Our club is administered by a Board of Directors comprised of a President, President‐Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, Immediate Past President, another past president and up to ten Directors. The board is responsible for managing the activities of the club, making decisions on donation requests, and setting the direction of the club. The president, as the Executive Officer of the club, presides over monthly board meetings. All club members are invited to attend board meetings, however only those on the Board of Directors are eligible to vote on any actions taken by the club. Elections for the next Optimist year are held annually at a club meeting in the spring. Directors are elected for a two‐year term while officers are elected for a one‐year term. 1

About the Optimist Club
History of The Noon Optimist Club of Centerville The Noon Optimist Club of Centerville is an affiliate of Optimist International, which was formed in 1918. We are in Zone 14 of the Ohio District along with a number of other local clubs including, Centerville Evening, Centerville South Metro, Springboro, and Waynesville. Our Club was chartered on March 19, 1968 as The Washington Square Optimist Club with 38 members. A current member, Paul Stull, has been a member since January 1969 when he was inducted into the new Club. Over the years, meetings have been held at Washington Square Shopping Center, Antonio’s, Ryan’s, and at Yankee Trace Golf Course Clubhouse, where the Club still meets today. The name of our Club was changed in 1975 to better identify with the community being served. We are the largest Optimist Club in Ohio and certainly one of the most active clubs. The focus of all Optimist Clubs is “Friend of Youth” and our club strives to uphold that motto by providing numerous activities for the youth of our community. Mission Statement As a friend of youth, our mission is to provide positive programs and activities to benefit youth in local and surrounding communities to help them grow and prosper as future leaders. (Adopted by the Board of Directors on September 22, 2011) 7

Christian D. Larson
Larson Award
Award
Christian D. Larson Award Recipients The Christian D. Larson award is a lifetime achievement recognition given to a person who has exemplified outstanding service in his/her Optimist club. The award was named in honor of Mr. Larson because he was the author of the well‐known Optimist Creed which was written in 1912, and what we as Optimists live by every day. It originally appeared in his book Your Forces and How to Use Them. It was adopted as Optimist International's creed in 1922. Many have found inspiration in The Optimist Creed. In hospitals, the creed has been used to help patients recover from illness. In locker rooms, coaches have used it to motivate their players. Activities, Awards and Fund Raisers
Club Fund Raisers Christmas Tree Lot Annually we sell Christmas trees as one of our largest fund raising events. Many families make this a special event in order to pick out that perfect tree. Open Thanksgiving through Christmas, located behind the Centerville Municipal Building. Avenue of Flags Our Avenue of Flags program is our fastest growing fundraising event. We place a 3’ x 5’ flag near the curb in front of our subscribers’ home or business for Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day. Our two‐person teams deliver and pick up the flags before and after each holiday. Tom Frazier Tee Off for Youth We hold a well‐orchestrated golf outing every July. Children from Dayton Children’s Hospital are taught how to golf in the morning before the adults scramble in the afternoon. Proceeds benefit both Dayton Children’s Hospital hematology/oncology department, the Optimist Childhood Cancer Campaign and also funds youth activities for the year. Club‐Sponsored Awards – Scholarships – Activities Essay Contest An opportunity for young people to write an essay and compete against others for scholarships. Optimist International Junior Golf Championship A golf competition that starts at the local level and continues on to a National level. Tiger Woods won this event four times. Fishing Derby An opportunity for children to fish from three fully stocked ponds. Prizes are given in every age group. Haunted Trail A Halloween event sponsored in cooperation with the Washington Township Park District. Groups of children are led on a trail in the park that features "fright stations." 17
Activities, Awards and Fund Raisers (continued)
Oratorical Contest An opportunity for young people to write a speech on a given topic and present it to the club. The local winners compete at the district level for scholarship awards. Safety on Wheels A bicycle rodeo that includes bike inspections, an obstacle course, free helmets, and other prizes. Tri‐Star Basketball A free event, open to children that features dribbling, passing and free throw competitions. Prizes are awarded to the winners in each age group along with t‐shirts for every child. Tri‐Star Soccer A free event, open to children that features shooting, throwing and dribbling competitions. Prizes are awarded to the winners in each age group along with t‐shirts for every child. TOP Soccer TOP Soccer is a special needs soccer program that plays in the fall at a Centerville park, with about 170 players on 7 fields age 5 and up, with various types of challenges. The program welcomes every child that has difficulty playing in the "regular" recreational programs. Started by a member, the Club contributes funding support, and there are opportunities to join the many Optimists that volunteer as Coaches and Assistant Coaches, and help on registration day. Build‐a‐Bear Build‐a‐Bear is sponsored by the Childhood Cancer Committee for the Oncology and Hematology patients at Dayton Children’s Medical Center and their siblings. The kids select an animal from a large assortment, brought by the Build‐a‐Bear store. The children participate in a “heart ceremony” and then put the heart into their bear or animal before it is stitched and then select an outfit to dress their special animal. We also offer face painting, books, balloons, and food during the free event. Adopt‐a‐Child Our Centerville Noon Optimists are given the opportunity to buy gifts for a Centerville School student and his or her siblings during the holiday season. The adopter is given a wish list from a child and asked to purchase and wrap gifts totaling no more than $75. This is our part of bringing smiles to many faces this holiday season. Easter Egg Hunt This free event is held, for children under the age of ten, at one of the Washington Township Park District locations. Prizes are awarded to children who find specially colored candy filled eggs as well as age group prizes. 18
Activities, Awards and Fund Raisers (continued)
Youth Appreciation Award The month of November is Youth Appreciation Month, sponsored by Optimists International. Annually the Noon Optimist Club of Centerville honors a student from each unit at the high school during Youth Appreciation Month. The intent of the Optimists' program is to recognize the accomplishments of youth in the home, school, church and community. Will Cale Scholarship This scholarship requires a Counselor’s recommendation and emphasis is on financial need and potential rather than academics or class standing. We fund up to two scholarships each year. The scholarship provides up to $750 per semester for up to six semesters ($4,500 total) at Sinclair College, sufficient funding for an Associate’s Degree. Memorial Scholarship This scholarship provides a $1,500 award to be applied toward tuition at an institution offering an advance degree upon the completion of an accredited program. To qualify, the student must be a resident of Centerville/Washington Township, have a strong record of participation in community service activities and be a graduating senior who will attend an accredited college/university offering a two‐year or a four‐year degree and possess a financial need. Communication Contest for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing This contest offers an opportunity for children who are deaf or hard of hearing to present their thoughts in the community, gaining skills, which can only come from signing or speaking to a large audience. Patterned after the Optimist Oratorical Contest, the Communication Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing offers hearing impaired youth the chance to compete in speech or sign language. Ohio District awards a $3500 scholarship. 19

____________________________________ The Optimist Creed Promise Yourself: To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
