Post pictures of great smiles of favorite role models in the bathroom. • Give kids the freedom to make decisions. Let them choose their favorite toothbrush, a cool toothpaste, and type of floss. Then keep the bathroom stocked. • Proper brushing takes at least two minutes — that’s right, 120 seconds! To get a feel for the time involved, try using a stopwatch. • Studies show that if your child uses a color-changing brush, he or she will brush an average of 91 seconds. When using a standard toothbrush, your child will brush an average of 58 seconds. • To properly brush your teeth, use short, gentle strokes, paying extra attention to the gum line, hard-toreach back teeth and areas around fillings, crowns or other restoration. Concentrate on thoroughly cleaning each section as follows: 0 Clean the outer surfaces of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth. 0 Clean the inner surfaces of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth 0 Clean the chewing surfaces • For fresher breath, be sure to brush your tongue, too • Brushing, flossing and rinsing are all rhythmic activities. Play music to help kids enjoy oral care. Together these activities last the length of a typical song. • Periodontal disease can run in families. It can pass from parents to children and between couples. Studies suggest that bacteria that cause the disease can pass through saliva. 11
