14+ Dance Scholarship
Candidates and 14+ Dance Scholarship Foundation Trustees
On 4 September, 23 candidates delighted the audience at the Te Whaea Theatre, NZSD in Wellington
for the biennial 14+ Dance Scholarship. This was the largest number of entries ever, and the
candidates and audience alike enjoyed the new format of the competition. Congratulations to all
participants, especially the three awardees. Lilly Maskery (Philippa Campbell School of Ballet,
Auckland) won the 14+ Dance Scholarship. valued at $7,000; Larissa Kiyoto-Ward (Mount Eden
Ballet Academy, Auckland) received the Elvira Macrae Award valued at $6,000; and Caitlin Hickey
(Chilton Dance Centre, Lower Hutt) received the Alexander Grant Training Award valued at $2,000.
Larissa, Lilly and Caitlin with judges Nicola
Searchfield and David Peden
The judges were UK-based David Peden and
Auckland-based Nicola Searchfield, both of whom
were formerly soloists with the Royal Ballet Company.
David is now a Freelance Teacher, Repetiteur and
Coach and Nicola is a pilates instructor. The guest
class tutor was Sarah Fitzsimons (photo below left),
another former Royal Ballet Company dancer
whose hour and a half class was much-appreciated
by candidates and audience alike, as was pianist
Nicholas Giles-Palmer’s marathon pianoplaying efforts.
A big thank you to all of the contributors
to the 14+ DanceScholarship
Foundation. These generous donors
have made it possible for the 3
scholarships to be biennially funded until
2023 and beyond, ensuring support for
talented young ballet dancers. It was
wonderful that Elvira Macrae (shown
far right with Larissa Kiyoto-Ward) was
able to make the trip from Tauranga to
present the Elvira Macrae Award.

Certificate of Ballet Teaching Studies (CBTS) Trainees at the Intensive Study Period (ISP)
First-year CBTS teacher trainees came together in September for an intensive 10-day training session
tutored by Sue Nicholls assisted by pianist Nicholas Giles-Palmer. The students practiced what they
had been studying through distance learning in their third module (CBTS 403). The RAD Syllabus
up to Intermediate is used as a catalyst for exploring breaking movement down, forming training
exercises, music and dynamics and the varying styles within the Character dances. It is a full-on
learning experience of practical exercise and group discussion, culminating in an assessment of
what they have learnt.

A Tribute to Matamata Teacher Fay Harbottle (Jan 1934 – Sept 2016)
Much-loved teacher Fay Harbottle taught in Matamata for over
60 years. Sadly, Fay passed away in September.
“
8
Together with Judith and Colin Ward, Ron and I drove to
Fay’s funeral in Te Aroha (her birth town) to pay our respects
to this legendary Matamata Dance teacher. As an RAD
Organiser it was a delight to know Fay with her warm and
cheerful disposition, always having her exam entries in on
time, handwritten in a beautiful clear script. Many examiners
commented on how natural and polite her pupils were during
Fay (centre) with former Area Organisers
their examination. From the Eulogy given by one of her two
Faye Stamp (Bay of Plenty) and Annette
brothers there was no doubt that Fay was born to dance.
Leach (Waikato) in 2013
Evidently her parents wisely recognised this and were
prepared to drive her, at the age of three, from Te Aroha to Auckland for dance lessons each weekend
in their Morris Minor car. She started teaching as a 15-year-old teenager - jazz, tap, ballet, highland
and later ballroom where she was to meet and marry her soul mate and dance partner Leon. Together
they made a great team, and they both became Ballroom dancing adjudicators as well as teachers.
For those living in the Matamata area the classic sign hanging at her gate ‘Harbottle Studios’ with
the graphic of a couple ballroom dancing, was a proud icon recognising, for those in the know, her
devotion and passion, love of children and love of all forms of Dance. Matamata was the richer for
her presence and she is much missed. I am sure you will be dancing with the angels, Fay.

The Examiner Feedback Seminar held at the end of our AEC session was extremely well received
and well attended. Many thanks go to Carryne Algie for her tour feedback which will help teachers to
assist their pupils to reach their potential under those exacting and sometimes nerve wracking exam
conditions. The seminar was invaluable for both the more experienced teachers and for those still in
training, as is clear from the comments below.
• Life member Anne Samson: “I have really enjoyed our feedback sessions from the examiners
who have endeavoured to explain what our students are lacking to gain that extra mark. They have
been very thorough in passing on their knowledge. Let’s hope we have one each year as they are
very beneficial.”
• DDTS student Iggy Gloy: “The feedback seminar was fantastic! On one level it felt good to hear
things that I know we’ve focused on in our teaching and then to hear things that I will definitely
focus on for next year. Absolutely brilliant professional development – thank you”

