MUMBAI: Investors chose
to sit tight on Wednesday
as the Sensex remained in
the bearish territory for the
second day, dropping further by 98 points, and anxiety concerning state Assembly results and a probable Fed rate hike grew.
Exit poll numbers will
start trickling in Thursday
and the final results are due
Saturday. There are also
some concerns that the US
Federal Reserve may raise
borrowing costs next week
if the economy continues to
shape up. The BSE Sensex
hit a low of 28,815.48 before
settling at 28,901.94, down
97.62 points, or 0.34 per
cent. The NSE Nifty closed
lower by 22.60 points, or 0.25
per cent at 8,924.30. "Market continued its consolidation path due to the growing caution on Assembly
election results and Fed rate
hike which navigated investors to stay on the sidelines... as the market is

said Vinod Nair, Head of
Research, Geojit Financial
Services. Tata Steel suffered
the most by diving 1.89 per
cent, followed by ONGC 1.78
per cent. Infosys, GAIL,
RIL, M&M, Coal India and
Tata Motors also fell.
On the contrary, SBI,
TCS, PowerGrid, Cipla,
HDFC Bank and Sun Pharma
ended higher. MTNL today
soared 16.04 per cent following reports of a renewed
discussion of its merger with
BSNL. Metal suffered maximum losses, down 1.91 per
cent, followed by realty, oil
and gas and PSU. Mid-cap
and small-cap indices fell
0.56 per cent and 0.31 per
cent, respectively, on sustained selling pressure from
retail investors.
European markets were
mixed after German data
showed that industrial pro-
duction grew 2.8 per cent in
January. Going ahead, investors waited for Britain's
budget. Asia threw up a
similar trend.
Japanese stocks led the
regional decline, but Hong
Kong's Hang Seng rose.
Foreign funds bought
shares net worth Rs 920.46
crore yesterday, as per provisional figures.
The market breadth remained negative as 1,755
stocks ended lower, 1,067
closed higher while 164
ruled steady. The total
turnover on BSE stood at Rs
5,833.50 crore, up from Rs
2,932.97 crore on the previous day.
"Despite witnessing significant losses in mid-afternoon trade, benchmark indices managed to recoup
some lost ground to close
the day with losses," said

Bournemouth defender
Mings banned for 5 matches
LONDON: Bournemouth defender Tyrone Mings will
serve a five-match ban for violent conduct against Manchester United last weekend, the FA said on Wednesday. The suspension followed an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing. Mings and Manchester United
forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic were both charged after a
clash in Saturday's 1-1 Premier League draw at Old Trafford. Ibrahimovic accepted the charge and was handed
a three match ban on Tuesday, ruling him out of United's FA Cup quarter-final at league leaders Chelsea on
Monday. (Reuters)

