“Last Things”
OUTLINE: You will submit a 15 page paper, structured around the following
requirements:
 HEAVEN, HELL & PURGATORY (6 pages)—you will research & write an
academic paper on Heaven, Hell & Purgatory & how they play in to Catholic
belief about death.
 TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE (5 pages)— this section is a reflection paper.
Using the book “Tuesdays with Morrie” give concrete examples of how human
life and death look different from the perspective of someone who is dying—or
when you know someone who is dying. Be sure to give your own reaction to the
book/characters, as well as what you thought were the most important lessons
that the book has to teach.
 O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING? (4 pages)- specifically through the life
of Bl. Chiara Badano (via a 45-min. video), you will analyze Christian
approaches life and death differently when their faith is strong, especially in
things that other people might not be so positive about. Should also include an
‘interview section’ with a person approved by Mr. Sutton.
“Fr. Gallitzin”
OUTLINE: You will submit a project including the following:
 OVERVIEW (6 pages)—you will compose a research paper providing an
overview and, more specifically, a moral analysis, of Fr. Gallitzin’s life. This will
involve a fair amount of reading/research!
 PROJECT—you will prepare and present a CONFIDENT and
COMPREHENSIVE presentation on your research. This will involve a teaching
and/or presentation element which can vary according to your planning & Mr.
Sutton’s approval (can be a powerpoint in class, a presentation to grade school
students, etc.).
“Morality & Auschwitz”
OUTLINE: You will submit a 18 page academic paper, structured around the
following requirements:
 WHAT IS AUSCHWITZ? (6 pages)— provide basic information about what
Auschwitz was and what happened there, as well as an analysis of how
Auschwitz attempted to dehumanize those who were imprisoned there (use
specific examples, personal stories, etc.)
 SCHINDLER’S LIST (6 pages)—watch the movie ONLY after having
submitted a video permission form signed by a parent. DO NOT summarize the
movie; rather, using specific characters, events, and/or scenes from the movie
(presented in any order you like), describe: the dehumanizing effect of the Nazi
ethic on characters; the most important moral choices you feel were made and
why; the main moral lessons to be learned from the story, in your opinion.
 ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE IN AUSCHWITZ (6 pages)- 1 page of this will be
brief biographical information about St. Maximilan Kolbe (NO MORE than one
page!); the rest will describe how St. Maximilian tried to follow Christ even in
the midst of the horrible evils of Auschwitz by using specific examples and
descriptions of his time there.
“Screwtape Comes to BG”
OUTLINE: You will submit a 15 page paper, observing the following:
 READ THROUGH some of the “Screwtape Letters” written by C.S. Lewis. Get a
feel for how he composes them and some of the thought process that goes into
them.
 YOUR SCREWTAPE LETTERS (15 pages)- for this ‘creative writing’ exercise,
you will compose some ‘Screwtape Letters’ of your own based on
correspondence between two demons (whether Screwtape/Wormwood or some
of your own creation). You do not need exactly 15 letters, but must have at least
5, and together the letters you compose must total no less than 15 pages and must
be at least 1 page each in length.
“St. Sebastian’s Crown”
OUTLINE: You will submit a 15 page paper, structured around the following
requirements:
 OVERVIEW (4 pages)— using examples from Scripture that refer to sports,
describe why sports can be a good thing in the life of a Christian. You should
make free use of your own experiences or those of friends, family, etc. in this
reflection-style portion of the paper. Also, describe THREE Christian virtues that
you think are KEY to playing sports well and give your reasons for picking those
three. You will also be required during those 4 pages to explain why St.
Sebastian, who never played a sport as far as we know, is the ‘patron saint of
athletes.’
 SPORTS FIGURE (3 pages)- describe a sports figure you admire (any sport)
and give concrete examples of their life in the way that they live out Christian
virtues (even if they are not Christian). Specific references & explanations
required.
 MORAL ANALYSIS (8 pages)- you will pick 2 documentary sources to research
for a moral analysis, with specific references and explanations for each (4 pages
each)
“Band of Brothers”
OUTLINE: You will submit a 24 page academic paper, structured around the
following themes:
 EPISODIC ANALYSIS (20 pages)—following the outline provided, complete a
moral analysis of all 10 episodes of the HBO series ‘Band of Brothers’.
 OVERALL ANALYSIS (4 pages)— give your own overall reaction to the series,
including what you feel were the most important or meaningful moral decisions
made by characters.
“For the Sake of the
Kingdom”
OUTLINE: You will submit a 15 page paper, structured around the following
requirements:
 OVERVIEW (3 pages)—in this first section, you will write an introduction to
religious life in Catholic belief and practice, as well as a reflection on your own
understanding & experience of religious life.
 MAIN BODY (12 pages)—the main portion of this paper will require you to
interview clergy/religious from THREE different religious orders outside of the
school, which need to be approved by Mr. Sutton. You will then type a
reflection-style section for each of these three interviews, concluding it with your
own personal reflections on religious life AFTER having met your interviewees
and hearing their answers.
