The fun of it (for the pinup style that I started with)! I've always loved dressing up, so why would I not want to get paid for it! How did you get into modelling? I went to a friend's 1950's themed birthday party and decided to go dressed as a pinup girl in a polka dot swimming costume and sailor hat. When I got all dressed up, I couldn't believe how much I looked like one of the Gil Elvgren illustrations, or as my friend put it "one of those tattoos on a fat guy". After the party, I was showing my mum the photos and she said "why not give it a go!". I did a shoot with a friend who does photography at uni and sent a few photos off to the What Katie Did (a faux vintage lingerie company) photographer. I honestly didn't really expect to even get a reply, but he did reply, the next day! After that, I went to do a shoot for WKD...and the rest is history! How long have you been modelling? Around a year and a half now. Although I have done bits and pieces from the age of 3 for jobs given to photographer friends of the family! What does fashion mean to you? Not much. I love clothes, wearing them, buying them and dressing people in them, but 'fashion' becomes very boring when everyone looks the same. True fashion is when you're brave enough to wear something different to everyone else and you manage to pull it off! That's of course how all fashions start anyway. Fortunately for me, I'm always ahead of my time ;) What type of shoots have you done? When I was younger I did one for the first interactive TV guide things and something for Elle and Marie Claire (dressed as a fairy!). More recently though, I have done quite a few pinup style shoots, one cosplay/ pinup shoot in Tokyo and a more recent 'arty' doll 03 shoot. Do you model full time or part time? Part time. I know people who are really successful in this particular line of modelling, they are everywhere on the vintage scene, and they still have a day job to subsidise! 'Alternative modelling' generally doesn't pay much unless you marry Marylin Manson (eh, Dita?) or something similar, and being only 5"5 and not stick thin, I couldn't branch out into 'normal' modelling! Do you have a favourite style/look? In shoots or real life? In shoots, I am definitely a pinup girl (although I seriously need to work on my wink!). I've learnt the hard way to always have a spare pair of false eyelashes in my purse and never shoot without them! In life, my look changes every day from stylish, to quirky, to getting dressed in the dark when most things are in the wash! What has been your favourite shoot? I really enjoyed my most recent Christmas one (photos yet to come up on my fan page as I did this today!). I also loved doing my shoot in Harajuku, apart from the 85 midge bites that I got all over my legs during it! Have you been abroad, what has been your favourite location and why? Yes, and I plan to go abroad a lot more! Japan was really fantastic; everyone should go at some point on their lives. The contrast between the wonderful old culture of the temples, geishas and tea ceremonies and the space age technology and just plain weirdness that could only ever be expected in Japan was really something and made it such an interesting and fun place to visit. What kind of work do you do in regards to modelling? Faux vintage lingerie mainly, although I'd like to work for one of those brilliant latex dress companies out there and also faux vintage clothing companies. Is there any work you wouldn't do and what is your favourite style/ type? (Topless, lingerie, fashion: I wouldn't do nude, mainly because I’d be too embarrassed! Some nude photography can be really beautiful as the human form does create wonderful shapes. Having done a lot of life drawing classes I can really appreciate that. However, a lot of nude modelling is not so nice. Any 'implied nude work' that I might ever consider would have to be extremely tasteful and arty! Saying that, I am a fan of nipple tassels; I think they look great! Miltary Trends are back on the road! Military trends have definitely stood out the most this winter. Military trends have always attracted attention, and Marc Jacobs is definitely one designer that has everyone’s eyes in his direction. both designers have accomplished what they have been searching for. Jacobs has added feminine features to his garments, by adding a nipped in tuck to highlight a woman’s bust, but straight tailored high-waisted trousers to entwine masculine features. Nothing can overcome the military craze; it has become the new urban outerwear this year in the Winter/Fall 2010 Collection and of course, the must-havelook of the season. Be inspired, be independent, be creative and get ready to find your fashion style within. Military winter coats have also grabbed a lot of interest; women are now gaining more confidence. Every outfit designed incorporates a sharp and delicate style. All ideas are designed to envelope a woman’s figure yet manage to incorporate the new masculine look. This season, Fashion Designers Marc Jacob and Burberry have aimed to influence those