docklines - spring 2009 The newsletter of half moon bay marina www.hmbmarina.co.nz Opening marks new era The first new building in the re-development of the Marina’s ‘retail’ precinct is now open. The ‘Compass’ building on Ara Tai Drive is now home to a variety of tenants whose products and services have a distinctly lifestyle flavour. These range from a gymnasium, beauty spa and kids care to medical specialists, a pharmacy and physiotherapist, plus restaurant and real estate – all are contributing to a new buzz of activity in the area. The doors were opened a couple of weeks ago as finishing touches were being made, signs going up and contractors cleaned up. we tell you more about the new people and their businesses in ‘Compass’, show you exactly where they are located – and invite you to call in and look around. Getting this building finished is a milestone in the grand plan to revitalize the ‘shopping centre’ area of the Marina. The way this first project has been received and is operating in times of economic ‘difficulty’, bodes well for the work to come. Plans are well advanced for stage two, the marine services building, which is 90% leased. Tenancies already arranged include new Burnsco and Top Catch stores and the Marina Brokerage. Seabed fees no more! We did it! An extremely satisfying result. And thanks to all those who played a part. The story of how the Auckland Regional Council will phase out seabed fees at Half Moon Bay and other marinas has been well publicized in Auckland newspapers and marine magazines but since Docklines has been ‘on the case’ for a year or more we wanted to bring you our conclusion too. Thanks to (now) HMBM Berth Owners Association President Geoff Burgess who spearheaded the cause, first with his personal assault direct to the council, on the inequity of the situation, and then, together with berth-holders and the assistance and support of Marina management, led the charge with his petition. Remember – 1326 signatures! The fees get phased out over four years. Eventually that’s a reduction in cost to us all of nearly $200,000 annually. As Geoff has said already – ‘Great news – well done everyone’. Hear, hear! New Building Lifestyle, health and beauty theme at COMPASS You feel better just reading the list of tenants in the new Compass building! Their services have a decided uplifting feel. Start with a new home – Ray White can do that. Tone up a bit at Marina Fitness. After that, enjoy a relaxing spa at Gaia. Now you can indulge in an exotic dinner at Gouemons Japanese restaurant but not before you have kept your hair appointment at Marina Salon. Then there’s an abundance of services to keep you well in the Marina Medical Rooms. Services range from GP’s to physios to specialists in many areas including plastic surgery. It’s an interesting line-up and one that probably reflects the growing demands from the style of the local residential environment and the development of Half Moon Bay as a marine commuter centre for the South-Eastern area. The ferries and their passengers have been a major factor in the commercial appeal of the new building. An interesting feature for a two-level building is a lift. With the medical people and their rooms, including an operating room, on the second level, a lift was essential and a valuable aid for older and disabled patients. Second level tenants not only have views over the marina but access to a deck which should be an enjoyable feature in warmer weather. As we go to print the architectural ‘sails’ that give the building it’s distinctive marine feel and provide cover over main entrances are still to be installed. These will decorate Compass and will be a feature on future developments in this retail property area of the Marina. Who’s Where in COMPASS Who’s Who in COMPASS Marina Medical Moving from the existing Shopping Centre into spacious premises on the second level of Compass has given Marina Medical Rooms outstanding new facilities for their patients.
