Spring 2015 Program Assessment Review Department: Language and Literature Program: Spanish Date of Report: March 21, 2016 Members of Reporting Committee: Lídice Alemán, Alan Bruflat, Adolfo Cacheiro, Catherine Rudin Department/Program Curriculum Map has been completed and submitted. YES NO (Does it need updated or revised?) Please provide a brief description of how assessment activities have been used to improve your program and student learning. (Please respond in 250 words or less). The program has used the results of the Wisconsin Placement Test, given to intermediate students, to update the curriculum in the intermediate Spanish sequence to provide for increased coverage of grammar topics. We have also used the data from oral presentations and compositions to modify our advanced classes to provide for more opportunities for written and oral expression. This past semester we organized a conference where students presented papers in Spanish on literary and cultural topics. We hope to make this a regular event and incorporate it into our assessment. As a part of the assessment reporting process this year, we are seeking information from departments about current recruitment and retention practices. Please provide detailed feedback as this information will be shared with the Assessment Oversight Committee and the Office of Admissions to better inform the institution of current enrollment strategies at Wayne State College. 1. List any departmental recruitment activities in which your faculty/staff participate. (high school visits, regional outreach, campus events, marketing/advertising, letters to prospective students, etc.) 1. In April 2016 the Costa Rica Night will be used to recruit students for the 2017 trip. 3. The Spanish program posts flyers advertising many of its general education and major/minor courses. 4. The Spanish program flyer and major/minor sheet are distributed at Just Juniors Day, to prospective students, and to interested students on request. 2. Spanish Club also hosts a variety of events (e.g. Food Night, Holiday Caroling, Day of the Dead). 3. The Spanish program would like to increase collaboration with Latinos Uniting for campus events. 4. Students, accompanied by faculty, presented papers at the Spanish Undergraduate Research Conference in 2013 (USD) and 2014 (Briar Cliff). 3. Does your department use data to monitor recruitment and retention? If so, what type of data do you use? Data from the WSC website and from the Information Office. 4. What additional data could WSC provide your department to enhance recruitment and retention efforts? Updated lists of majors and minors every semester.
