Children are connected with
and contribute to their world
Children need to know they are valued members of,
and play an important part in their communities.

Key messages for parents/carers
Welcome children and adults and get to know
each one. Use names.
Point out when a child makes a contribution, for
example, offers a toy to another child, helps another
child, helps to put out or pack away materials.
A
cknowledge when children resolve conflicts with
words, show that they recognise others’ rights,
show empathy and caring.
Model responding to differences in positive ways.
Call attention to the fact that a child is absent.
In all that you do encourage children to learn
to take care of the physical environment.
Encourage children to work and play with other
children as they are interested, and give support
to help them do this constructively.
This outcome is about citizenship, that children
have rights and responsibilities. It is also about
connectedness with the natural environment,
sustainability and connection to culture and traditions.
Children play an active role in their learning and in the
family from the moment they are born. It is important
for them to learn that they can make a positive
difference in all the groups they are part of.
It is important to let children know in ways they can
understand whenever they make a contribution to
the family, no matter how small.
Children notice differences from a very early age.
They learn attitudes toward differences from the
people around them – what they say, the ways
they respond. It is so important for children to feel
comfortable with and respectful of differences.
Enjoying and taking care of the environment is
something children can begin at an early age.
Involve children in helping out with family chores
and daily family life and make it fun and rewarding.

TIP
///
Remember to always share your delight with parents/carers
and children when a child makes progress, achieve something,
tries hard, meets a challenge or overcomes an obstacle. Have
conversations that help parents/carers to see new learning more
clearly and encourage them to build in learning in natural ways
as they go about their daily lives.
