Round 12

Match Report: Rd 12 Brunswick 3.5.23 def by Kew Comets 15.12.102 Another tough day at the office. We started really well and applied plenty of pressure. We also used the ball purposefully and were able to match them till quarter time. I was impressed by the way all players attacked the ball and laid plenty of tackles in the first quarter but this fell away a bit as the game progressed. Francis, Max, Angus and Jesse were holding their own in the centre bounces and using the ball well out of these situations. After quarter time we got a little rattled. Sometimes when you play good sides you can match them for the 1st quarter or so and then they can get off the leash which is pretty much what happened. Francis, another good game, with lots of contested ball and some excellent marks around the ground. Also you laid some strong tackles. Try to get the ball off a little quicker as sometimes players make position, and are ignored. We all must get better at using the ball quickly. You were able to win contested ball around the ground and it is important to try and get the ball to the next player in the link. We may rotate you and Angus off the back flank this week and try other players through the midfield, well done keep up the good work. Max as usual very competitive in the ruck and some marks around the ground. Maybe take a little more care with your kicks. You are a very good kick so be confident to hit a target. Your quick handballs out of contests were very good. Your tackling has picked up as well, strong tackles on the bigger boys is what we want, well done good game. Jesse, good in a number of positions which is good for the team and great for your development as a player. There are still some improvements that can be made to your playing, positioning and use of the ball, but you have certainly developed into a better player as the year has progressed. Your tackling has improved as has your attack on the ball. The one thing I want you to try and do better is to get the ball off to the first option. Against better sides you can’t try to dummy twice better to hand ball off and get the ball back. Jonas a really good game in a number of positions. Your confidence in attacking the ball has developed really well and you are backing yourself to win contested ball. Take a little more care with your disposal and try hard to hit up a target with a handball or kick. Sometimes a handball will do if there are no targets then bang it long for sure. A couple of times you probably could have tried more to find a teammate. The most important thing is now you realise you can compete with the bigger boys and beat them -‐ well done. Last thing, no matter what you or we think of the umpiring, don’t chat them as this only makes it harder for us to get a kick from the umpire. Levi some really good things on the day -‐ your confidence over the last three games has improved dramatically. Last week you laid 6 tackles, which was great but down a bit this week, so try to pick this up it helps get you into the swing of the game. You won some contested ball against Kew which is good. Back yourself to go for more marks around the ground, you have good hands and take the ball well out of the air so this week 4-‐5 marks. Your skills are also improving at training, be confident to win the ball and use it well done. Caleb over the jet lag and the kilt incident, a really good game. It was pleasing to see you follow the instructions of playing in front and attacking the ball. You did this well on a number of occasions and won the contested football, you are also showing more confidence in using handball and giving the ball off to the right option. Your skills are getting better, be confident mate, you can compete with and beat anybody, that’s the way to play the game. Congrats on a good game. Try to get the tackles up this week. Clarrie back from a week off -‐ some good things out on the wing and in and around the contests again. When clear, measure and assess options and try to use the footy more deliberately. I thought you used your pace well to win the footy and tackled well which is great to see, well done. Always break to space when Angus or Francis get it in the middle as if we can get you in space and forward we are a big chance to score. More tackles this week. Ben some good things during the game, it is great to see you working hard every week. Your confidence and skills are improving all the time, I thought you trained really well this week and with the added confidence the next three games should be good for you, keep up the great work. Erik, some good things a couple of marks and some really good efforts at the football. Your athleticism and confidence are developing and you certainly have been contributing well to the team effort over the last 4-‐5 weeks. Always try to stay focused on football even if your opponent roughs you up a little. Just say thanks and take the free kick. Don’t get caught up in any of that business, get on with working hard and trying to beat your opponent. We want a good game from you Sunday. Alex some good things, you are able to win the ball well in contested situations and take excellent marks. You simply have to try and work at these efforts