Graduation Season 2016
16 – 26 November
Hosanna Ball & Song Ten
The New Zealand School of Dance 2016 Graduation Season is fast approaching in what
promises to be an outstanding variety of performances. The programme of works will
showcase the efforts of an array of influential choreographers, and the hard work of the
students and tutors. Attendees should prepare themselves for an exhilarating evening
featuring a number of premieres and the work of acclaimed choreographers from New
Zealand and abroad.
Highlights include the supremely lyrical Meistens Mozart by the artistic director of San
Francisco Ballet Helgi Tomasson, the exuberant ensemble ballet Tempo di Valse, as well as a
pas de deux from The Sleeping Beauty and Jack Carter’s Pas de Deux Romantique, danced
on alternate nights. Significantly, the ‘ballet twins’ Jiří & Otto Bubeníček have visited the
School this month to collaborate with the students on a new work for NZSD Graduation. Jiří’s
choreography for this new work will be enhanced by his brother Otto’s costume design.

2017 will see the launch of the highly anticipated Chilton Ballet
Academy. The Academy has been designed to offer the best
possible platform from which talented young dancers can pursue
a career in Dance. Students will divide their school day between
academic classes taught in a classroom environment, and a
range of Dance classes including Classical Ballet Technique,
Pointe Technique, Repertoire, Contemporary, Coaching, Pilates
and Conditioning. The Chilton Ballet Academy faculty have a
wealth of experience and are extremely dedicated to helping
each student reach their potential. If you would like more

my Dance – 2016 Photo Competition
New lecture series
Our ongoing my Dance campaign inspired the
theme for this year’s photo competition, as we
asked members to show us ‘what does dance
mean to you?’ Entries were judged by Darcey
Bussell CBE (RAD President), Luke Rittner
(Chief Executive) and award-winning
photographer Spiros Politis. We received entries
from members in 28 different countries; the
judges really enjoyed reviewing the range of
images and my Dance stories.
The CPD department is pleased to announce
an upcoming online lecture series created by
members of the RAD Faculty of Education. The
lectures cover themes such as Somatic Tools for
Dance Education and the Adult Ballet Learner.
These lectures are free for this CPD year and are
available to book now at www.rad.org.uk/cpd
The image submitted by RAD Registered
Teacher Susana Gonzalez-Castro, from Spain,
was chosen as our winner. For Susana and her
students, ‘ballet is like a perfume... stays with us
for the rest of the day!’ Susana is the lucky winner
of an iPad mini.
RAD Friend India Newsom Davis, from London,
was chosen as the runner up and RAD
Registered Teacher Federica Palini, from Italy,
was awarded a special commendation. Both won
free 2016/17 membership.
Following the success of last year’s Public Choice
Award, we once again gave our social media
followers worldwide the opportunity to vote for
their favourite entry online. With 18% of the votes,
RAD Registered Teacher Dafni Markopoulioti,
from Greece, was chosen as this year’s Public
Choice Award winner. Dafni also won free
2016/17 membership.
Look out for this year’s photos in future
membership literature.

Promotional film
We have created a short film capturing some of the
events of a typical exam day and the associated
emotions. In the film, we speak to some of those
involved with exams – teachers, candidates
and examiners – in order to get a sense of the
excitement and exhilaration of exam day.
Although the film is intended for everyone who is
involved – or might become involved – with RAD
exams, we hope it will help teachers explain to
candidates and their parents the significance and
meaning of RAD examinations – as a culmination
of the work and dedication over many months
from all concerned, the thrill and enjoyment of
performance, and the sense of achievement and
elation after completing an exam.
Visit www.rad.org.uk/achieve/exams to watch.
Silver SwansTM
Our new Silver Swans pilot workshops,
due to have taken place this summer in
the US and UK, have been postponed
until spring 2017. The decision was taken
after receiving valuable customer feedback
and we felt that it was in the best interests
of both the initiative and of participating
teachers to take stock and adapt our model
to take this into account. Teachers who
have already shown an interest in attending
do not need to re-apply; dates and venues
will be announced on the RAD website as
soon as we have them. In the meantime,
please email [email protected] if you have
any questions.

