From the CEO’s Desk by Dave Bouchard
Recognizing those who make a
difference
The best time to plant a tree was 20
years ago. The second best time is
now. –Chinese Proverb
In January each year the Chamber
and the City take time to recognize
individuals who make a significant
contribution to their community.
Beth Hunkapiller, a twenty-year
member of the San Carlos School District Board of Trustees, will be recognized as the 2013 Citizen of the Year.
During Beth’s tenure on the school board, she worked to
ensure a high quality education and facilities for local
children and to provide competitive teacher salaries and
funding for teacher development.
In addition to her service on the school board, Beth will be
lauded for her work in helping start the San Carlos Charter
Learning Center, the first school to receive a charter in
California. She served 18 months as the Department of
Education’s Charter Schools Division Director, and currently is chair of the board of directors for Aspire Public
Schools, the largest and highest performing charter school
organization in the state.
Also during the Recognition Gala on January 24th, we’ll
recognize a business and two individuals for their contributions to the Chamber and the community. Selected to
receive the 2013 Business of the Year award is Spasso
Restaurant for their contributions to the business environment and community-at-large.
Spasso has supported all types of people and needs in the
community, including opening their restaurant on Thanksgiving Day to feed those who had no place to go or could
not afford a holiday dinner. Over the years, Spasso has
also supported Kainos Home and Training Center for the
Developmentally Disabled, San Mateo County Health
Foundation, the San Carlos Elementary Schools, St.
Charles Parish and School, and many other organizations.
Lee Forrester of Mary Kay Cosmetics will receive the
2013 Ambassador of the Year award for her exceptional
volunteer involvement, energy and enthusiasm, and outstanding service to the Chamber through the Ambassador
program.
Finally, Laura Marley of LegalShield will be honored as the
Chamber’s 2013 Member of the Year for contributing
positively to the quality of business life, her commitment to
the Chamber’s mission and recurring support of Chamber
activities and events.
I hope you can join us the evening of Friday, January 24th
when we congratulate all of this year’s award recipients!

Our Recognition Gala will be on Friday January 24th at
the Hotel Sofitel. We are very excited to honor former
San Carlos School District Board Trustee Beth Hunkapiller
as 2013 San Carlos Citizen of the Year. In addition to 20
years on the school board, Beth has given so much of herself to our community and I hope you will help us thank
her on the 24th.
We strive to continue strengthening the message to our
members that the Chamber has value to every business.
We bring value in many ways, networking opportunities
with fellow members as well as local, county, state and
federal government officials; city government advocacy;
business lead generation and business support services,
just to name a few. The Chamber is our city's business
association and exists only to support the vitality of our
community through strong commerce.
Our Chamber Board, staff and ambassadors are always
available to help you better understand how to get the
most value from your membership. Please allow us to
show you how we can help. I look forward to seeing you

have been matched by the Hunkapillers. The two have raised a son and daughter in San Carlos who

San Carlos Center Construction Update:
January 2014
Collaborating on
regional issues for
over four decades
More than 381,180 man-hours have been invested in
the creation of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation’s San
Carlos Center. This will be a busy year, building up to a
grand opening in the fall.
Inside the medical center for this entire month, workers are doing more taping, plastering and sanding to
walls in hallways, exam rooms and offices on all floors.
The acoustical ceilings are being installed, as are windows in stair wells, and inner and outer courtyards.
The network of scaffolding surrounding the medical
center will start to come down soon. In the parking
structure, the “crash” walls are going in, as are the
parapet walls and columns. Across the campus, landscaping has begun, and curbs, gutters and sidewalks
are being created along Industrial Road.
