Center for Student Involvement The Olympian tribune APRIL-MAY 2011 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 5 Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated The past month has been very busy for the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Zeta Omicron Chapter. The brothers of the Zeta Omicron chapter attended their 2011 Midwestern Regional Convention where they competed in the regional step show and placed as runner up. Shortly after Regionals, the brothers competed in Sigma Alpha Iota’s All Campus Sing Philanthropy where they placed second for the fraternity division. A major highlight for the chapter was the initiation of its newest members, Kearron Smith, Ryan Hudson, Caleb Parker, and Marqus Veasey. These young men have been a joy to get to know and will make an impact in the chapter, campus, and community. The brothers will be participating in Relay for Life and performing a step routine at the event. To conclude the semester, the Zeta Omicron chapter will collaborate with the Nu Rho chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. for a program titled “A Walk From A to Z”; in which the two organizations will be participating in the march of dimes walk on May 7th in Paducah KY., at Noble Park at 10:00am. The brothers are inviting others to participate as well. If you have any questions or would like to participate please contact Jesse Adams at [email protected]. "Letters today, Leaders tomorrow." THE OLYMPIAN TRIBUNE Page 2 Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity "Fraternities and Sororities symbolize all that we wish to accomplish in our lives. They represent the struggles we all face as we grow. Why we cling to them no one can explain, but in the end, we are all stronger for it." -Unknown The month of April brought a sequence of storms resulting in extensive damage across much of this region of our country. Members of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity spent some of their time following these events assisting the flood prevention efforts in Metropolis, Ill. Many volunteer stations were set up throughout the city so that sand bags could be filled and distributed to homes and other structures threatened by the rising waters of the Ohio River. The participating Chops took part in bagging sand, loading and unloading delivery trucks, and creating blockades as needed along the river. "Although the waters may continue to rise beyond the point of our efforts, knowing that we put in the time and effort for potential relief provides some resolution," said Logan Wheeler, a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. The Lambda Eta chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha has recently installed its newest set of chapter officers, as well. Much of the focus of these officers and the chapter as a whole in the upcoming months will be on fundraising efforts for the new house and apartment complexes to be built on the fraternity's property. These fundraising efforts are currently in full swing and there is much anticipation for the progress that will soon be made with this project. Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity currently holds one of the Gold Achievement Awards among the Greek organizations on campus. Additionally, four of the chapter's members were elected senators of the Student Government Association this month. The fraternity's team placed first in the Best Racer Competition put on by the Department of Military Science, and placed third in the All Campus Sing competition. As the semester comes to an end, the members of Lambda Chi prepare for their own annual philanthropy held in the fall semester, Watermelon Bust, which will benefit the North American Food Drive. Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority Alpha Sigma Alpha recently had our philanthropic event called Teeter for Two. The event was a great success with all of the storms that came through that evening. The event it self was a 24 hour day of teetering on teeter totters. The money that was raised by the event will go to benefit the S. June Smith center and the Special Olympics. Alpha Sigma Alpha thanks everyone that came out and participated in the event and helped it be so successful. VOLUME 1, ISSUE 5 Page 3 Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated As the end of the semester vastly approaches, the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated are being as conductive as possible. This month they were involved in several campus and community events. The organization began the month with its “So Sweet” activity weekend. On Friday, cupcakes and brownies were provided for the campus and later that evening, a date auction title, “A Date with Zeta” was conducted in the Curris Center Stables. Funds were raised, in order to help financially assist the National Education Foundation, which is a national philanthropy that the organization supports. The following day, the ladies hosted a barbeque and entertained supporters with a yard show. Overall, the activity weekend was a success! Later in the month, Zeta Phi Beta was represented at the Murray Half Marathon, as “Spirit Team #17,” volun- teered at the Special Olympics track meet, and also assisted with Murray State University’s high school track meet. A few members also participated in the Spring 2011 Blue and Gold Football Game; wherein Ms. Audris Williams received MVP of the game! In addition, the ladies participated in the 53 annual “All Campus Sing” program. Zeta Phi Beta’s theme was “Girl Power,” hence the “Rosie the Riveter” inspired costumes. The ladies took home the Director’s Choice award, as well as first place in the Dunker’s Challenge competition. It is evident, based on crowd appeal, that the audience enjoyed the show. “We look forward to participating, again!” The Nu Rho chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated is becoming more and more visible on campus with its active members. It is always looking for ways to involve the campus, whether it is a com- munity service event, a scholarship opportunity or its most recent, “Logo Design” contest. Come join its members in upcoming May events: rd “Ladies’ Night” with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The world can change around you, but your dream will not. Responsibilities need not erase it. Duties