CAN YOU REALLY BE SURE?
+
Anvil's ASUC insurance scheme means you can...
It’s a tough old world, and work underground, once
done can never be seen. That’s why when calling
for underground support, Anvil can provide clients
with the security they need to know that a piling
job has been completed to really secure and safe
standards.
All Anvil projects are covered by the ASUC+ scheme
which is only granted to a few firms like Anvil who meet
the demanding safety and quality criteria required.
HOW DOES ANVIL DO IT?
The Floor Slab Support process
Continuing from ‘Below Ground’ Issue 16, in which Minipiled and Mass Concrete
Underpinning methods were described, here we show the Floor Slab Support process.
When an existing floor needs supporting to accept additional loads, or simply needs
stabilising Anvil can
insert piles through
the flooring substrate
- all without
disturbing the
building’s structure.
This method was
used recently at a
site in Newby Bridge
(see page 2) when
flood water seriously
weakened the floor
in some time share
apartments.

Silent Piling System, see page 3

OPEN ALL HOURS...
Anvil 24 hour service in action - across the UK
SECTOR: COMMERCIAL
GAME UK, BASINGSTOKE
Night project at Game...
A recent Anvil project called for work
between 10pm and 7am
Here at the Game Stores Ltd main UK distribution centre
Anvil were called in by main contractor Mezzanine
International Ltd. to provide underpinning support for a
new mezzanine installation in this busy warehouse. 8m
piles were driven using the new Anvil designed BHK II
silent piling machine into chalk, and tested after 24 hours
to accept safe working loads of 250kN.
The only problem was that this work was undertaken in the
Goods in/out area and had to be completed at night, and
then the area had to be accessible again in the morning.
Anvil staff slept all day!
SECTOR: COMMERCIAL
NEWBY BRIDGE, L AKE DISTRICT
...and another between 10am and 4pm...
This time it was the problems created by the heavy
flooding last autumn in the Lake District. Timeshare
properties were engulfed by lake overflows at Newby
Bridge at the southern end of Lake Windermere, resulting
in the foundations of these semi-detached houses
becoming seriously undermined.
Anvil had the solution - so long as the work was carried
out between 10am and 4pm with no ‘noise’ permitted
outside these times. Using the Floor Slab process Anvil
drove minipiles through diamond cored holes between the
raft foundations. Problem solved. Anvil staff adjusted to
daylight operations once again.
SECTOR: COMMERCIAL
SAN CARLO RESTAURANT, LEEDS
...and back again to the night shift!
At the soon-to-be busy San Carlo restaurant location in Leeds, Anvil were called in by
G F Holding Contractors Ltd, an established commercial fitting out company based in
Mottram St. Andrew near Macclesfield, Cheshire to provide structural support whilst
internal refurbishment work was carried out. This Anvil did using the Floor Slab support
system. Since the restaurant is located below a lawyers’ office, the owners of which had an
aversion to being ‘disturbed’ during the daytime and some legal muscle to hassle anyone
who did, this was once more a night job.
Anvil utilised 152mmø mole-driven piles to give support to a temporary internal structure, a
task particularly suited to these flexible and mobile machines. Job done – all secure. Anvil
staff ‘jet lagged’!

SPECIAL FEATURE
BHK II SILENT PILING SYSTEM
ANOTHER FIRST
It's been a long time coming, but the BHK II Silent Piling machine
gives Anvil a penetrating advantage...
Developed in conjunction with hydraulic engineer
Brian Hays the design brief was twofold. Firstly
a piling machine that could operate in confined
spaces and produce capping drives of 250 to 600
kN – usually for work in existing buildings. And
secondly because of health and safety legislation,
a machine that would not deafen anyone in its
vicinity.
BKHII emerged after 3 years development. It
has a 4m mast (instead of the more usual 6m)
and can therefore operate in relatively restricted
spaces. A special sound dampening construction
ensures that the pile driving action produces only
a reassuring ‘thump’ instead of the traditional
explosive ear shattering bang!
Unique to Anvil this machine ensures that the
company can offer a complete piling capability.
Anywhere... and at anytime!
The Anvil Website
Don’t forget - the Anvil website is
constantly updated with all recent
activities, case studies and news
about all activities.
In addition, you can also download
back issues of ‘Below Ground’ and
contact Anvil via the easy-to-use
instant contact form.
Of particular interest, the Anvil Site
Casebook is extensive and separated
into common sectors so clients and
potential clients can see the projects
relevant to their interests.
