Cultural Connections Program: This free program coordinated
through the Multicultural Student Services & Programs Office is
designed to provide an orientation opportunity for first generation,
ethnic and/or culturally diverse students. Everyone is welcome to
attend, but please note that some of the sessions require an RSVP.
NOTE: Diversity Scholars (recipients of the Diversity Commitment
Scholarship) and Bilingual Teacher Scholars are required to attend.
You will have a chance to meet WOU staff members and current
students that are excited to work with you and share information
about programs and leadership opportunities on campus that will be
useful to you in your transition to Western Oregon University. If

Equipment Rental Tables

Two tents will be setup to rent hand-trucks and equipment
throughout the day. The tents will be available to answer
questions, rent equipment, and give directions. Hand truck
rentals are $5 per half hour, per hand-truck, with all proceeds
going toward WOU Alumni Scholarship Fund.

Veterans in Higher Ed.

Even after serving in the U.S. military, college can still be
intimidating. The time you served may leave you feeling out
of place in the classroom, but you are not alone. The Western
Oregon University Veteran Success Center is a place where
student-veterans from similar backgrounds come together to
be more successful in their academic careers. We will talk
about student-veteran realities and resources that are available
from our Veterans Services Coordinator.
Teacher Licensure Exam Preparation

This session is strongly recommended for all new transfer
students who plan to become licensed teachers. It includes
important information about which exams to take, how much
they cost, when/where to take them, and some specific
preparation and test taking strategies.
Early FAFSA Filing and More Financial Aid

Big changes for financial aid--FAFSA Opening Day
is October 1, 2016 for the 2017-18 academic year.
Come to this session for your need-to-knows about early

DegreeWorks: Understanding Your Degree
Audit

Degree Works the audit system that is used here at
Western Oregon University, is new to most faculty,
staff, and new freshmen. If you are working on earning a
degree then you need to learn how to read your degree audit.
We will explain some of the more common questions, along
with examples. How to run what-if's, this is how you can see
what it would look like if you changed your degree.
Introduction to Moodle

Moodle is the Learning Management System (LMS)
we use at WOU. Online and Hybrid courses are
delivered via Moodle, and many faculty use Moodle for
face-to-face classes also. Come to this session to learn the
basics of Moodle----what it is, how to use it, what to expect,
and where to look for help.

SEP TRIO Orientation

Welcome to the Student Enrichment Program. During this
session, we are going to get to know each other better and
learn about how SEP can support you in getting that degree

CULTURAL CONNECTIONS—
Beginning of a Great Journey: Kick-Off
Event Keynote: Qurrat Ann Kadwani
4:15-6:00pm, WUC Pacific Room
This session will give you the opportunity to learn about the
Cultural Connections Program and the sessions that will be
offered during New Student Week as well as meet the staff
from the Multicultural Student Services & Programs Office
and the MCRs (Multicultural Representatives). Join us for this
Kick Off Event and you will get to see an amazing keynote
presentation by Qurrat Ann Kadwani. Qurrat Ann Kadwani
is an award-winning actress, producer, Mc, TV host and
philanthropist. She is also the first South Asian female to
have a solo play, They Call Me Q, produced off Broadway.
She has won many awards for her solo performance
including Best Actress, Best Play, NYS Assemblyman, and
many more. In They Call Me Q, Qurrat takes you through
the story of a girl form Bombay growing up in Boogie Down
Bronx, who seeks balance between the cultural pressures
from here traditional parents, and wanting acceptance into
her new culture. She transforms into 13 different characters
that have shaped her life, and have made her to who she is
now. Qurrat Ann Kadwani has been labeled as “a woman
who shapes the future”!
Limited seats are available for this event - If you did not
reserve your spot by September 10th, you can register at the
door 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the event to find
out if there are any seats still available.

Student-Veterans and Military Dependents
Social Hour

Following the “Detours and Pothole Remedies for StudentVeterans in Higher Education” session there will be a social
and ice breaker event specifically for our
student-veterans as well as military dependent students. This is
an opportunity to meet and greet with other
student-veterans and meet some of the individuals that are in
charge of developing veteran specific events and programs.
The Student Veterans of America chapter president and vice
president will also be available to explain the benefits of being
a member of our SVA chapter. This is not a “mandatory
fun-day” but instead will be a laid-back and relaxing
opportunity to meet some of your peers.