need not obscure it. Because the dream is within you, no one can take it away.” -Unknown The fight against cancer has been raging for years. The disease, which claims countless lives annually, is a very real problem facing the world we live in. Through the endeavors of some, efforts are being made to combat the disease with increased cancer research and awareness. That said, the brothers of Alpha Sigma Phi have decided they would like to join the cause. Partnering with the Livestrong foundation, founded by cancer-survivor Lance Armstrong, the Alpha Sigma Phi’s set a plan in motion to raise funds for the foundation in a manner that would make Armstrong proud - riding a bike. Not just any bike though but a stationary bike in which supporters could pledge money for each mile ridden. Starting at 8 a.m. on Friday, April 22 in front of Carr Health, brothers started pedaling, hoping to trade off every 30-minutes for 24 hours straight. Though the event was not able to run the full time due to inclement weather, it surprised everyone involved as the fraternity exceeded its goal of 300 miles in just 18 hours, packing up the bike at 2 a.m. on Saturday after having ridden 425 miles to raise a little under $1,000. In addition to the Livestrong foundation the Richie McClerkin Memorial Scholarship will also benefit from the event. The scholarship was formed in memory of McClerkin, a brother of the Delta Tau chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi, who passed away on Feb. 9, 2010. Alpha Sigma Phi President Michael Rust said the fraternity has been extremely grateful to help however they can in raising funds for the foundations. "Bike-A-Thon was definitely a huge success," Rust said. "This being our first year, we didn't quite know what to expect but we are excited to continue this event in the future. It was a great chance to show the dedication to philanthropy that our brotherhood shares." VOLUME 1, ISSUE 5 Page 5 Alpha Delta Pi Sorority The ladies of the Epsilon Omicron chapter of Alpha Delta Pi have much to be excited about this month. April 7th - 9th the chapter had their annual Lionshare Challenge philanthropy event. This event was called “Hot Shot for the House.” It was a basketball shooting competition and it was held in the CFSB center in Murray. This event was held in conjunction with a national fishing tournament in which teams from all across the country competed to see who could catch the biggest fish. The winning team received $100,000 for their school and was crowned National Bass Fishing Champion. The Greek community was also invited to participate in a fishing contest. Alpha Delta Pi was paired with Pi Kappa Alpha for this contest. Alpha Delta Pi and Pi Kappa Alpha received first in this contest by having the highest fish weigh in. Each organization received $100. Along with the tournament there was also a fishing festival. The festival was all three days at the CFSB Center and “Hot Shot for the House” was a part of the festival on Saturday. Sponsors for this event were The National Guard, SONY, and many fishing companies. Each sponsor had various booths at the festival that featured various activities like rock climbing, cornhole, and a video play station. On Saturday there was a free concert to celebrate the final weigh in for the tournament. American Idol contestant, Bucky Covington, a popular country star, sang at the concert. The chapter also had their Founders’ Day dinner on April 8th at 7:00 pm. They honored their Alpha Delta Pi sisters of the past and present, and reflected on the past 160 years of their proud sisterhood. They honored their active members and their achievements from the past year. They also got a chance to showcase to their alumnae all of the great things they have done in the past year. The ladies of Alpha Delta Pi sang their hearts out in Murray State’s 2011 All Campus Sing. Music Chair Audra Kick chose a “Weather” theme for the chapter this year and it couldn’t have been better. Alpha Delta Pi is very proud of the ladies that participated in All Campus Sing and can’t wait to see what they come up with next year. The chapter will be having their sisterhood week during the week of April 18th. The sisters of Alpha Delta Pi will take this week to bond together and remind themselves of the true meaning of sisterhood. Tuesday they will have their chapter retreat and on Wednesday they will have Greek open house. Thursday they will have a day at the park and have a cook out, and on Friday they will have a movie night. On April 30th Alpha Delta Pi will have their Spring Formal, which will be bringing the semester to a close. May 2nd they will be having a mixer with Alpha Tau Omega, they will be enjoying a cookout and relaxing in the beautiful outdoors. THE OLYMPIAN TRIBUNE Page 6 Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated April 15th through April 16th, the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Eta Upsilon chapter, held their “Back to the Basics” Activity weekend. The first day of their fun filled activity weekend was held at Circus Skate where the first five participants were admitted for free. On day two of their activity weekend, the ladies of Delta reserved Carr Health and Bar-B-Qued for those in attendance for their kickball tournament. They supplied winners of the kickball tournament with medals to award them for their achievements! The ladies of Delta were delighted to bring such an event filled weekend to Murray State students! They would like to thank all attendants for their support. Also this month, Delta Sigma Theta also held their second “HYt the Books with Delta” program and participated in Alpha Sigma Alpha’s Teeter for Two program in which proceeds went to support Toys for Tots. Delta was overjoyed to participate in Teeter for Two. Engaging in Alpha Sigma Al- pha’s program not only allowed Delta to support other Greek organizations, but also promoted Greek unity. Along those same lines, Delta is happy to announce that they will be collaborating with the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha and Zeta Phi Beta for the first NPHC Ladies Night. It is the hope of Delta that this event will become an annual one. Later this semester, the members of Delta Sigma Theta will present the American Red Cross of Murray, KY with a check in the amount of $100 for emergency relief efforts.
