Lotus-Eaters and Cyclops: The Truth! -S.S. Strong Oak Welcome to The Strong Oak Museum Here in our main exhibit, “Lotus-Eaters and Cyclops: The Truth” we have recovered many artifacts and collected many photos of actual events from Odysseus’s adventures retold in the Odyssey. Wood from Odysseus’s Raft This a piece of wood from the boat Odysseus was on when Poseidon wrecked it. We recovered it on the coast of Scheria. This matches to Odysseus’s boat because his boat was made of oak and it was near the site of his expected crash. Spear This very fine piece of wood is the spear that Odysseus used to blind the Cyclops. Found in a cave on the island of the cyclops. The Wineskin of Odysseus Maron, a priest of Apollo gave Odysseus this extremely potent and delectable wine. This wine was given to Odysseus for protecting Maron and his family in time of peril, and it was held in this wineskin Cave Drawing of the Cyclops Found in the cave along with the spear and skeleton, this cave drawing is believed to have been drawn by Polyphemus himself. Skeleton of the Sheep that Odysseus hid under This skeleton put on display in a local museum is believed to be the skeleton Odysseus hid himself under, because DNA from Odysseus, such as hair, was found on it. Polyphemus’ cave This is the cave that Polyphemus lived in and captured Odysseus. This is also where Odysseus stabbed Polyphemus in the eye and escaped. Lotus fruit This is a recreation of a lotus fruit believed to be given to Odysseus’ crew. This fruit had the power to make Odysseus’ crew want to never leave the island of Lotus eaters. Come to the Luncheon At the Odyssey themed Luncheon we will be serving finger sandwiches, pigs in a blanket, and for the adventurous type, lotus flowers. Also, authentic Greek wine will be served to adults.