THE SHILLONG TIMES, SHILLONG, THURSDAY, MARCH 9, 2017
MANCHESTER: Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola feels English footballers are too expensive. "I would
like to have English players, believe me, but they are so
expensive," the Spaniard was quoted as saying by BBC
on Tuesday. "I would like to play with English players.
When I was in Barcelona I liked to play with locals because they feel something special, but sometimes it is
not possible." The five England players in City's firstteam squad are John Stones, Raheem Sterling, Fabian
Delph, 19-year-old defender Tosin Adarabioyo and reserve goalkeeper Angus Gunn. Stones made City poorer
by 47.5 million pounds (around $57 million) when they
signed him from Everton in August and he is one of the
five English players in City's squad. "That is why the
club has worked for a long period with the academy,
thinking about the next years," he said. (IANS)
Hockey: India complete
5-0 whitewash of Belarus
BHOPAL: The Indian women's hockey team completed
a 5-0 whitewash of Belarus after clinching the fifth and
final tie 3-1 here on Wednesday. Captained by striker
Rani Rampal, the Indian women were quick to get off the
mark as Vandana Katariya scored a stunning field goal
in the sixth minute of the match. The first quarter went
on to be an eventful one for the hosts, as Gurjit Kaur
successfully converted a penalty corner in the 15th
minute to take her side 2-0 up against Belarus. (IANS)
Indian team has character
to make impact: U-17 coach
MARGAO: India's U-17 World Cup coach Luis Norton
de Matos says the team has the "character" to make an
impact in the FIFA tournament, scheduled to be held in
the country later this year, if it adopts his philosophy.
The tournament is to be held across six venues from
October 6 to 28. Portuguese De Matos, whose great
grandfather had lived in Goa, arrived here last Saturday
and got onto the field for his first training session on
Monday. (PTI)
Formula One: Bottas streaks
clear as testing times drop
BARCELONA: Flying Finn Valtteri Bottas left the competition trailing in his wake when setting the fastest time
yet in 2017 pre-season testing on Wednesday morning
in Barcelona. Bottas bettered his previous best time from
last week by nearly four tenths of a second in 1min 19.310
as defending champions Mercedes had meanwhile reasserted their dominance at the top of the timesheets.
Felipe Massa was surprisingly fastest for Williams on
Tuesday, and the Brazilian posted another promising
time just over a tenth of a second slower than Bottas in
second fastest. Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen was nearly a
second back in third, but on slower soft tyres compared
to the supersoft and ultrasoft compounds used by Bottas and Massa respectively. (AFP)
NAPLES: Captain Sergio
Ramos and Alvaro Morata
struck one apiece as 11-time
winners Real Madrid secured a seventh successive
Champions League quarter-final berth with a clinical 3-1 win over Napoli on
Tuesday. Real, who took a
commanding 3-1 first leg
lead at the Santiago Bernabeu last month, looked to
be facing a tough night in
Naples after Dries Mertens
finished off a great attacking move to give the hosts
a 24th minute lead.
But Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri had warned of the
threat from the "world's
richest club, with the best
players" a day earlier.
And Zinedine Zidane's
'Galacticos' emerged from
the half-time interval in far
more clinical fashion.
Ramos rose to head Real
level six minutes after the
restart and a second header
which
deflected
off
Mertens at Pepe Reina's
near post gave the Spaniards a 2-1 lead by the 57th
minute.
Napoli saw late claims for
a penalty waved away
when Mertens tumbled in
the box and suffered more
woe in the first minute of
added-on time when ex-Juventus striker Alvaro
Morata came off the bench
to hit their third for a 6-2 aggregate score.
Napoli required nothing
short of a miracle if they
were to reach the last eight
for the first time -- although
a bright opening reflected a
growing belief in the football-mad southern city the
Azzurri could cause an upset.
Maurizio Sarri's men had
11 shots in the opening period, the most Real had
seen in a Champions
League game since facing
15 against Juventus in 2013.
Mertens's deflected shot
flew over the bar for a corner after Amadou Diawara's
inch-perfect pass early on.
But Napoli saw captain
Marek Hamsik, Lorenzo Insigne and Mertens fail to
beat Keylor Navas in the
Real net before the Belgium
midfielder sent the stadium
into raptures.
On Real's first real foray,
Luka Modric outmanoeuvred Kalidou Koulibaly to
deliver a back-post cross
that Reina collected after a
mix-up between Ronaldo
and Karim Benzema.
Insigne, who caught out
Real with a long-range drive
in Madrid, came close to
another long-distance goal
with a dipping shot from 35
yards that forced Navas
down low at his near post.
Gareth Bale escaped
down the right to deliver a
cross that Kroos, from the
edge of the area, volleyed
straight at Reina. But Real
were left ball-watching on
24 minutes after a slick passing move between Hamsik
and Mertens that saw the

badly in the doubles competitions. In the men's doubles category, Manu Attri
and B. Sumeeth Reddy suffered a first-round exit at the
hands of qualifiers Peter
Briggs and Tom Wolfenden,
who won 21-19, 10-21, 21-18
in 47 minutes.
There was also a huge
upset in this category, with
Danish second seeds
Mathias Boe and Carsten

by Lu Kai and Zheng Siwei
of China.
The women's doubles

after the restart, Toni
Kroos's dangerous cross to
the back post was cleared
by the head of Mertens.
But danger of Hamsik's
error became apparent
when Ramos rose to meet
Kroos's corner to stretch
the back of the Napoli net.
After Allan was cautioned
for a challenge that left
Casemiro writhing in pain,
the Brazilian was replaced
by Marko Rog.

