Well our major event on the RSA calendar is only a couple of days away, are you ready for it? The behind the scenes work is continuing so that it all comes to fruition on Tuesday morning and runs like clockwork, thanks to a hard working crew. I would like to pass on a “Special Thank You” to the following people who have worked tirelessly over the last 3 – 4 months on preparations, firstly for the “Poppy Day” collection and secondly the “ANZAC Dawn Service” and ANZAC Day itself. They are Ian Salter, Colleen Towgood, Pam Chestnut and Cushla Rattray. Thank you all. The timetables of events and times are on the noticeboard and have appeared in the local newspapers as well. Please check those times. This Sunday the 23rd April we will have a group of motorcyclists arrive at our Clubrooms. They are participating in the New Zealand wide ‘Ride of Respect’ in recognition of those New Zealanders who have fallen in conflicts around the world. They will assemble at the Waipu RSA at 0900hrs for departure & ride around the district. Their final destination will be the Whangarei RSA Clubrooms where they will be welcomed by myself and as many members of this RSA that can make it. No excuses please show your support for these riders and for the reason that they are riding. They are due to arrive at 1100hrs. There will be a Coffee Van here with hot drinks and the District Cadets are providing a BBQ of hot sausages to fill your tummy. On Wednesday evening at about 2300hrs our Hot Water system that supplies the Toilets, Kitchen and Bar, sprung a major leak that flooded the area above the Cool room and the Cool room itself. So unfortunately on Thursday and Friday morning we will not have any hot running water. If there are any complaints then we will have to shut the doors until a new hot water cylinder is installed. This is planned for Friday morning. Be thankful it did not happen Monday night, the evening before ANZAC. Please can everyone pray for fine weather for the ANZAC Dawn Service and for the other ANZAC Services throughout Northland. See you all at 0530hrs on Rust Ave, ANZAC morning, with all the different contingents to assemble behind the appointed markers that will indicate your positions in the parade. The contingents are to assemble in a frontage of 6 ranks. Chris Harold President. CRANZAC BISCUITS ‘CRANZAC Biscuits’ are a very tasty Cranberry ANZAC biscuit on sale at the local New World Supermarket. The proceeds from the sale of these biscuits will be given to the Whangarei RSA Trust and the funds used to publish a book about our war dead and the Laurie Hall War Memorial. We encourage members, family and friends to purchase these biscuits in support of this endeavour. But the war went on and he had to stay, And all I could do was wait and pray. His letters told of the dreadful plight, (I can see it still in my dreams at night) With the tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire, and the mines and bullets, the bombs and fire. A boy came whistling down the street, Bouncing along on carefree feet, His smile was full of joy and fun: “Lady,” said he, “May I have one?” When she pinned it on he turned to say, “Why do we wear a poppy today?” Till at last, at last, the war was won – And that’s why we wear a poppy, son.” The small boy turned as if to go, Then said, “Thanks lady, I’m glad to know, That sure did sound like an awful fight, But your son – did he come back all right?” The lady smiled in her wistful way, And answered, “This is Remembrance Day, And the poppy there is a symbol for The gallant ones who died in war, And because they did, you and I are free, That’s why we wear the poppy, you see. A tear rolled down each faded cheek: She shook her head but didn’t speak. I slunk away in a sort of shame, And if you were me you’d have done the same: For our thanks, in giving, is oft delayed Though our freedom was bought And thousands paid. I had a boy about your size, With golden hair and big blue eyes. He loved to play and jump and shout, Free as a bird he would race about. As the years went by he learned and grew, And became a man – as you will, too. And so when we see a poppy worn, Let us reflect on the burden borne, By those who gave their very all, When asked to answer their country’s call. That we at home in peace might live. Then wear a poppy, remember and give. ‘RIDE OF RESPECT’ CONTACTS Line Dancing Darts Fishing Pool Rifle Women’s Section Donna Bryant Boot Herriott Warren Hastings Paula Detlaff Kevin Peachey Lorrayne McKay 437 3411 027 212 5608 438 8822 459 6226 435 2916 438 5686 MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY SUNDAY Apr 17 Apr 18 Open 11am – Closing Line Dancing Apr 19 Open 11am – Closing Apr 20 Open 11am – Closing Apr 21 Open 11am – Closing Apr 22 Open 11am – Closing Apr 23 Open 2pm – Closing Snowball $600.00 (if prior draw not struck) $1 Raffles / Door Prize Naval Association Meeting / Lunch Snowball $650.00 (if prior draw not struck) $2 Raffles / Door Prize Entertainment Annette & Kim POO DARTS L CLUB 2017 Open Pairs Club Champs 11:30am Cards 2:30pm EASTER MONDAY Rifle Club – 7:00pm Whareora Hall Darts Drawn Pairs Register by 7:15pm Pool Drawn Pairs Register by 7:15pm Bistro Closed Bistro Closed Bistro - Lunch & Dinner Bistro - Lunch & Dinner Bistro - Lunch & Dinner Bistro – Dinner Bistro Closed Apr 24 Open 1pm – Closing Apr 25 ANZAC DAY Apr 26 Open 11am – Closing Apr 27 Open 11am – Closing Apr 28 Open 11am – Closing Apr 29 Open 11am – Closing Snowball $650.00 (if prior draw not struck) $1 Raffles / Door Prize Air Force Association Meeting / Lunch Snowball $700.00 (if prior draw not struck) $2 Raffles / Door Prize Apr 30 Open 2pm – Closing Cards 2:30pm Darts Drawn Pairs Register by 7:15pm Pool Drawn Pairs Register by 7:15pm Entertainment Karaoke Night May 3 Open 11am – Closing May 4 Open 11am – Closing May 5 Open 11am – Closing 1:00 – 2:30pm Afternoon Session May 1 Open 1pm – Closing 1:00 – 2:30pm Afternoon Session May 2 Open 11am – Closing Line Dancing Rifle Club – 7:00pm Whareora Hall Snowball $700.00 (if prior draw not struck) $1 Raffles / Door Prize Darts Drawn Pairs Register by 7:15pm POOL CLUB TINOPAI AWAY TRIP May 6 Open 3pm – Closing Snowball $750.00 (if prior draw not struck) $2 Raffles / Door Prize Pool Drawn Pairs Register by 7:15pm Entertainment Number 8 Wire May 7 Open 12:00pm – Closing Cards 2:30pm Bistro Closed Bistro Closed Bistro - Lunch & Dinner Bistro - Lunch & Dinner Bistro - Lunch & Dinner Bistro - Dinner Bistro Closed May 8 Open 11am – Closing May 9 Open 11am – Closing May 10 Open 11am – Closing Women’s Section May 11 Open 11am – Closing May 12 Open 11am – Closing May 13 Open 11am – Closing May 14 Open 2pm – Closing 1:00 – 2:30pm Afternoon Session Bistro Closed Snowball $800.00 (if prior draw not struck) $2 Raffles / Door Prize Snowball $750.00 (if prior draw not struck) $1 Raffles / Door Prize Rifle Club – 7:00pm Whareora Hall Darts Drawn Pairs Register by 7:15pm Pool Drawn Pairs Register by 7:15pm Bistro - Lunch Bistro - Lunch & Dinner Bistro - Lunch & Dinner Cards 2:30pm Entertainment ‘Ramblers’ The Band Bistro - Lunch & Dinner Bistro - Dinner Bistro - Lunch PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS
