Words from the Next Baroness
Greetings Might Oakwood,
I would like to say it has been a busy month preparing for Steppes Warlord,
and all of that hard work has paid off. Thanks to everyone in the Barony the
event was a huge
success! When you see Ld. Alaine please give him a pat on the back. Warlord
is a Mighty event to try and autocrat by one’s self, and even MIGHTIER when it
is the first
event you have ever autocrated! Warlord was a great example of how this
Steppes takes care of its people.
Everywhere I looked there were Steppers, Glaslyners, and Kyngescrekens at
the load-out, hanging banners in the Hall, setting up the list field, helping take
down the list field, helping campers pack up in the rain (Rain that waited till
after closing court.), and helping to put stuff back in storage. Big thanks all
around to everyone.

Congratulations are also in order for all of the new champions of the Steppes!
June brings us all around the known World for events. We have Kings College
and 50 th year. Both promise to be great learning experiences for those of all
skill levels. If you can make it to 50 th year, please help support our Majesties
in showing the Known World how great Ansteorra is and bring back some good
tales for the fire. (Ill-gotten loot for the local coffers also kindly accepted.)
In closing, it will start heating up here in the south, so hydrate before, during
and after events. Take care of yourselves and each other as you travel.

Da'ud Bob Movie Review:
In the Name of the King 3: The Last Mission.
Words from the Next Baroness
At first blush, I was afraid that this third installment in a series of movies was simply
going to be a remake of its predecessor. To show you what I mean, here's the synopsis of part two: "An ex‐Special Forces soldier gets thrown back to medieval times to
fulfill an ancient prophecy and ends up finding redemption for his own battlefield
experiences." And here's a synopsis of the third movie in the series: "A modern‐day
assassin is thrown back to the Middle Ages to bring order back to a kingdom in chaos
and finds redemption for his own misdeeds." But upon a closer reading, I can see
that these two movies are entirely different. One is about a former Special Forces soldier, while the other is centered around a hit man. Totally different, right? The fact that the vast
bulk of each movie is about the middle ages, kingdoms in peril, women with swords, armies in conflict, and fire‐breathing dragons doesn't make them the same. Not at all. Oh, yeah, and the modern‐day settings in each are in different places. So you can see that my initial fears were totally
unfounded, and that these are two entirely different movies. And so it is that this month, Da'ud
Bob reviews for you the third, but completely different, movie in this series of films, In the Name of
the King 3: The Last Mission.
Starring Dominic Purcell (rather than Dolph Lundgren in the last one, so again, totally different!)
as Hazen Kaine, Ralitsa Paskaleva as Arabella, Daria Simeonova as Emeline, Petra Gocheva as Sophie, Bashar Rahal as Ulrich, Nikolai Sotirov as Tybalt, Tsvotoluyb Itiev as Alekandar, Marina Dakova as Alys, and Marian Valev as Tervin, we've already covered the basics of the plot in the first
paragraph. There's other stuff involved, of course, some of which leaves unanswered questions by
the end. For example, who's going to deal with the dragon now flying above modern‐day Sofia,
Bulgaria? Why did one of the two kidnapped daughters have the magic amulet which matched our
erstwhile hero's tattoo and which opened the portal which took him back into the middle ages?
There are other loose ends and plot holes, but those are the two biggest questions that came to my
mind. Also, why does a professional assassin leave bodies lying about hotel corridors without regard to their being found at any moment by anyone? Three! Three biggest questions. And why is he
so cavalier about leaving his fingerprints everywhere while making a hit on someone? Four!
Among our biggest questions are ....
Good points: It's only 85 minutes long. The landscapes. (It was filmed in Bulgaria, which is a very
pretty country.) The banners at the castle. The better than usual CGI dragon. (Well, technically it's
a Continental dragon, what in the British Isles would be called a wyvern. How can you tell the difference? To quote from a poster someone put up on Facebook a little while back: Has four legs plus
wings, is a dragon. Has two legs plus wings, is a wyvern. Has two legs, two arms, plus wings and an
attitude, is the Batman!)
Bad points: The hero is suddenly an able swordsman, despite never training with a sword. The
magical amulet, which also seems to work as a remote control of the dragon. The woods battle.
(The action close to the camera was generally okay, but if you watch what's going on in the background, it ain't pretty.)
Zero breasts. Four gallons of blood. 86 dead bodies. Pistol fu. Sword fu. Arrow fu. Ax fu. Dragon
fire fu. Fisticuffs. Dagger fu. Drowning fu. Kung fu. Waves roll. Hazen rolls. Fighters roll. Gratuitous kidnapping. Gratuitous magic portals. Gratuitous swearing and cursing. Gratuitous yellow
python. (I don't think these are native to Bulgaria.) Gratuitous kissy face. An 87 on the Vomit Meter. Two stars. Da'ud Bob says, "I hope the subtitle is accurate, and that this is, indeed, 'the last
mission.' Check it out!"