who don’t have much inspiration with their personal style. Trying to merge a masculine style with a feminine look is the next big thing. The trends bought out this year were mainly for helping women with their individual style and finding their true inner selves. The attitude; personality and feistiness. Both designers have combined masculine/military boyish looks with feminine angel looking styles. By choosing military combat trousers with knee high boots, 04 Classic army and navy colour styles are a sure-fire hit. You should layer up in khaki tones or maybe take a bold stand in sharp cuts decorated with buttons and braids just so you can begin your Winter/Fall 2010 look. Maybe the military look is an understatement because its old-skool or has no significance to fashion today, but that’s not true, its bringing back something new, it’s almost like Jean Paul Gaultier’s indulgence in the bustiers, that we rarely choose to wear these days! Tips Women’s military fashion is parallel to the men’s military fashion trend, and here is how you can complete that look: Army green is the most important colour to wear, followed by a sharp navy colour A military jacket, military gilet, khaki green coat, aviator or a duffle coat are the key piece for the Autumn/Winter Fall style Aviator boots/military fashion boots are also important pieces to your style, this dual embellishment will make you stand out from the rest, and let them know your style instantly. How to wear it this Winter/Fall For the military fashion trend, the two main looks are aviator and army The aviator side of the trend is less obvious. It has to be sharp and sleek with plenty of slim cuts and curves. Khaki greens mixed with dark-browns will bring darker masculine hues to the style Lastly, loose fitting chino or cargo pants. The appearance of camouflage print would not be such a good idea, as it may look cheap and amateur. We recommend that you avoid it! Women do this to become more attractive to the opposite sex and to make them appear more feminine. It is a form of expression to express beauty and to hide what they dislike about themselves. Millions of women attempt to use makeup to their advantage but some clearly rely too heavily on makeup. It may sound cliché but true beauty really does lie beneath and you don’t need 20 layers of foundation to achieve that. Women can be oblivious to the fact that they don’t need to bury themselves in foundation to be attractive to men, but some women can simply not live without it. A lot of men favour the less-is-more approach because women do not need makeup to be beautiful. toms make-up content??? Statistics show that 1 in 5 men wish that their partners and friends would tone down the makeup and adopt a more natural look but only 12% of women admitted to wearing too much makeup. So why do women find it a necessity to apply excessive amounts of makeup on a daily basis? I believe it is down to insecurities, I do not have a problem with women wearing makeup but there is a limit. I think makeup should emphasize a women’s beauty, not define it. The media has such a powerful influence on today’s society. Women are brainwashed to believe you must wear makeup to become attractive but this is simply not the truth. Celebrities such as Katie Price, Christina Aguilera and Jodi Marsh are known for wearing a lot of makeup, but it doesn’t make you beautiful. Some women wear it because they feel self conscious and some women just wear it because they feel “naked” without it. You should not listen to the media, you should not follow celebrities that wear makeup. You do not need thousands of pounds of makeup to make you feel special and unique. It doesn’t take makeup to portray true beauty and the natural look is definitely better and makeup should not define a person’s individuality and appearance. 05 Winter Sun Fash 06 cream miltant jacket, £24.99, H&M dirty brown boot, £35.00, ASOS floral pansie dress, £22.99, Warehouse black denier tights, £3.99, Debenhams peach heart in/out jersey, £18.99, Topshop hion Exclusive khaki military chino, £26.99, Topman black captain jumper, £35.99, Next down brown boot, £45.99, River Island bag, £30.00, American Apparell 06 Mens Autumn/ Winter Fashion The snow might be keeping you cold but don’t let that stop you, step out this winter with the hottest winter looks! This seasons coolest trends are the Military, Vintage and the Indie rock looks. The gorgeous David Beckham has been spotted punking it up with the indie rock look and so have Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz, it’s great to see the boys following in their daddy’s footsteps! Our very own screen-to-chic JLS lads have taken a liking to the military look and have been stomping on the front covers of every fashion magazine. If there is anything that you simply cannot go out without this winter it’s the hi-top boots or trainers either will do, they’ll keep you warm and have the ladies sliding in your direction, that’s if the ice hasn’t melted! If your feeling a bit adventurous and want to go all out why not