Thanks To Our Vets Life’s too short to spend so much of it in line. We can’t help you at the grocery store, the big box, or airport security, but we can help you at the credit union. When you sign up for online services from the credit union, you can do many of the same transactions from the comfort of your computer. A few clicks and keystrokes can not only save you the time and trouble of a trip to the credit union for many transactions, but also shrinks your carbon footprint, if ever so slightly. Going online also means you can do your finances at 7 a.m. or 7 p.m. or anytime 24/7. You’re on your schedule, not ours. To find out how easy it is to sign up for online services, check out our Web site or contact the credit union. Do your friends and family a favor: invite them to join the credit union. They’ll thank you for the chance to take advantage of the benefits of belonging. And when they join, you’ll have done yourself a good turn as well. Here’s why: as a non-profit financial cooperative, we only exist to serve our valued member/owners. A broader base of members means we can continuously work to improve our products and services. We can be more efficient and pass those savings onto you. So do your part and pass the word. Let your friends and family in on one of the best ways to achieve financial security - membership in the credit union. For details on membership eligibility, contact the credit union or visit our Web site. Regular Shares........................................................... 1.00% Share Draft/Ck......................................................... 0.50% Regular IRA.............................................................. 1.00% Escrow....................................................................... 0.50% Time For A Financial Checkup As the year 2008 draws to a close, your credit union urges you to do a financial checkup. Just as you would have an annual physical examination with your doctor, you should pick a time of year to do an annual physical of your finances. This is a good time, before the busy holidays set in. Here’s a list of essentials to consider: * Review your financial goals. Have you made progress or fallen short? If so, figure out why, and revise your goals to get back on track. Don’t have any goals? Now would be a good time to set some. * Evaluate changes in your personal situation. Things such as a job change, divorce, adding a baby to your family, retiring, buying a house, getting married, or moving may cause you to rethink your budget, spending, savings, and investments. * Assess assets and their protection. Review your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance, health insurance, and auto insurance. * Prepare for the unexpected. How are you set for disability if you were to become sick or injured for a prolonged period? Review your will, and if applicable, your estate plan. Have any changes taken place that require updating? * Evaluate debt. How are you doing on controlling and paying down debt? In particular, has credit card debt increased this year? If so, is it time to consider a consolidation loan and getting rid of one or more credit cards? * How’s your credit score? If you haven’t ordered your free annual copies of your credit report, now’s a good time. * Prepare to reduce income taxes. Check eligibility for all possible deductions. Check with a tax professional to see if you’re eligible for a tax-deductible Individual Retirement Account (IRA). If so, see your credit union to open an IRA. * Review your retirement plans. Are you contributing enough to your various retirement accounts to live the kind of life you want? If your financial health is in good shape, congratulations! If it can use a little work, at least you know where to concentrate your efforts. Definitely make plans to see your credit union. We can help in many of these areas. November 11 is the day we pay tribute to our U.S. military veterans and honor those who have given their lives in the service of our country. Your credit union offers a heart-felt thank you to those who have served and those who continue to serve, in order to preserve our nation’s freedom. Check your wallet or purse. Are you carrying a credit card issued by some financial institution other than your credit union? That’s like throwing money down the drain. In these tough financial times, every dollar counts. And the dollars count up pretty fast when comparing your credit union’s card to that of the competition. Interest rates alone can add up to several hundred dollars per year alone in savings. We also save you money by not charging an annual fee. And our fees for special services, like withdrawing cash at an ATM using your credit card, are also lower. Why is our credit card the overall better deal? Easy. Your credit union is run by you, the members. We are focused on providing members the best possible service at the lowest possible cost. Banks and other for-profit financial institutions are focused on providing the best rate of return for their investors. Stop by or call today and find out how a credit card from your credit union can save you money. Reduce Your Energy Bills This Winter Prices for natural gas, electricity, and heating oil are expected to stay high this winter. Here are 10 tips to save money and energy: 1. Set the thermostat lower in winter and higher in summer. Consider installing a programmable thermostat. 2. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs. 3. Replace your forced air furnace filter monthly, or if you have reusable filter, clean them monthly. 4. Air dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher’s drying cycle. 5. Lower the thermostat on your water heater (120 degrees to 130 degrees). 6. Take short showers instead of baths. 7. When washing dishes and clothes, wash only full loads. 8. Wash clothes in cold water instead of warm or hot water. 9. Install an insulation blanket around your water heater if it is more than five years old and located in an unheated portion of your home. 10. When buying home appliances and products, look for the Energy Star. These products meet strict efficiency guidelines.