Recipe of the month:
Armored Turnips
Greetings to all, in the name of good food.
I have been asked to regale you with some of my favorite dishes from history. I will begin my tour in 15 th Century Italy
with a recipe graced us by a gentleman commonly known as Platina. His given name is Bartolomeo de Sacchi di Piadena. The cookbook is titled ‘De honesta Voluptate-An Honest Indulgence’
One of the simpler recipes that he gives is called Armored Turnips. It is a precursor to Scalloped Potatoes. It is a great
potluck dish and not difficult at all.
Armored Turnips
Those who have a fortified gullet are pleased to call turnips armored when they have been rolled in cheese, covered, as
it were, with breastplate and cuirass, as if their decent into the lower regions would not seem save without arms. But
what good does this protection do the turnips, since it turns against them to their total ruin, since the very strong gluttons in the cook shops of athletes prefer their enemy armored and eat them, defenseless as they are.
Cut up turnips that have been either boiled or cooked under the ashes. Likewise to the same with rich cheese, not too
ripe. These should be smaller morsels than the turnips though. In a pan greased with butter or liquamen, make a layer
of cheese first, then a layer of turnips, and so on, all the while pouring in spice and some butter, from time to time.
This dish is quickly cooked and should be eaten quickly too. But since it is ruinous, it should be served to Dometianus,
who is very greedy.
My interpretation.
Ingredients:
Three or four turnips
1 Lb mixed soft Italian cheeses (Pizza Blend works well)
3 Tbsp Italian Spice Mix
1 Stick of Butter at room temperature
Preheat your oven to 300 degrees.
Peel and boil the turnips. When they are soft, drain them and let them cool.
While they are cooling place the shredded cheese in a bowl with the spices and room temperature butter and cream
them together.
When the turnips are cool enough to handle, slice them to quarter inch thick slices.
Take a casserole pan and wipe it down with butter. Place a layer of turnips in it, then a layer of the butter/cheese/herb
mix. Repeat this until the pan is full. Place the full pan in the preheated oven and bake for around 45 minutes (time will
vary based on the thickness of the casserole). When the dish is well warmed and the cheese melted it is ready to serve.
As with all dishes of this type the quantity of spiced can be increased or decreased to your taste. You can also play with
other cheeses for variety. Let me know how you enjoy this dish. Tell me next time you see me.
In Service to all,

Chronicles of the Steppes:
My notes from Warlord
Words from the Next Baroness
I have an idea. On board! Who is with me?
Last weekend, my lady Safiya and myself enjoyed our first complete Warlord. We went last year but only for the day
so I prefer to count it out. The experience was a ride of fun from the beginning to the epic final, with rain pouring
down since just after court finished and until we were soaked and our car was loaded with wet belongings, stopping
as soon as it came.
Maybe it does not sound so impressive for the majority of the members of our Barony, but for me it was a huge deal.
Camping is fun, camping with friends and planning coordinated camping is even funnier. To do it for Warlord was
great. A lot of ideas came from this experience which let us live a very small part of the game that we knew but never
experienced before joining the SCA: households. I had curiosity over how the household system works, but the explanation offers only a part of the whole picture. To me, the best analogy at this point is a museum as a place where you
can experience art, not only read about it. It is a very important part into involving the newer members because it
helps to create deeper layers of companionship.
I know that the majority of people involved in our Barony have more experiences with… basically anything related to
the SCA. But my point is that we should encourage this type of association. Maybe not necessarily households but we
could encourage guilds, groups related by place and time or maybe by common interests. We had met wonderful
people every time we go to an event, and at this point we are very happy to say that is not anymore only from the
Barony or from Ansteorra. I had the pleasure to talk with her Majesty Lorelei, Queen of Gleann Abhann, in Don Domingo’s (Sorry, but at this point his kitchen tent is my favorite tavern in the northern hemisphere, so in my head is
called that way). I learned about her kingdom, and obviously the night was filled with old stories. I remember saying
to her Excellency, our dear Baroness Ekaterina, about that I was actually happy of the rain, because now I can say that
I had my own little piece of Warlord history. Today, I feel more attached to the SCA, the Kingdom of Ansteorra and to
the Barony of the Steppes because I had to dry out our tent floor with a towel and a mope a week after. It is fun how
the connections are made in our mind.
People who stays attached a long time to a group as the SCA creates bonds and make memories. That is very good
and very nice, unless you have nothing to say and the only thing you can do is hear. I think the experience of being
“the new person” in a group is very common. I guess that is something most of us had experienced at least once in
our life: to be the “new hiring” in a job, or the “new date” in a family reunion. Don’t get me wrong, our Barony is
charming and inclusive, and very nice. It is not about the Barony, is about to be new and how we sometimes, when
we have so much time in one place, we forget that in the end, the affective, and emotional part are keystones creating bonds to a group.
We need to encourage guilds, households and other types of groups related by interest because is not how we make
new members but how we keep the not so new when the surprise factor of the banners, and the titles and the “there
is always a new thing” factor fades away. This is how good ideas became doable, and amazing projects keep going on.