dium.
But any hopes Wenger's
recent problems would be
erased in historic fashion
were brutally dashed by
Robert Lewandowski's second half penalty and Laurent Koscielny's dismissal
for conceding that spotkick.
Wenger cut a forlorn figure as Arjen Robben and
Douglas Costa netted before Arturo Vidal's double
fired Bayern into the quarter-finals with a 10-2 aggregate victory.
It was the first time Arse-
nal had conceded five at the
Emirates and by the closing
stages, there was a funereal
atmosphere on an evening
that started with Arsenal
fans staging a protest march
calling for Wenger to quit
and ended with a chorus of
boos and banners held up
proclaiming: "Enough is
enough - Wenger out".
It was yet another chastening experience in the
Champions League for
Wenger, who has now seen
Arsenal eliminated in the
last 16 for seven successive
seasons.
Proposed franchise-based
T20 league in SA
sparks interest in India
JOHANNESBURG: Cricket
South Africa (CSA) received
35 percent expressions of interest from India, second
only after the hosts, to be
part of the franchise-based
South African T20 Global
Destination League.
In a statement issued on
Wednesday, it was claimed
that more than 150 expressions of interest were received by the time Friday's
deadline expired, according
to a release from CSA.
While there was significant interest shown from the
UK, the United States and
the United Arab Emirates,
the majority of the interest
emanated from South Africa with 39 percent and India with 35 percent of expressions of interest received.
"We are very encouraged by the extent of the
interest shown by potential team owners from
South Africa and the rest
of the world," said CSA
chief Haroon Lorgat.
"We will now progress
to the next stage where we
will receive proposals to a
tender from potential owners and then narrow down
our search to a shortlist
and decide the eight team
owners." (IANS)
Smit, Assam Rifles romp to victory
Umsning, Lawmali scrape through in Assam Rifles Invitational Cup
SHILLONG: Assam Rifles
Laitkor romped to a 10-1 victory over Mawkhar SC on
the second day of the Assam Rifles Invitational
Football Cup in Shillong on
Wednesday. Mani Chetry
ran riot as he scored five
goals to give Assam Rifles
a massive win.
In other matches of the
day Smit SC defeated Nongkrem SC 6-0 at the Assam
Rifles ground in Happy Valley, while Nongrim Hills SC
and Umsning SC finished
on two goals each at the end
of regulation time.
Umsning then held their
nerves in the shootout,
claiming the match 3-2 on
penalties.
Meanwhile, Lawmali SC
got the better of Nongthymmai SC as they won 1-0.
The lone goal scored was
by Kynsailang Khongsit in
the 67th minute.
The fixture that followed
on, however, was completely different.
Chetry scored his goals
in the 7th 37th, 45th, 59th and
88th minutes as Assam Rifles created gaps in a rusty
Mawkhar defensive line.
His team mates S Haokip
(22nd, 75th) and Arun Sunar
(65 th , 84 th ) contributed a
brace each. Thring Bhutia
scored the other goal in the
5th minute.
Gabriel Blah went close

to be his last as speculation grows that he will terminate his 21-year reign at

Injured Serena
out of Indian
Wells, Miami
LOS ANGELES: World
number one Serena Williams
has pulled out of upcoming
WTA tournaments at Indian
Wells and Miami because of
a knee injury, organisers
said on Tuesday.
A statement issued by
BNP Paribas Open organisers in California quoted Williams as saying she was
withdrawing because of a
problem with her left knee.
"Sadly, I have to withdraw from the BNP Paribas
Open in Indian Wells and the
Miami Open," Williams said.
"I have not been able to
train due to my knees and
am disappointed I cannot be
there. I will keep moving forward and continue to be
positive. I look forward to
being back as soon as I
can." Organisers of this
week's event in Indian
Wells, which gets under
way on Friday, said a revised draw would be issued.
Williams's withdrawal
means Germany's world
number two Angelique Kerber will take over the world
number one ranking at the
conclusion of the BNP Paribas Open, which ends on
March 19.
Williams, 35, has not
played since defeating sister Venus in the final of the
Australian Open in January
to clinch a record 23rd
Grand Slam singles title.
The American star finished runner-up in the Indian Wells final last year, a
tournament she only started
playing again in 2015 after a
13-year boycott.
Williams has long been a
staple at the Miami Open,
winning the tournament a
record eight times with her
most recent victory coming
in 2015. This year's tournament runs from March 21 to
April 2. (AFP)
PCB wants Misbah to retire after Windies tour India to face England
KARACHI: The chairman
of the Pakistan Cricket
Board (PCB) Shahryar Khan
has conveyed to Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq that the
board wants him to retire
after the tour to the West
Indies in March-April.
Shahryar retained Misbah as captain for the threeTest series on the West Indies tour after the senior
batsman informed the PCB
that he wanted to carry on
playing for Pakistan.
"I have spoken to Misbah and discussed his future. I told him he needs to
decide his future. He said he
will come back to me after
reviewing his form and performance in the PSL. He
contracted me last week and
told me he was available so
I have retained him as captain," Shahryar said.
"But at the same time it is
a fact that during the tour,
he will turn 43 and I don't
see him continuing to play
on after the tour," he added.
Shahryar, 82, asked Misbah to consider his future
with the Pakistan team after
the national team's straight
Test losses in New Zealand
and Australia this winter.
The PCB chief said he
had decided to retain Misbah as captain for the West
Indies tour keeping in mind
his services to Pakistan
cricket and also since he
wanted to end his career on
a high.
Shahryar was the only
key official of the Pakistan
cricket think-tank that in-
cluded chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq, head coach
Mickey Arthur and other
senior officials to cast his
vote in favour of retaining
Misbah for the upcoming
tour.
"It is strange but the PCB
chief said since he had a
commitment with Misbah he
will continue for the tour," a
source said.
Shahryar also said that
people should not harbour
high hopes of international
cricket returning to Pakistan
soon because of the successful hosting of the PSL
final in Lahore.
"The PSL final went
smoothly but it is just a
small step towards the eventual return of international
cricket to Pakistan. It will
take time and we are at the
moment doing our best to
get the Asian Test teams to
come to Pakistan.
"The positive is that by
holding the PSL final
smoothly we showed eve-
ryone that we are capable of
providing the best security
for visiting teams. But I still
think we can't expect things
to turn around after just one
match and it will take time,"
said Shahryar. (PTI)
