy came out and woke him up with a special flower. “I will grant you one wish, what shall it be?” asked the fairy. “I wish… I wish I could fly!” said Gilbert excitedly. The fairy put her hands together and light appeared from her wings then she shot out a light ball from her hands to Gilbert. Gilbert began to shake and shake until light exploded from him, then he went back to sleep. The next morning Gilbert wanted to try flying again. Then suddenly, he flew! The other Wolves saw him roam through the sky while screeching with joy, trying to lose his voice from all his joy. When he landed again all the other Wolves asked how he flew. Then he explained them all about the fairy. “We wish we could fly!” sniffed the Wolves at the same time. We decided to interview two GREAT owners, Peter Vernon and Josh Gilbert. Be sure to check out Temperance and Candlelite for a great time!!! By Nathan Peterson and Johnny Isaac Candlelite/Peter Vernon How would you like to walk home from school at lunch time and eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in front of your own TV!? We were surprised by this and many other things we learned about Dewey school from interviewing our neighbor, Joey Garfield, a Dewey alumni from the 1970’s. Q: Where did you grow up? A: I grew up in Evanston, Illinois and I went to St. Athanasius School. N/J (Nathan and Johnny): What is your name? J (Joey): My name is Joey Garfield. N/J: What are you doing for a job now? J: Nowadays I work as a filmmaker. I make music videos, films, and commercials and it’s something my fifth grade teacher Miss Cole thought I would be good at. N/J: Has Dewey changed since you were there? J: Dewey has changed since I went there. There used to be long windows all across the gym walls! The building is much bigger, the playground is very different because the playground was all metal with lots of swingsets, we used to eat lunch down in the basement and we used to be able to go home for lunch. N/J: What? Did you go home? J: Yea, I used to go home and watch TV and go back to school. I would go home and my mom wouldn’t even be there and I’d make my own lunch and watch TV. N/J: Was it fun? J: Yes, but I had a hard time coming back on time! N/J: Was there one day that you came late? J: Yes. Well, you’d hear the bell and run back. N/J: Do you have any kids? Do they go to Dewey? J: I do have kids – Lula and Delcy. Lula went to Dewey until 5th grade and Delcy is there now. It is very strange to be a parent in the same school that I was a kid at. N/J: Why? J: Because there are so many memories I have that it feels like I’ve been everywhere and nowhere at the same time. N/J: What were some of your favorite memories of Dewey? J: One time I brought my dog to show and tell and he ran through the halls. Under the desks, around the lockers, on to the second floor… I had to grab him and walk him home. But it was a fun show and tell. N/J: You really showed it! J: Yes! J: In 3rd grade Mr. Simms had ordered chameleons for our class to observe them. He had the whole class sit in a circle with a small cage behind each of us. His idea was that each kid would grab a chameleon and catch it and put it in the cage. I don’t know why, maybe because I was sitting by the window, but all the chameleons ran and went on me. Kids were picking them off me like fruit. I was kind of laughing and crying at the same time. At the end I felt something tickle… and it was a chameleon that had climbed up my pant leg. I reached down and pulled his tail off. Mr. Simms took that opportunity to explain that chameleons shed their tails. J: We went to Camp Timberlee. We were going to camp Timberlee way back then. I was going to Dewey in the late 70’s so we’ve been going to camp Timberlee for a long time. J: You know how Wesley street is called Bill Hannon Drive? That was the principal of our school – a big guy who dressed like Santa Claus during the holidays. He lived a few blocks away on Wesley. J: There was a teacher, Mr. Suso, he was a man who came from Africa. He announced to the school that he would teach any kids who would stay in at recess a few weeks to play the African drums. And 10 of us kids stayed in. We learned to play the talking drums, and the Marimba. That was the first time I had ever seen dreadlocks. Then we had an assembly at night and we performed the drums in the auditorium. J: There was a janitor named Mr. Swenson, and on the last day of school, he would climb on the roof of the school and throw down all the balls and frisbees to the kids and you would have that ball all summer to play with. It was like Christmas in summer. It was the best to see all these balls raining down on us. N/J: What was your favorite subject at Dewey? J: Art. N/J: Why? J: In Art you get to think differently and there aren’t as many rules and it was easier for me to do. I also liked science. N/J: Did you have any different things to do at Dewey that we don’t have that you know of? J: Mr. Suso, the African drummer. You guys have all these before and after school activities… we didn’t have all that. You just went home and played outside. We didn’t have as many structured events. N/J: Who was your favorite teacher? J: Mr. Simms. Ms. Cole, Ms. Burr,… she had a giant iguana that she kept under heat lamps in her room. N/J: What did you do for fun at Dewey? J: I really liked the talent show. The fun was hanging out with so many kids and being able to hang out in and out of school. And I’m still friends with a lot of those kids today. N/J: Where did you live when you went to Dewey? J: 3 houses down. On Elinor the house with the yellow door. My parents still live there now. J: When I was in 2nd grade the teachers went on strike. They were marching with picket signs. N/J: Why? J: I don’t think they were being treated right or paid enough. And we would bring them hot chocolates. And they won! They got what they wanted. N/J: Is there anything else you want to tell us about when you went to Dewey? J: Yes. Dewey school is haunted. N/J: What?!!! J: I can’t tell you any more. We learned some pretty cool things about Dewey. We hope you did too, but we are still wondering why Dewey school is haunted. We might do a little investigation to find out a little more on the subject of Dewey being haunted. Q: What inspired you to start a restaurant? A: The original restaurant started in 1951 and in 2000 it closed. Three buddies and I used to come here all the time and we decided to reopen it. The only thing here from the original restaurant is the sign out front. Q: Why did you name your business Candlelite? A: No idea! But my guess is that, at one time it was a fancy candle light spot. Q: What is your favorite item on your menu? A: BBQ chicken pizza and the sausage pizza. Q: Do you have any culinary experience? A: I have absolutely zero, but I love to eat food! Q: What is your favorite food and why? A: I love steak and potatoes because I guess it seems American! Q: Any ideas for upcoming menu items? A: Corned beef pizza! For St. Patty’s Day! Temperance/Josh Gilbert Q: Where did you grow up? A: I grew up in Evanston. I went to Orrington, Haven, ETHS, and for college – Wesleyan. Q: What inspired you to start a restaurant? A: Because I liked brewing beer and Evanston didn’t have a brewery at that time. Q: Why did you name your business Temperance? A: Evanston is home to the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and has had a complicated history with alcohol. Since we were Evan ston’s first brewery, I wanted to tap into that history. Q: What is your favorite item on your menu? A: The Drop, Quotidienne and Greenwood Beach Q: Do you have any culinary experience? A: Yes, CYRANO’S, a restaurant at Ravinia and a brewer at Hamburger Mary’s Q: What is your favorite food? A: Pasta bolognese! (BOL-en-ayse) Q: Any ideas for upcoming menu items? A: We recently added chips and salsa and are hopeful for new food trucks for the summer! Q: You know kids will be reading this, so what exactly do you do? A: A tap room is a place where everyone can feel welcome, kids can come and play board games and games, while the adults have a drink. Q: Words of wisdom? A: It’s never too late to follow your dreams!!! Candlelight and Temperance have unique stories, yummy food and good drinks. But most of all, kind owners who know how to run a business well. Whenever you or your family has a night off, you can bring your own food to Temperance or you can go to Candlelite (especially on Tuesdays for a “buy one, get one free” pizza special) to have a great meal! march 2017 • page 9 profiles Interviewing the School’s Rock Band By Cassidy Donovan, Jexa Edinberg and Sylvia Wallace Four amazing fourth graders and an awesome fifth grader have started a band!
