IKEA FAMILY news 05 Real life inspiration - IKEA METOD Kitchen IKEA FAMILY kitchen planning appointment Meet a dedicated kitchen specialist who will sit down with you for 2 hours to plan your dream kitchen. They will take you through every aspect of the planning process from what appliances are needed, to all the small finishing touches like what handles are best for you. Back in July, we ran an IKEA METOD kitchen contest, where, IKEA customers can submit photos of their newly bought METOD kitchen. The winners and runner ups were selected based on the use of their kitchen shelving, kitchen accessories, lighting and a good blend of styles between the METOD kitchen and the rest of the house. Planning table at Kitchen department, 1st floor, IKEA Mega Bangna More detail at IKEA.co.th/kitchenplanning How did you know about the IKEA METOD kitchen? We were building up our house and were going to purchase an IKEA kitchen when we heard from our kitchen planner that the then IKEA range of kitchens were going to be phased out, so we decided to wait for the launch of the new METOD kitchen. Why did you design the kitchen the way you did? The winner gets their entire METOD kitchen fully paid for by IKEA. Our winner is the Lee family with family members comprises of Shirley and Wing Hong, and their two grown daughters, Rachel and Annabelle. Meatball 15 pcs + Soup 145 THB Normal price 185 THB 06 IKEA FAMILY news from 1 March – 30 April 2016 When they moved into their new 2,468 sq ft home in May, 2015. Their kitchen became a special family project. The family was inspired by the modularity of the IKEA METOD system which allowed the family to easily plan and put a kitchen together from scratch. We spoke to Shirley and Wing Hong who shared more with us about their kitchen. We designed it to be as big as the living room as we felt the kitchen is a place where a lot of interactions take place. Why an IKEA kitchen of all kitchens, and why the METOD? It is hard to find a properly designed kitchen. You either have a system kitchen or have a contractor to build it, where they’ll ask us what we want, and you’ll get the usual designs, which are very common. For a nice designer kitchen, it is usually very costly. For us, we helped my mum get an IKEA kitchen about 10-12 years ago when she moved into her flat, and from then till now, only the top of the kitchen was changed because of paintworks that were done to the house about 4-5 years ago. Other than that, the doors and frames were still in good condition despite heavy usage of the kitchen. The quality of the kitchen impressed us. Moreover, the METOD kitchen gives us a flexibility to do what we want with welldesigned kitchen units. Do you have a favourite part of the METOD kitchen? We generally love the whole look. The island is definitely a dream come true, and we love the accessories that came with the kitchen; the bamboo cutlery holders, and in particular the LED light in the drawers. Sometimes at night, when we just need to get a small item like a spoon, we don’t have to turn on all the kitchen lights to get it, but simply need to open the drawer to see what we need to retrieve. The sensor works very well and there isn’t a need for a switch so we don’t have to worry about forgetting to turn off any switches. If you could describe your kitchen to a stranger who has not seen your kitchen before, how would you describe it? Understated and practical. We love IKEA and have been purchasing the furniture for many years from there since we got married 26 years ago, so whether or not we won the contest, we’re really happy about our purchase. Next issue, IKEA METOD Kitchen Contest winners from Thailand and Malaysia will share their dream come true METOD kitchens. Please stay tuned! IKEA FAMILY news 07 Keeping it neat and cozy Optical illusion Opt for sliding mirror doors for your wardrobe to make the room look bigger saving on floorspace. IKEA FAMILY news 11 Set the table right Make meals memorable by creating the perfect table setting for the occasion. The basics • Before you can set the table, use a tablecloth, you can be creative by using paper instead and sticking tape to create your own ‘placemats’. It make a difference to how the whole dining setting • If you would like to create a relaxing atmosphere with light scents from candles, choose woody or non-flowery scents like vanilla and peppermint. However, keep these scents off of the table and only use them nearby, as perfume can interfere with the enjoyment of your meal. Adding finishing touches Informal setting • Add colour to the table setting by using napkins. Put two napkins in different colors or patterns in one napkin ring to give the setting a nice contrast. • Keep table decorations like flowers to a minimal size, you would want to avoid a situation where it becomes obstructive and makes it hard to see and talk to your dining partner(s). • Having a casual get-together? Hang decorations above the table to give it that fun, casual feel. • Set a theme or show your personality by mixing and matching textures, patterns, and colours. 1 Laying out the cutleries and plates • Except for the butter knife that should be placed on the butter plate, utensils should be placed for the first courses farthest from the plate and the utensils for the later courses closer to the plate. You should place the utensils so you use them from the outside of the setting to the inside of the setting • As people typically reach for water more than wine, the carafe or water jug should be placed above the knife tip, with wineglasses (red above white) to the right. Once that good old cuppa is made and you’ve got your coffee fix, hold the thought of throwing it out and give them a second purpose instead. 1 IKEA Veggie ball wrap Here is our IKEA FAMILY member, Kusum Nair’s own recipe. A note from Kusum “ I make these yummy and easy IKEA Veggie Ball wraps all the time. This is my go to recipe to make a mess free snack for my kids to take to school when I am in a hurry and need something refreshing and healthy. Also, this is such an easy recipe that my 9 year old son can make too, as it does not require any gas top cooking & with a little help from me with the microwave, chopping and grating for the vegetables.” Ingredients: Scrubbing pots and pans Coffee grounds serve a dual purpose when it comes to cleaning pots and pans. Grounds attract and absorb grease and oil, making them an ideal candidate (especially when paired with a little dish soap) for removing excess grease from a pan. Coffee grounds also have a perfect texture—strong and gritty, but not overly abrasive—for scrubbing and removing grime and leftovers from pots and pans. Just add some used grounds to a dish rag and you’ll have a scouring pad that absorbs grease 3 4 Rid smells off your hands Had to live with garlic smelling hands because they can’t be washed off? Used coffee grounds do the trick. It exfoliates your skin and rids it of dead tissue at the same time. Food for plants 5 1 wholemeal wrap 3 IKEA Veggie balls* 2 tablespoon grated organic carrot 1 palm size leaf of iceberg lettuce 4 cherry tomatoes sliced into halves (optional) 1 1/2 teaspoon mayonnaise 1 teaspoon tomato ketchup or chilli sauce Cook with it Compared to freshly ground coffee beans, used coffee grounds has a more subtle flavour which means it will not overpower your dish. After marinating, rub it on your steak before searing it to give it a fragrant flavour and a beautiful crust. * You can also replace IKEA veggie balls with IKEA Swedish Meatballs Add fine coffee powder to your plants to give your plants an extra boost and to keep ants away. Be careful not to add too much though, as it will make the soil acidic. Eau de café? Similar to baking soda, coffee grounds can serve as a deodorizer. Simply place a bowl of grounds in your refrigerator to suck up all the bad smells, or microwave it for a few seconds to rid the microwave oven of the smell of leftover food. 20 IKEA FAMILY news 2 Defrost completely the IKEA Veggie balls in a microwave safe bowl for 3 minutes in a microwave, turning the balls half way through the time. Next wash the lettuce leaf and wipe it dry using a kitchen towel & keep aside. 3 Place the wholemeal wrap on the microwavable plate and microwave for 30 seconds. You will need: Chopping board, knife, carrot grater, microwave safe bowl, spoons and a microwave safe plate. 4 2 1 Place the lettuce leaf on the wrap and add the 3 veggie balls one after the other and slightly press with the back of the spoon. 5 Add mayonnaise and tomato ketchup or chilli sauce over the veggie balls. 6 Add the grated carrots and sliced cherry tomatoes. 7 Fold the wrap as shown below.
