Saybrook Lights Up as we continue our Luminaries Tradition
Luminaries History
Centuries ago in Spain, people lit tiny bonfires of wood to light the pathway for the Christ child. Early settlers brought luminary
to Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Today, these small fires of pinion wood can still be seen throughout the Southwest – sometimes lit on the roof of adobe buildings.
Modern luminary consist of a paper bag with about two inches of sand with a long burning candle. These are used to line walks,
driveways, curbs, house fronts, streets, walls, and occasionally placed in patterns with Christmas themes, such as trees and stars.
The luminaries are lit at dusk on Christmas Eve and often burn throughout the night. In some areas, contests are held and tour
bus companies arrange trips to view neighborhoods, or whole communities organize walking or caroling tours.
Carry on the Tradition
Your luminaries will be delivered to your home between December 9th and the 22nd. If you are not home, they may be left in
your mail box or near your front door. We appreciate your donation of $3.00/kit or $5/double kits, towards our next year’s
purchase of luminaries.
INSTRUCTIONS
*Fold down the top of each sack, making a 1” cuff around the top.
*Fill each sack with enough sand, gravel, birdseed, or cat litter to stabilize the candle inside. Longer burning may be obtained if
the candle is placed in a flat tin can, but it is not necessary.
*Place sacks with candles evenly along the property line ON THE HOUSE SIDE OF THE SIDEWALK.
*Light all candles at 5:00 pm on Christmas Eve. If you are going to be away at this time, please arrange for a neighbor to set
your candles out for you.
*If it is windy or raining or it is impossible to keep the candles lit, we suggest lighting them at 5:00 pm on Christmas Day.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Michele Chapman , Luminaries Coordinator