Greetings Good People of The Steppes,
Though we were tested by rain and hail in May, the Steppes Archers prevailed. We not only made it through practices but thrived! The Bowyers
and Fletchers guild worked hard to repair our equipment for the battle at
Warlord. Lucy the Vile and her hordes of Undead attacked our merry gathering at Warlord! 28 Archers from across the Realm joined together to
protect the populace. She was defeated and her Bear (Totem of Destruction) was destroyed! We look forward to the month of June and based on
our current numbers expect each practice to draw more than the last.

May = Warlord in the Steppes. That means tournaments, lots of tournaments! And two of Steppes own came home winners! Matthias of Kirkwall

Another big thank you to HL Emma Haldan for nailbound rapier mask ties - in

Words From the Rapier
Marshal
Greetings to The Steppes,
So who in all of Ansteorra holds the record for the most times winning the
title of Queen’s Champion? If you said His Grace Don Miguel Sebastian de
Oporto with a total of seven wins (so far) you are correct. If you guessed
someone not of the Steppes, you chose poorly.
Congratulations, Don Miguel on a hard-fought, honorable and entertaining
win. If you guessed Don Brendan McEwen you would have been close as he
has won this tournament five times, the second most wins.
Come to Steppes rapier practice on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 and learn from
Don Miguel and Don Brendan, two of the very best rapier fighters in the
knowne world.

Loaner gear is available for new people. (Guys will need to provide their own

more gorgets in our loaner gear so if you want to donate that old one you
don’t use anymore it would be appreciated.
Practice will continue to be held indoors at T.C. Marsh Middle School located
at 3838 Crown Shore Dr., Dallas, TX 75244 until further notice. Use the lot
on Cox Ln. and find us in the cafeteria or the gym. As it stands, we believe this

The Enclave of Artisans at Warlord was a hit. We had so many activities going that
there was something for everyone. Mistress Asiya, who was responsible for starting
this all in the beginning was host for a wonderful meet and greet with the Laurels. It
was very informative. We had a room that made Viking 6-board boxes, another room
where plates were painted, a talk on the history of pottery, tile painting, how to photograph your projects, Charter painting, a Salon discussion about Largesse, a discussion
and demonstration on how to encourage the cooking of Period food, a Salon discussion
on the Sable Swap, discussions on Middle Eastern head gear and Moroccan cookery,
another on Nalbinding research resources, a discussion on recreating Middle Eastern
material culture, and for the first time Children's Activities were included with the Enclave.
We've already started planning on the next Enclave and hope to enlarge it. Plans have
also started to greatly enlarge the Children's Activities and add classes for many different ages.
All in all the Arts and Sciences are really booming!!
Sincerely,
Johanna Jakobsdottir

Warlord was fantastic, and I hope everyone had a
great time. I really enjoyed heralding my first Warlord as Steppes Herald. Thank you all for your support. Also a special thanks to everyone that came out
for loading and unloading of the trailers from the
storage shed to the site and back again. It was a tremendous group effort to be proud of! The teamwork
made for a quick and easy completion of the job.
Thank you all!!!!

I know there are some, perhaps many of you, that
have names or devices you wish to submit. Each submission will require a check for $8 to the Barony, and
in turn the Barony will write a check for $7 to the
Kingdom. If you do not see me at an event to submit
your paperwork and check, you can contact my by
email at [email protected] and I will give
you instructions for sending everything to be by mail.
Or if you prefer, you can also meet me at the monthly
business meeting on the 3rd Thursday of each month.
If you need help with a name or device please send
me an email and I will do my best to help you, or put
you in touch with someone that has the knowledge to
do so.

Greetings Steppes,
It has been another great month for the Steppes! The bank account stands at $18012.43 prior
to Warlord. At the May Business Meeting, the present populace voted in two new members of
the financial committee, His Excellency Sir Domingo de la Vega and Honorable Lady Sarah
Fynn. Congratulations to them, and to the Steppes, as I know they will serve us well! We are
closing the positions of At-Large members on the Financial Committee at this time.
Also, remember that the Steppes is still on the look-out for a place to store our new trailer and
have a storage unit at the same site. We appreciate any help you might provide in this, and
please send any possibilities to our Quartermaster, Lord Dragos.

Canton of Glaslyn
Words from the Next Baroness
Greetings Glaslyn!
Was that an amazing Warlord event! I can proudly say that Glaslyn was a busy as a beehive at this event. Security,
Gate, Entourage, helping people carry and setup. You name it, I think I saw a Glaslyn member there. Makes me burst
with pride in the willingness of our people to work. It goes to our motto,
"Glaslyn makes it Work".
As the spring tourney season winds down the heat of summer is upon us. Remember to drink lots of water! I don't like paperwork! It's also a great time to
get busy on those A&S projects as Steppes and Glaslyn Artisan are right around
the corner! I know I have several things planned to do while it's too hot to play
outside.
We are hosting Round Table in July at TWU's student union. Check in with me if
you can help with set up, etc.

Mistress Maggie has been busy creating and sewing an entire wardrobe for Gulf Wars.

Our last A&S meeting was very good, led by Mistress Honor and was all about getting
