FORGET Kate, Prince George is the new stately style icon.
Melbourne baby fashion labels have had rush on a clothes fit for a
little king, with Prince George a trend setter among tots.
Eight-month old Prince George has sparked demand for dapper cream
jumpers and cardigans from Melbourne wool label Cable, after
wearing a similar knit when he arrived in New Zealand.
Georgie Austin, Cable designer, said classic baby clothes in natural
fibres are having a resurgence thanks the young royal, who appears to
reflect his mother’s traditional fashion taste.
“They have seen the Prince cuddled up in his mother’s arms on the
tarmac in the knit and they want the same for their little one,” she
said.

Ms Austin, who is associated with the Wool Board and part of the
international Campaign for Wool, of whom the patron is Prince
Charles — George’s grandfather — is sending the Dutch and Duchess
of Cambrige a collection of Cable baby wear for George to wear
when he arrives in Australia.
Ms Austin said parents were happy and willing to invest for nondisposable, Australian-made fashion for their children, in particular
because quality items can be handed down to other children.
“Prince George has renewed parents’ interest in timeless baby clothes.
Instead of dressing their youngsters in fast fashion that is based on
fads.”
“Using pure merino in baby wear is a natural choice because it’s
breathable, versatile and doesn’t irritate their delicate skin.”
Online tots boutique CooCoo Baby have noticed a rise in inquiries for
navy dungarees, similar to those George crawled around in at a play
date in the New Zealand capital.
