Luke 7:1-17 – The faith of the centurion and the widow of Nain
Questions and discussion points:
Observation:
Who are the main characters in these two stories and how do they differ?
4-5: Why do the Jewish leaders think that Jesus should help this man?
6-8: What was the centurion’s view of himself and of Jesus?
7: What was the key for the centurion to see his servant healed?
9-10: What is Jesus’ response to faith of this kind? (Compare Mark 6:4-6)
Interpretation:
How does our society/how do we differentiate between different people?
What is the significance of Galatians 3:26-29 to the availability of the gospel and
our response to others?
The centurion recognised Jesus’ authority. What does the bible have to say about
the authority of Jesus? (see Ephesians 1:19-23 / Colossians 1:15-20 / Matthew 28:18)
“But say the word and my servant will be healed”. How important is it to have the
word of God to activate faith in our life? What does it mean in our time to hear the
word of Christ? What is faith and what is presumption?
Application:
What practical things can we do to make sure that, like Jesus, we are not being a
respecter of persons?
What does it really mean to submit to the authority of Jesus in our life? In John’s
gospel, Jesus equated loving him to obeying his commands. How can we become
more obedient followers of Jesus Christ?
Consider Romans 10:17 and Colossians 3:16.
Word of Christ
Hearing
Faith
How can we let the word of Christ dwell in us richly? How can we teach and
admonish one another? What does it mean to “sing psalms and hymns and
spiritual songs with gratitude in your heart to God.”?
How can we see faith grow in our hearts and lives?
