Issue 11
October is national safety month, many organisations have
become involved in raising awareness of WHS Australia wide. The
NT is having a safe work week from October 27-2nd November.
I would like to congratulate the Nganmarriyanga store and the
Warnkurr Club who have not had any reportable incidents for the
whole year keep up the safe work!
By making sure we think SAFETY before we do any task, we can all
work towards minimizing injuries that occur in the workplace.
October 2013
GOVERNANCE TRAINING
On the 28th and 29th of October ALPA will be hosting the 2nd
annual, advanced indigenous directors governance workshop, at the
Travelodge Mirambeena. 20 invitations were sent out to various
chairpersons and directors from ALPA and other corporations such as
Pirlangimpi Progress Association, Maningrida Progress Association and
The East Arnhem Shire. The workshop has been partly funded by the
Capacity Strengthening Program through FaHCSIA and is being
facilitated by Iain Summers from the Australian Institute of Company
Directors.
The AICD is the largest organisation nationally representing 32,000
members, they are a not-for-profit organisation influencing governance
laws, practices and the performance of directors, boards and their
organisations. Their course structures are recognized as some of the top
programs in the world.
This year the topics up for discussion are:
Assessing Company Performance and Financial information for
Directors.
Holding the governance workshops is a great opportunity to bring
board members from across the Northern Territory together to discuss
ways to improve business and share experiences with each other.

Power costs
Based on the previous year’s power
consumption, the government’s power
price increase will see costs raise across
our 5 stores by $140,000.
This is an increase on total expenses by 1.64%
and if we were to pass
on the price rise to
customers all products would need to
increase .45%.

The Ark device works to regulate
voltage flow and save spikes in usage,
in turn saving money and carbon
emissions. We have had the device
installed at head office, along with a
trial at the Lake Evella store which was
introduced on the 18th of October.
Once we see some positive results the
opportunity to have

another step towards
greening our stores.

MERCHANDISING UPDATE
MARS PROMOTION
We are currently running
a mars footy promotion
which so far has been
very successful, when
the customer buys a
mars bar they have the
opportunity to go into a
weekly draw to win a
Mini Sherin Mars Football.
There are 600 balls to
give away, it has been
very exciting for both
customers and staff.
WHS STATISTICS
Every day over 200 people injure their
joints, muscles or tendons at work
seriously enough to require at least
one week off work .
This results in lost productivity for the
organisation and is defined as a LTI
(lost time injury).
Injuries to the back are the most
common incidents with knee and
shoulder injuries closely following.
These claims are most often
associated with lifting or handling
crates, cartons, boxes, cases, drums,
kegs, barrels, cans or handling people
mainly in a medical setting Based on
their severity and frequency of these
injuries the Australian Work Health and
Safety Strategy 2012-2022 has
identified musculoskeletal disorders as
a priority for improvement. The
Australian Strategy provides a 10 year
national framework to drive
improvements in workplace health
and safety in Australia.

KEEPING IT CALM
There is little doubt that anger can be a
contributing factor in workplace injuries, but
what do you do about it? Here are some tips:
Consciously determine to be calm. Don't
react, think! Remember your goals and
respond appropriately. Choose to remain
calm!
Communicate. When someone upsets you,
tell them. Calmly talk to them about how
you feel about their words or actions. Learn
to express yourself better -- clear and
composed.
Remove yourself. Get away from the scene
until you can respond without anger. Your
success will not happen overnight. Take it
one step at a time, one day at a time.
Remember to relax. Relaxation exercises or
music can be helpful. Keep in mind you can
reach out to someone you trust for help.
Frequently take time for yourself. Do
something you enjoy like walking in the
park, swimming, or watching a good
movie. Do something nice for someone you
admire. It's okay to feel good about
yourself. Choose to!
Look for the positives. Don't dwell on the
negatives. "Don't sweat the small stuff." Don't
worry about things that are out of your
personal control. This is difficult, but it is an
attitude and behavior that can be learned!
RIDDLE
If a man carried my burden,
he would break his back. I am
not rich, but leave silver in my
track. What am I?

RJCP UPDATE
It has been a very busy and exciting month with the take over of
the a new Yolngu business being supported by our RJCP team.
Wendy and the RJCP team have spent many hours coordinating
and putting together ideas for the handover and refurbishment of
the Rulku Lodge on Milingimbi Island. There has been a big
overhaul of the existing furniture, remodeling of the common areas, as well as
instillation of new T.V’s and the extension of three new dongas to add to the
Lodges capacity.
The RJCP program is putting together courses to train Yolngu in various fields,
which will eventually lead to employment in their community or give them the
skills to establish their own businesses. The women who have attended the cleaning course are very keen to begin working at the Rulku Lodge in housekeeping
and hospitality. A horticulture course is going to base its practical stages at the
Rulku Lodge which will build skills and improve the presentation of the lodge.
IT TIPS AND TRICKS
Compare two documents
Word includes a tool that allows you to compare two documents
to each other and for you to selectively mark up the document with
the differences between the two documents.
Display the Review tab of the ribbon, click the Compare tool and then choose Compare. Word displays the Compare Documents dialog box, you then select the original document and the new edited document and the sort of mark-up you require.
If you want to select what sort of changes are marked then select the More button. When you have
finished click on OK and Word makes the changes and shows the two documents side by side.
Finding another word for…
One of the tools that Word provides is a full thesaurus. You can use this tool to find alternate words
with the same meaning (synonyms), words with the opposite meaning (antonyms), or related words.
Related words are typically similar words based on the root of the word you specify.
To find a related word, follow these steps. First position the cursor on the word you wish to check
then press Shift+F7
Word displays the Research task pane at the right side of the screen, with the thesaurus information
displayed.
If related words are available for the word, you will see the Related Words choice in the task pane.
Click on Related Words, and in the Related Words list, select the desired related word. Click the
down-arrow to the right of the related word and choose Insert.
