FULL PODCAST TRANSCRIPT:
Back here in the VIP lounge for lesson number 18 feeling pretty good today Add,
more on the lighter side than our last week's topic on drugs. This one’s not about
drugs at all, another dialogue. Right a little bit lighter, and yeah we’re not…it’s
not business time right now, but it’s going to be a good time at least anyway. It’s
going to be an excellent time Add, let’s jump right into the dialogue as usual
before we get going on those terms.
A: What are you doing?
B: I'm whipping up a killer playlist for tonight's party.
A: You don't have the faintest clue how to make a party playlist.
B: Don't worry, it's not even remotely close to the last one.
A: What kind of tunes are you throwing on it?
B: It's a mix. I want you to be surprised.
A: Don't keep me in the dark about this. It's too big a party.
B: Well then, you make one too. If people don't like mine, you can throw on
yours.
A: Fair enough.
Alright, short dialogue Add but tons of juicy terms in there, tons. Exactly, a lot of
small but juicy ones as we like to say. Yeah, so I’m talking about, what am I
doing here Add’s asking me, and I'm saying that I'm whipping up a killer playlist,

and if I'm whipping up something it means you're making it rather quickly. So I
could say…quickly or easily really and I could say, mom’s just in the kitchen
whipping up a quick dinner, or I’m whipping up a snack for myself, yeah I’ll
often…you’ll hear it with food doing it quickly when you're in a hurry. Yeah, you
can do it with food. Yeah, that's the biggest one really, whipping up something in
the kitchen. When I'm in the kitchen, even if it should take a short time often it
takes a long time. I do it very slowly on things that should be whipped up. Right,
so Andrew might use it as a joke saying he's whipping up something when I know
that he's actually not. But here I said, a killer playlist, and if something is killer,
it’s a slang term and it means, really really good. Don't overuse this term. This is
not used all the time, you may hear it. You may want to use it…kind of maybe
three times a year. Here is an example. Those are some killer dance moves,
where did you learn to dance like that? It’s kind of a fun line; it’s a little bit oldfashioned, not too bad. Just don't overuse it. Right, some people overuse it so
just don't be caught being one of these types of people. Yeah, use it once a
night at most, probably less. I think three times a year is better to aim for there
but you might hear it. Right so you can keep that in your book if you have a
record for how many times you use killer. Yeah…and if you’re at the end of the
year, you might want to use it three times just to make sure that you get them all
in. Well, you want to space them out though Add. I know, I’m just joking. All right,
so I'm making a killer playlist, and playlist is just a list of songs period. It's just a
list of songs, but in this case it's a list of songs that I'm playing at the party.
iTunes allows you to do that, Windows media player, a lot of these software just
allows you to put many different songs from different bands altogether so that
you can just play at once, and the whole thing plays and you listen to many many
songs at once. Right, most computer music programs you can use a playlist on
and it's very easy to use. I would say pretty much all of them. Right, if they don't
have it, it must be from like the 1980s maybe. All right, the next one here is
faintest and this is a really really good one to…to know and…It’s not…it’s not
taught in school too often, but you will definitely hear it on TV and with your
friends, with native speakers or whoever. So the idea…the word is faintest and it
basically means slightest. And you can use it with idea and clue. So in the
dialogue Add said, you don't have the faintest clue how to make a party playlist.
Or another example is, you don’t have the faintest idea of what you're doing, and
it just means you don’t have the slightest idea. You don't have any idea at all so
it’s always in the negative. Like, you don't have the faintest clue about this, or
you don’t have the faintest idea about how to do something. It just means you
have no idea whatsoever how to do something. Right, you have no idea where
to start from even. You have no clue what to do. Next one here Add, we have
the phrase, not even remotely close and you'll often hear this in spoken English,
and it means not close at all or completely different. You might also hear, that's
not even remotely true. And that means it’s not even close to being true, it’s
completely wrong. So if you want to strengthen how wrong something is or how
not even close something is, you say it's not even remotely close. These two
things are not even remotely the same or that's not even remotely true, it means
it’s completely wrong, completely inaccurate. Right, exactly and it’s always used

in the negative so you can’t say, it is remotely close for example…no, not at all,
it’s always in the negative as Add said. All right, the next is an easy one Add,
tunes… and it’s just a slang term for songs, so you could say, hey, these are
really cool tunes, what is the name of the band? Or you might say these are
really catchy tunes, which means that they’re easy to listen to and enjoyable right
from the start. Yeah, so you’re talking about songs, talking about music, these
kind of tunes, very easy. Ok, the next one we have here Add is throwing on, and
if you're throwing something on, it means that you're putting it on quickly. So I
could say, I didn't have much time to get ready so I just threw on a pair of jeans
and a T-shirt. It’s almost like I didn’t decide at all. I didn’t spend much time, I
just put it on very quickly and left. Or if someone's in kind of grimy, ugly clothes
and just not ready to go out, I might just say, throw something on quickly and let's
get going to the party. Something like this kind of idea. Right, or you could also
say, throw on some music, and that just means, put it on. You’re just making it
sound like it's gonna go on easily and it’s usually when you’re telling someone
else. Or if you want to sound a bit cool, you could say, yeah, I’m just going to
throw on a bit of music. You just want to show that you're cool, that you do
things effortlessly. All right, the last phrase of the day Add, we have, don't keep
me in the dark. And if you're keeping someone in the dark about something it
means you're keeping it a secret from them. So I could say, I’m amazed you
were able to keep her in the dark about what you were doing for so long. Who
knows what he was doing. Right, it’s just a sentence. Just a sentence we made.
He might have been doing some bad behavior he didn't want to tell her, but
maybe he was planning a surprise birthday party, who really knows, but the point
is, in the sentence I was surprised that he was able to keep her in the dark for so
long. He was able to keep this, whatever it was, a secret from her for so long.
Right and in the dialogue we said, don't keep me in the dark about this, about the
playlist that he was choosing, so he didn’t want to have any secrets and have to
wait until the party to hear the playlist. Yeah, Add thought it was too important of
a party so he didn't want to be kept in the dark, he wanted to know about what
music I was throwing on. He was afraid that the guests might not enjoy my taste
in music, which is hard to believe. So Andrew made an interesting compromise
here and he said, well I could make a playlist too, and if they don't like his
playlist, we could put on mine afterwards. So agreed and he said, fair enough
basically just meaning, well, I can’t argue that, I guess I have the right to make
one as well, so fair enough. I agree with you I suppose. Right, what am I going
to say to someone that they say, well I just want to make a playlist and then they
say, you can make one too if you want to. Exactly, so anyway that brings us to
the end. Hopefully you guys make some killer playlist’s, I’d love to hear them.
Right, yeah, send us your lists over here at the 232 and we’ll maybe make a list
of our own for you. We’ll make a list of what we like to listen to. Too bad it's
illegal to just throw on tunes that we download, or else we’d doing that all the
time. But anyway, we could give you what we like anyway at some point. But
anyway that brings us to a close here. Lesson number 18 in the VIP room, we
will see you again next week.