Abby’s House: A Resource On the Road To
Success

Abby’s House is a resource and referral center
available to persons of any gender. Our mission is
to provide the WOU community with educational
programming, information, and referral services designed to
promote equity and non-violence. We embrace a feminist
model that empowers all people to actively stand against all
forms of violence, harassment, verbal abuse, discrimination,
and hatred. Learn about our history, services, and programs.
You will meet some of the advocates who work at Abby’s
House and find out about our upcoming events and activities.

First Year Writing Placement Challenge
Exam

The Writing Placement Challenge Exam gives eligible
students the opportunity to challenge their placements into
WR 115 or WR 122. The student will write an argument essay
during a 2-hour supervised session, addressing tasks similar to
those encountered in first-year writing classes. An SAT score
of 480 or 490 or an ACT score of 20 is eligible to challenge
placement in WR 115. An SAT score of 680 or 690 or an
ACT score of 30 is eligible to challenge placement in WR 122.
Students must bring photo identification and proof of SAT or
ACT score.
Solving Hunger—One Wolf at a Time

With over 50% of our campus not knowing where
their next meal will come from, we have a
desperate need to help feed our fellow wolves. Come and
learn about the WOU Food Pantry and how you can aid in or

will assist you in staying healthy and balanced.
WOLF Ride: WOU Safe Ride Program

WOLF Ride is a complimentary shuttle service for
WOU students who would otherwise walk alone at
night. Information about how to use this free service in the
Monmouth and Independence area will be presented.

help students with. Learn how to send faxes, where the
ATM's are, where you can get food, and how to reserve a room.

MSU Internet Session: Life is a Highway!

The Multicultural Student Union is an organization
whose mission is to promote diversity and cultural
awareness throughout the WOU campus and the
surrounding community. Whether it's with their Dia de los
Muertos Altar, the Annual Pow-wow, the Women of Culture
Celebration, the African American Awareness Celebration,
the Out and Proud program or their Nuestra Fiesta Latina
program, MSU continues to make significant contributions to
the Western Oregon University campus. This club is open to

An Introduction To Critical Pedagogy
(Critical Teacher and Learning)

This presentation in an introduction to the work
of Paulo Freire and others who have developed a
critical, alternative form of education that is dedicated to
social justice issues. The goal is to raise a critical
consciousness in students and help them participate in
various forms of community activism. Paulo wanted to use
education as a means of helping to make society more
humane, democratic, and egalitarian.

can I get the cheapest books?" Learn the rules of
the road in this session and tune in to all the tricks to
purchasing textbooks in a way that will save you
HUNDRED$ OF DOLLAR$ during your journey at

sell some books back to us for up to 50% of what you paid

note takers per term to take notes in the classes they are

note takers per term to take notes in the classes they are

The mission of the WOLF Ride: WOU's Safe Ride program is to provide a free and reliable shuttle

Sunday. Ride requests are taken on a first come, first served basis (there is no "route"). There is only
one van. WOLF Ride is equipped with a wheelchair lift. If you call prior to operating hours or the driver
cannot take your call, please leave a message on the voicemail stating the
following:
Your name
Location and destination at which you would like to be picked up/
dropped off
The time you would like to be picked up
A number at which you can be reached (the driver will call to
confirm your ride upon receipt of the message)

1. Make sure you put your name, building and RA’s name on this page. If you live
off-campus, please include your phone number.
2. Check your NSW program guide and look for “Next Exit WOU”
postcard sessions marked with a “Next Exit WOU” icon
3. Attend these sessions and take your “Next Exit WOU” postcard (this page) with
you.
A PLUS Team member will stamp your “Next Exit WOU” postcard at the end of
each session.
4. Turn your “Next Exit WOU” postcard in to the WUC Information Desk OR the
Residential Service Center Drop Box by FRIDAY, 9/23 at 5:00pm
5. Come to the NSW Variety Show on Saturday, 9/24 at 6pm in the WUC Pacific
Room. Prizes will be awarded to the individuals with the most punches!
