Language and have them also respond with the sound that goes with
each letter. Ask students if they have ever encountered bugs before.
Talk about their experiences while handing out the different colored
bugs to place in their lap. Students will be asked what insect they are
holding, students should respond with Bug! With this, teacher will ask
students what vowel is in the word bug as well as the sound that
connects with the vowel.
B. Transition

Teacher will hand out poem, Bugs! Bugs! (A Pizza the Size of the
Sun)Teacher will ask students to find the word bug on their poem and
point to it with their finger. This time we will stretch out the word
bug emphasizing the short vowel u.
C. Main lesson
5-8 min.
Teacher will read poem to students while pointing to each word.
Students will be asked to follow along as teacher reads the poem.
After reading the poem, Teacher will ask students what it was about.
Checking student awareness through the poem as well as
comprehension skills.
1. What are some of the actions the boy/girl does with the
bugs? (Kiss them, put them on his/her head, in pockets ect.)
2. What kind of bugs does the boy/girl talk about (colors,
shapes ect.)
5 min
Teacher will read poem again with students while they actively listen
and circle the short vowel sounds they hear in each word/poem. Then
have students tell the teacher the words they found in their poem
while writing them on a poster board for students to recognize the
sound with the letter. Each time have the students repeat the vowel
sound after the word. Example, teacher says "bug" students respond
(short sound) /u/.
3 min.
Teacher and students read the poem together each time holding up
their colored bug when they hear a short "u" sound.
3-4 min.
Writing activity- have students work in pairs and come up with words
that have short vowel sounds. See if they can write their own poem
about bugs in journals. Students may only have to write 5-4 lines.
Have students read their poems to another set of students and have
partners pick out the short vowel sounds in the new poems.

away in container and journals in proper area.

Bugs! Bugs!
Bugs! Bugs!
I love bugs,
yes I truly do,
great big pink ones,
yellow bugs and blue.
I put you in my pockets,
and I wear you in my hair.
You are my close companions,
I take you everywhere.
Bugs! Bugs!
I love bugs,
any shape or size,
thin ones, fat ones,
long ones, flat ones,
bugs with bulging eyes.
I hug you and I kiss you
and I bounce you on my knee.
No matter what I'm doing,
my bugs are close to me.
Bugs! Bugs!
I love bugs,
bugs you are my friends,
square ones, round ones,
half a pound ones,
bugs with big rear ends.
I love to watch you scamper,
and I love to watch you chew.
I've got no doubt about itbugs, I'm bugs for you!
