YEAR 12NEWS - Knox Grammar School

YEAR 12 NEWS
WEEK 7, TERM 1 – 2017
FROM THE ASSISTANT TEAM LEADER
What an amazing night CAS Swimming and Diving was last night. In
case you haven’t yet heard, the drought has been broken and we are
swimming in a pool of victory! Yes, after 14 long years, Knox WON the
CAS Swimming title last night! Brilliant! Congratulations to all of the
swimmers and divers on a Herculean effort. Further congratulations to
Swimming Captains Jack Ryan, Tom Williams and Kevin Zhang
and Diving Captain Nick Gordon for leading the Swimming and Diving
Teams with such inspiration and positivity. As well as the Swimming
team winning the CAS title, the Diving team had a podium finish in 3rd place. We are so proud of
all our swimmers and divers. The number of Year 12s who came to support their mates and the
School was simply superb. The atmosphere generated was fantastic and they set such a positive
tone to show, yet again, what great role-models they are.
Best Year 12 support team ever at CAS Swim &
Dive Championships. How could we not win?

Speaking of role-modelling, I spoke to Year 12 on Wednesday about how proud of them I am for
the way they treat the KSSA, their Locker Area and the whole School. It is a magnificent example
for the younger students to follow. Likewise, their approach to Chapel is inspiring. I had chills
listening to them sing Amazing Grace this week. The Rev always comments about how joyous it is
when Year 12 are in Chapel!
Well done and thank you, Year 12. You are all inspiring the School with your strength and great
leadership. Congratulations, again, to the CAS Swimming and Diving teams. You have left a
lasting legacy.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF STUDIES
SENIOR SECONDARY ACADEMY
Tom Gladigau starred as Professor Callahan in the
PLC production of 'Legally Blonde'
The boys continue to work towards their goals with drive and
determination. Evening study numbers are at an all time record, reflecting
the effectiveness of the learning spaces we offer. Whether the quiet,
individual space of the KSSA Library is preferred or the collaborative
environment of the Seniors' Hall, our young men are recognising
how effective their study can be without distraction and the extrinsic
motivation that comes from working with like-minded peers.
Student-Parent-Teacher interviews will be conducted for Year 12 on Monday 27 March.
Boys are asked to attend these interviews in school uniform. Interviews will be held in the Great
Hall, starting at 3:30pm. For these interviews, we are using the internet-based booking system
called Parent Teacher On-Line (PTO). The booking system will open at 8.00am on Monday 20
March. Parents will have received an email outlining what needs to be done along with their login
and pin codes. If you encounter any problems using PTO, please email Mr John Nelson.

the NZ National Pipe Band Championships in
Nelson last week.
On Wednesday during Year Meeting, Andrew Weeding, Chris Leggo, Krishna Suresh (Year 12)
and I presented a role play to the boys of how Student- Parent-Teacher interviews might look
if the student was to lead the discussion. The message was clearly to turn the meeting around
and place the student at the centre, directing discussion and taking ownership of their learning.
Ideally the focus of the evening will switch from being a Parent-Teacher Evening into a Student
Led Conference. During class next week, the boys should be given time to complete a student
reflection sheet that asks a range of questions relating to their learning, progress and goals. We
will encourage the boys to engage with their parents and ensure they have discussed a range of
issues prior to the evening. The PowerPoint used in the presentation along with the video of
the role play is available on the Portal.
