Kool-Aid Play dough
CONGRATULATIONS!
Materials
• ½ cup salt
• 2 cups water
• Saucepan
• Food coloring, tempera powder or Kool-Aid
powder for color (and for great smells)
• 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
• 2 cups sifted flour
• 2 tablespoons alum
Directions
1. Combine salt and water in saucepan and boil
until salt dissolves.
2. Remove from heat and tint with Kool-Aid.
3. Mix oil, flour, and alum in separate bowl and
add to liquid mixture.
4. Carefully knead until smooth. It will be hot
at first.

by Judith Viorst. Use real or play coins to give to
your child(ren) as Alexander’s grandparents give
him birthday money and for them to spend again
when he buys gum and other items. Older children
could also use paper and pencil to do the math
