Maths Planning Tool Year 1 – Measures - Mass Please refer to this documentation when planning and for information to support SOLAR statements ( Assessment and Recording Tool) Pinterest Page can be accessed here - http://uk.pinterest.com/birminghammaths/ Moderated samples can be accessed here - http://www.dameellenpinsent.bham.sch.uk/moderation/ Please see separate documentation for children working below P8 Bridging the Gap Measures - Mass The introduction of the new National Curriculum in September 2015 means that a huge gap has opened up between the skills needed to master P8 and those needed to complete Year 1 in Mathematics. Six Birmingham Special Schools have worked together, funded by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCEMT), to look at ways of helping teachers to bridge this gap. It is expected to be useful to both SEN and Mainstream schools. This document tracks back to provide information on key steps that were previously covered using the old NC levels. BTG Year 1 Information in this box is taken from the New National Curriculum Year 1 Programme of Study for Mathematics Objectives Statements taken from Bridging the Gap Curriculum BTG Possible Teaching Activities /Outcomes Resources Bridging the Gap Levels All the Bridging the Gap (BTG) documents, links to resources, moderation materials etc are available here. To track back for children working below NC levels please refer to the BTG document BTG P1(i)-P8 available via the link above . BTG Year 1 Measures - Mass compare, describe and solve practical problems for: mass/weight [for example, heavy/light, heavier than, lighter than] Useful websites: www.k-5mathsteachingresources.com www.primaryresources.co.uk www.twinkl.co.uk www.teachingideas.co.uk www.snappymaths.com Objectives Pupils begin to use standard units of mass or weight (g, kg) to measure and compare quantities and objects BTG 2A Possible Teaching Activities /Outcomes They are beginning to make simple measurements of mass/weight accurately, becoming familiar with using standard units of 2B www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk www.topmarks.co.uk www.schoolsnet.com www.teachingmeasures.co.uk Given 2 objects (regular units i.e in 10g units) weigh and say which is heavier/lighter and by how much. Look at scales and read in g and kg. Weigh objects and read scales accurately. Understand that 1kg = 1000g. Remove labels from tins of different weights or have own labels available showing weight of objects.. Weigh and match to correct label. Follow a simple recipe independently measuring the ingredients Set challenge to pack a bag for space – limit on total weight. Give children pictures and weights of a variety of items. Child has to work out what they can take. Could also be done as practical activity. Practical comparison of weight of children ( sensitively done ). Can also compare to staff member Weigh 3 objects to within 100g and record Record weight of objects in g Begin to use g and kg to record weight. Fill 2 bags with chosen objects saying which is heaviest/lightest. Sort packaging for items measured by weight v capacity. Resources Variety of scales – electronic, balance, pan scales etc Concrete objects to weigh . Labels Variety of scales – electronic, balance, pan scales etc measurement They suggest suitable units and measuring equipment to estimate and measure mass / weight 2C They compare two objects, masses/by direct comparison 1A They measure and order more than two objects by weight using direct comparison. They order objects 1B 1C Visit supermarket- take photos of variety of items measured by g and kg. If available use scales in supermarket. Use photos for display. Measure objects using simple units i.e 10g, 100g to find correct amount e.g play doh, numicon, multilink etc Follow a simple recipe with support to measure the ingredients Choose scales to measure mass Decide which unit of measurement they are going to use to measure food ingredients or luggage for a holiday e.g. g or kg. Understand that g are lighter than kg. Concrete objects to be matched to suitable measuring equipment e.g fruit, bricks, milk, clothes, drink can, books– match to either scales, jug , ruler Compare 2 shopping items with a noticeable difference in mass Compare a range of objects with a central object and identify as heavier than, lighter than – use symbols and signs Given an object find something heavier or lighter than Feel the weight of more than 3 objects and put them in order by weight. Use objects that are heavy and light and put in order by weight. Mix objects that are small and heavy as well as those that are big and light to put in order by weight. Feel the weight of a variety of objects and sort into sets of heavy and light. Feel the weight of 3 objects and put them in order by weight. Variety of scales – electronic, balance, pan scales etc Concrete objects Selection of objects Symbols for heavier and lighter Containers Selection of objects Symbols for heaviest and lightest Items of different weights Weights Symbols for heavy and light These are snapshots of our boards on Pinterest.
