Lexile® Measures for ExamView® Learning Series Reading Passages The Lexile Framework® for Reading is a scientific approach to reading measurement, providing a common scale for matching reader ability and text difficulty. This allows educators and parents to quickly estimate expected reading comprehension and monitor progress. More than 100,000 books and 80 million articles have Lexile® measures, making Lexiles the most widely adopted reading measure today. Y P Explanation of Codes: Words: This is the number of words from the text that were analyzed. This number does not include headers, numbers, chapter headers, etc., as those types of things are not submitted through the Lexile Analyzer®. MSL: This refers to the Mean Sentence Length. A Lexile measure is calculated based on the Mean Sentence Length of a text as well as its semantic difficulty (see below). The Analyzer arrives at a measure by accounting for the length of a particular sentence as well as the complexity and difficulty of that sentence’s content. MLF: This refers to the semantic difficulty, or Mean Log Word Frequency. As explained above, this is the 2nd factor in the twopart equation which comprises the Lexile measure. LEX: This is the certified Lexile measure. It can be used in several ways to assist readability and comprehension. NP: Lexiles can be either numerical, in code form, or both. NP stands for Non-Prose. MetaMetrics® assigns this code to various texts that are considered outside the realm of standard prose. Included in this category would be poems, songs, and recipes. NP is still considered a Lexile measure for a selection.