Do you think you’re too old to take graded
examinations? Affiliate Member Doreen Pechey
successfully passed her Grade 6 exam in July at
the age of 71. She shares her my Dance story.
UK NEWS
Never too late
Ten years ago, I was visiting my niece who
teaches ballet in Ontario, Canada. She offered
me the choice of attending her ballet class or
helping to look after her lively four year old (she
has since passed RAD Grade 5, and is studying
Intermediate Foundation) and two year old (he
also studies ballet). I chose the ballet class
and was hooked; my niece had a live pianist to
accompany the dancers, rather than using CDs.
That was my very first lesson; I was 61 years old.
On returning home it took some time to find
Monica Cleaver, who now teaches me in
Caversham, Berkshire. I have danced with her
ballet school at the Hexagon in Reading in Swan
Lake and Coppélia. When I started, Monica said
that on taking up ballet seriously one loses two
dress sizes in six months; overall I’ve lost four
or five.
I started dancing with Monica’s adult class, but it
wasn’t as challenging as I hoped. So Monica gave
me permission to join the Intermediate class with
Alex Fitch (now an RAD examiner). Then I joined
a second Intermediate class with Alex, which
turned into an Intermediate Foundation class –
but hey! I was getting to two classes
each week, so who cares as long as they are
about the right level? The others who dance with
me in my classes are generally between 13 and
18 years old.
I had an arthroscopy on my left knee in December
2010, and then a unicompartmental knee
replacement in June 2014. I had been dancing at
an RAD Associate Class in Battersea when my
left knee first bent when I lifted my right foot; that
was when I realised something had to be done!
When I went to discuss the replacement, I said
my knee bent when I took the other foot off the
ground, adding, ‘you cannot do a pirouette on
a bent knee.’ My consultant said ‘you are not
normal – I mean that in the nicest way. If all my
patients were like you, I would get better results.’
I returned to my Intermediate Foundation class in
the September, but all the youngsters had taken
and passed their Intermediate, so that class no
longer existed. Monica suggested I take Grade 6
with RAD Registered Teacher Roman Chovanec.
By this time I was doing three classes each week,
plus a private class with Monica.
At the age of 71, I have just passed Grade 6.
I got 51%, and passed all 10 sections. The
RAD sent me an email confirming that I am the
oldest person on its current database to have
passed Grade 6. I’ve been told that until recently
there was an upper age limit of 30 for this
examination, so there’s a chance that I could be
the oldest ever...
I am now studying both Intermediate Foundation
and Grade 7. I would like to be able to encourage
other older (although I never consider myself as
‘older’) people to take up similar challenges.

En Avant
Genée 2016
RAD Canada hosted the first ever En Avant
Dance Teacher Conference in Toronto from
20–23 August. Among the special guests were
Robert Binet, RAD Vice President Li Cunxin,
Karen Kain and Stacey Tookey.
In addition to the hugely enjoyable gala dinner
and fashion show, the successful conference
saw dance educators from around the world,
including Australia, Canada, Switzerland, the
UK and the United States, come together for
a packed programme delivered to over 200
international delegates.
The schedule covered movement and dance
workshops (in genres from ballet to jazz and
hip hop) and business seminars on marketing
and financial management. There were also
sessions on healthcare in the dance studio,
health and wellbeing for dance teachers, and
panel discussions on exams, competitions and
perfectionism in dance.
Applications for Genée 2016 closed on 3
October, with successful candidates being
informed on 7 October. Bursaries have been
awarded to candidates who otherwise might
not have been able to take part.
The funds raised in order to stage Genée
2016 represent a huge achievement by
RAD Australia, of whom we are immensely
proud. Thank you also to our sponsors, Bloch
(Genée, High Tea and Dance Challenge),
Mondor (Choreographic Award), Energetiks
(Commissioned Choreographer), International
Dance Supplies and Harlequin Floors. We
are also grateful to the Dame Margot Fonteyn
Scholarship Fund and the members of the
Genée Circle for their support.

Awards Day
On 20 July, RAD staff, students and guests gathered in South Kensington for the 2016 Awards Day,
involving graduates from across the globe. Fellowships of the RAD were awarded to Elaine Rae
(posthumously), Kathryn Wade and the Faculty of Education’s Heulwen Price.
The Patron’s Lunch
24
RAD dancers down the Mall
The RAD took a lead role in the Patron’s Lunch on 24
June: a spectacular celebration of the 90th birthday of
Her Majesty the Queen, her dedication to service and
patronage of over 600 charities. With an audience of
10,000 expectant guests, the sun came out and RAD
dancers shone brightly in the big parade. With segments
based around each decade of Her Majesty’s reign, from the
1950s to the present day, the event featured choreography
created by RAD Artistic Director, Lynn Wallis.
Jessica Wilson in the RAD Marketing team said: ‘Being part of the parade was the epitome of a special
day. Despite the downpours a true British spirit shone through, and the 300 dancers added life and vigour
to the marching display of over 600 charities. The smiling support along the Mall, everyone sporting their
ponchos, was a sight to behold. I’m confident that it was a spectacle!’

Examinations Information
Special Examinations – Minimum 4 hours Examining Time
The closing date for a session requested outside the published dates is 2 months before the start of the

sent to the NZ office with a $75 deposit which forms part of the fee.
Less than 3 hours’ Examining Time
Teachers who have less than 3 hours examination work may choose to hold their examinations in their
own studios by paying an additional charge on the total fee income from their examination and class or

surcharge will not apply if teachers combine with other teachers to ensure a total of more than 3 hours.
Replacement Certificates and Replacement Medals
A charge of $40 will be made to replace any certificates which are incorrect, except where errors have
been made by the Academy. The same fee will be charged to replace lost certificates. In all instances the
original certificate must be returned to the NZ office before a replacement certificate can be issued.
A charge of $17 will be made to replace any medals.

the RAD office within a week of the conclusion of the examination tour. Alternatively the candidate may
carry forward the examination fee for one session. Check details with the RAD office.
