J. B E N N E T T “SOMETHING SOMETHING PATRICK-AL “BARTIMAEUS PEOPLE ....” Sprung from the Internet, the tale of a blind beggar sitting along a busy city sidewalk. As people scurried by, his “Help A Blind Man” sign was less than successful. Someone drew him a new sign, “It’s A Beautiful Day, But I Can’t See It!”. People slowed their pace a bit, looked at the sign, gave him something. Seems “he did better”. Sixtysomething by now, her blindness a birth defect; her parents and mine were friends of many years. Despite several medical procedures during childhood, her sight was no better -- even, worse. Our families lost contact over time after our parents’ deaths. I do recall that she did well in school, used resources then at hand for those visually impaired, loved to sing and dance. But how would you, how might I, answer her 1950s question, “Mommy, what does television look like?” Macular degeneration afflicted my aunt’s later years. Familiarity with every inch of her home made easier that burden. A wonderful baker, her oven stayed set at “350”. Recipes? “I just know”, but help with measuring and mixing was always welcome, and deliciously rewarded! A bright magnifying lamp and bookson-tape were such blessings. Prayers? “Mass Prayers I have memorized, and there is my Rosary.” But it was frustrating. Often, she did not recognize someone walking toward her, certainly never intending to snub them. Restaurant menu? “Please tell me what is on it”. Bartimaeus, Jericho’s blind beggar. Fall foliage? — he had no idea! A pretty face, a smile, matching clothes, color co-ordinates -- even the concept of color! — all of them, and so much more, mysteries to him. Could he “hear” or “feel” the value of coins tossed his way? But Bartimaeus “saw” that Jesus was passing. Nothing else mattered! He just had to speak with Jesus. The crowd that day? Borrowing the title of an awful movie, they had “eyes wide shut”! Oh, they saw Bartimaeus; they saw Jesus, too — and tried to “see to it” that Jesus kept going. Bartimaeus, they thought, was not worth Jesus’ bother. Fortunately, their “vision” improved — wondrously! Their “second sight” led Bartimaeus to Jesus. Can’t you just hear them: “Careful now ... watch that rock ... a few steps more .... Just hold my arm; don’t be afraid”. How crystal clear their vision: “You have nothing to fear from Him! Get up! He is calling you.” This Gospel, like so many, has what I call a “sleeper line” which we might miss, but one which is well worth our noticing. Bartimaeus, we are told, set aside his cloak, wrapped tightly around him, as he approached Jesus. His cloak — to keep him warm? Wrapped around him to avoid someone stealing this, one of his few possessions? What spiritual “cloaks” are we wearing, wrapped ever so tightly around us? Complacency? Indifference? Keeping Jesus at safe distance? Minimalist attitudes about Eucharist? A bad habit that is no better? Anger? Bitterness? An unwillingness to forgive a hurt, real or imagined? Well. .. , “Get up! He is calling you!” — and me! Jesus asked Bartimaeus, “What do you want me to do for you?” As if Jesus did not know? As if He had not noticed Bartimaeus, and heard the crowd telling him to be quiet! As if He had not watched, as Bartimaeus was being led toward Him. “Lord, I want to see ....” My first Pastor, Father Henry Phillips.... Wonderful priest and pastor, ever-patient mentor to a newlyordained “know-it-all”; his sudden death, at age 52, in a 1976 auto accident was devastating! How consoling during those awful days, and so often there-after, was recalling a homily he preached about Bartimaeus, with a punch line that I want never to forget: “And the first person he saw was Jesus!” Small wonder, my using the Bartimaeus Gospel, and that powerful image, at my aunt’s Funeral. We need to be like that crowd outside Jericho more than we often imagine. For our myopia, our “eyes wide shut”, we need to remove the spiritual blind-folds, and cast off the spiritual “cloaks” which narrow our vision. We need to be healed of our spiritual macular degeneration which enables us only to see the periphery, to peel away the spiritual cataracts which cloud our sight. That done, with our “second sight”, even our “work in progress”, today’s Gospel has for you and for me Henry Phillips’ “awesome!’ ending, “And the first person he saw was Jesus!” Blessings galore!!! 2 ” T HIRTIETH S UNDAY IN O RDINARY T IME O CTOBER 25, 2015 ALL SAINTS DAY, SUNDAY ~ NOVEMBER 1 PRESIDER SCHEDULE Saturday, 5:00PM October 31, 2015 Msgr. T HIRTIETH S UNDAY IN O RDINARY T IME O CTOBER 25, 2015 Dear Reader, You don’t know me but you will hear about me if and when you listen to the Jesus stories. I’m not a very important character in the story, although I have come to know all the big leaders: Peter, Mary Magdalene, James, Paul, Martha, Mary, John. They are now my bothers and sisters. I am writing to you from the past. I want to put my story down in words so others might hear and come to believe. My name is Bartimaeus. My father Timaeus was a merchant in the city of Jericho, “the oldest city in the world”. He was one of the few who was able to make some money dealing with the thousands who passed through the city on their way to Jerusalem for the feasts. Unlike the other merchants he was more than willing to sell his wares to the Roman soldiers. The local synagogue leaders and the Pharisees shunned him because of that. They call the Gentiles “the dogs” and it was not hard to understand why. Many of those soldiers were bullies, and the Romans taxed us to the marrow of the bone. But growing up, I heard my father tell my mother, “God has given me a blind son and I will not abandon him. The fools who lead the people say that I am being punished by God for my sins. But what kind of God is that? They have forgotten all about the mercy of God. They know rules and laws, but they don’t know God”. My father was an outcast from the synagogue and he had an outcast son, me. But his love for me was like the tree near running waters. It never faded. And then, one day, when I was fourteen years old, he was gone. The so-called “freedom fighters”, the zealots heard about his dealings with Roman soldiers and one day, they slaughtered four soldiers and my father at his shop. They took a Roman sword and put it through his body and announced loudly, “This is what we will do to the friends of the Romans”. My mother was terrified, and without my father she had no way to survive. She moved to a small town called Emmaus where her brother’s family lived. He was struggling to feed a wife and three children, so when I told my mother that I would not leave Jericho, she did not argue with me. I spent ten years living as a beggar. Every day without fail, I would go to the street that passed through the city on the way to Jerusalem. There was every type of person walking that route. The priests and levites walked it going to the Temple. There were thieves and brigands looking to rob the crowds in Jerusalem. There were Roman soldiers and even occasionally, the Roman procurator Pilate. And then one day, there was the prophet from Galilee that everyone had heard so much about. He came to our synagogue and preached. I was stunned. I could not see him, but his every word was a light into my heart and soul. The preacher believed in the same God as my father - a God of mercy and forgiveness, a God who was Abba, a Father to each of us. He told us that God desired that we simply change our hearts and love without condition and limit. It seems impossible but it would be a joy. Two days later as he was leaving the city with a large crowd following him. I could not contain myself, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me”. The crowd tried to silence me but I only shouted louder. And then, he stood before me and I told him “I want to see” and then I could see. What I saw in front of me was the love of God. My heart was on fire. It still is. I followed and later watched as he was brutally killed. But death could have no hold on this man. Years later He still lives in us. He wants to live in you. Follow.