consistently for four quarters, pace yourself around the game. If you don’t win the ball in your first effort, keep your head. Try to lay effective tackles and work hard to get the ball. Again important that you stay focused on footy be disciplined and work hard that is what makes a good player. Toby, you were moved around into a number of positions and I thought you worked hard in all positions, a couple of good marks. It is important that if you are forward, that you work into space start from behind your opponent so you can get a break on him. This is particularly important from centre bounces. Your training this week has been fantastic, so let’s see three good games to wrap up the year. Eamon, the wing, I think this might be the spot. Your effort on the weekend was great, lots of possessions and some excellent use of the ball, quick hands off to the first option, which is what we want. Also it was pleasing to see you attack the ball and win it in contests. Be confident as you are developing into a strong boy so use your attributes and win the footy. Again you should be looking forward to three big games over the next three weeks. 2nd highest on the tackle count well done. Well done. Roki, I thought you played really well on the back flank. You repelled their attacks on numerous occasions. You often beat your man in one on one contests. You ran well and cleared the ball out of dangerous areas on numerous times. Well done great game. Carl keep at it mate, another good effort against bigger and stronger opposition. I like the way you are working hard time after time. This is what we need. Players that get down to business and work hard to beat their man or even someone else’s man. Be confident to go for marks and call for the footy from players who have it in front of you. We need targets who present and are confident in winning the ball in a contest. You are one of our main targets in this situation. You also have to position up behind the footy so you can win it again on the way out of our forward line. Well done on a good game, your skills are improving all the time. More tackles. Angus, a good effort. After spending most of last week tackling one handed, you were back to your hard at it, in and under self. Winning the ball from stoppages and using it well to players forward of you. I thought you did well to also get the ball off by hand and take marks when the ball was in transition. Try to be a little quicker with your decision making from a mark or free kick. You should almost be able to telepathically signal to who is going to get it, so they lead with confidence and purpose. Well done good game. Otis and Elijah congrats to both of you on good games. You both contributed well on the day and matched it with the bigger and stronger opposition. Otis your defensive work was very good you were also able to run into space and carry the ball well for us. Elijah your ability to pick the ball up on the move and through a contest was excellent. Also your decision making is very good and you both showed the right attitude when in a game where we are being beaten – ( keep persevering) -‐ which is what you both did well done. Gus keep at it mate some good work in and under, you are also training well and I am expecting three good games from you in the next three weeks. I like the way you stay focused and keep working hard, that’s what it is all about win lose or draw. This week we might be able to match you up on a player of your size, you will beat him for sure. More tackles this week. Liem, some good things in and around the contests, it was difficult as you were playing on some very good players, but you kept at it and worked hard. Your tackles were down and one thing I noticed is, as you run at a player who is about to pick up the ball you need to slow down a little and concentrate as they often try to side step at the last minute, this happened a couple of times on the weekend and you ran past them. Concentrate on their hips and wrap them up. Aaron another excellent game. Your work rate is excellent and your second and third efforts have been consistent throughout the year. As I said a few weeks ago you have been competitive with all forwards you have played on this year. Well done excellent game. Punch from behind, be careful with your decision making when kicking in and try not to run over line. Congrats on a good game Aaron. Tackles 7. 6. 4. 3. 2. 2. Angus Roki Jesse, Eamon Francis/Elijah Aaron, Toby, Gus, Alex, Erik Ben, Carl, Caleb, Clarrie, Jonas, Otis, Liem, Levi, Max Overall tackles were down all players should lay 5 tackles per game. If you don’t win the footy, then you must work hard to drag them down with strong correct tackles. Everyone this week must lay at least 4-‐5 tackles. Umpires Even when it is hard to work the umpire out it is important to stay focused and not get involved in arguing or back chatting the umpire. One of the guys last week was a bit difficult to follow, but we have to go with it. If you back chat or argue, I will take you off the ground for a spell. I umpire from time to time and anybody that back chats me, or complains is less likely to get a free kick, not sure why? But you all need to understand this. Interesting Facts. 1.