try a bit of Guy liner?! I strongly recommend the Chanel Khol applying a little near your tear ducts and on your bottom lid will give you that Edward Cullen-Twilight edge, but apply it softly we don’t want you poking yourself in the eye and going all count Dracula on us. Another must have this winter are the accessorise. Topman, River Island and H & M have some fantastic bags, mits, gloves and jewellery all at affordable prices so there is no need to walk out in your sweat pants or jump suit unless Santa has come early and brought you glad tidings from Louis Vuitton. For those who are way to hot to be cold and want to impress the ladies this Winter make sure your all dressed to impress and you never know the new year might bring you more then just a modelling contract. Wink. 05 05 A WoMen’s Opinion I am waiting for the day when my boyfriend or male friend asks to borrow my mascara and I fear that this day may be imminent. Gone are the days when a woman would take longer than a man to get ready. An ever increasing amount of beauty products for men, has turned a once ten minute routine into hours of preparation. Shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, shaving products, hair styling, face and anti-wrinkle creams and, dare I say it, the occasional application of fake tan have been adopted in to their daily routines, giving them ammunition to turn the tables on us women. (I’m willing to believe the fake tan is for special occasions). But who am I to moan when it makes you all look that little bit more handsome and now there’s something for you metro-sexual males out there to, possibly, make you look even better... makeup. Eyeliner, mascara, concealer, foundation and lip-gloss. Sounds like the insides of a women’s makeup bag right? Wrong. These are cosmetic products (makeup) that UK based men’s grooming product retailers, Aston Mitchell advertise to men. They are not alone, massively popular women’s cosmetic brands such as Clinique and Yves Saint Laurent also offer men a range of products. YSL’s women’s favourite Touche Eclat is set to become a best seller and with celebrity advocates such as Russell Brand and Jared Letto having turned ‘Guy liner’ in to a global phenomenon, men are becoming more aware of the wonders of a little make up. But there a few issues with this latest craze. One: can men apply make up? To help you guys out just type men’s make up into YouTube and watch a tutorial. Two: (this also goes for women), less is always more, watch those foundation lines guys! Three: is it really needed? There’s something very attractive about a rough and ready man. It has to be said however that I am on the fence when it comes to men wearing makeup. A little bit of cover up to hide the effects of a heavy weekend, or to enhance your skin or to cover the odd spot can be a god send, but to go out with a full face of makeup like teen pinup Zac Efron is truly a turn off. I know as a woman I use products to, “enhance”, the way I look and I would be horrified to wake up, look in the mirror and think, is this as good as it gets? So why should men feel the same. 04 Mens Winter Fashion In this month’s issue of Unique Fashion our featured Autumn/Winter style is military. So I felt it was only fitting to profile the UK’s leading high street military trend setter Allsaints. This once small UK based company, set up in 1994, has gone from strength to strength over the past 14 years. Allsaints now has twenty five stand alone stores and is in thirty four department stores nationwide. Allsaints is not just happy conquering Britain it has also gone over seas with stores in America, Hong Kong and Shanghai and it doesn’t look like it’s stopping there. This constantly developing company has grown from a menswear only brand to women’s wear, children’s clothes and even home ware products. It is not just fashion that Allsaints are passionate about their strong and deliberate relationship with music has meant they have collaborated with some of the world’s biggest music stars such as Kings of Leon, U2 and Robbie Williams. They also host underground AllMusic parties throughout the year to showcase up and coming British music talent. Allsaints themselves claim to be “the first stop for design led fashion that never follows trends” and I do have to agree with that. However their men’s line has a strong military theme which is bang on trend for this season whether intentional or not. The brand known for its knitwear, distressed materials, ramskull signature and undoubtedly some of the hottest men’s military boots is without doubt becoming a high street favourite. Their men’s coats, echo the military coats one imagines from world war two. Their leathers and of course footwear could also define the military fashion for this season. Military is definitely the hot trend for guys this Autumn/ Winter and Allsaints should definitely be you first call if this style is for you, they have some of the hottest looks around. 03 c o n t e n Pg. 03 - Exclusive Interview Pg. 04 - Makeup - womens opinion, what they really think!
