Bridging the Gap
Measures - Mass
The introduction of the new National Curriculum in September 2015 means that a huge gap has opened up between
the skills needed to master P8 and those needed to complete Year 1 in Mathematics.
Six Birmingham Special Schools have worked together, funded by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching
of Mathematics (NCEMT), to look at ways of helping teachers to bridge this gap. It is expected to be useful to both
SEN and Mainstream schools.
This document tracks back to provide information on key steps that were previously covered using the old NC levels.

Given 2 objects (regular units i.e in 10g units) weigh and
say which is heavier/lighter and by how much.
Look at scales and read in g and kg.
Weigh objects and read scales accurately.
Understand that 1kg = 1000g.
Remove labels from tins of different weights or have own
labels available showing weight of objects.. Weigh and
match to correct label.
Follow a simple recipe independently measuring the
ingredients
Set challenge to pack a bag for space – limit on total
weight. Give children pictures and weights of a variety of
items. Child has to work out what they can take. Could
also be done as practical activity.
Practical comparison of weight of children ( sensitively
done ). Can also compare to staff member
Weigh 3 objects to within 100g and record
Record weight of objects in g
Begin to use g and kg to record weight.
Fill 2 bags with chosen objects saying which is
heaviest/lightest.
Sort packaging for items measured by weight v capacity.

Visit supermarket- take photos of variety of items
measured by g and kg. If available use scales in
supermarket. Use photos for display.
Measure objects using simple units i.e 10g, 100g to find
correct amount e.g play doh, numicon, multilink etc
Follow a simple recipe with support to measure the
ingredients
Choose scales to measure mass
Decide which unit of measurement they are going to use
to measure food ingredients or luggage for a holiday e.g.
g or kg.
Understand that g are lighter than kg.
Concrete objects to be matched to suitable measuring
equipment e.g fruit, bricks, milk, clothes, drink can,
books– match to either scales, jug , ruler
Compare 2 shopping items with a noticeable difference in
mass
Compare a range of objects with a central object and
identify as heavier than, lighter than – use symbols and
signs
Given an object find something heavier or lighter than
Feel the weight of more than 3 objects and put them in
order by weight. Use objects that are heavy and light and
put in order by weight.
Mix objects that are small and heavy as well as those that
are big and light to put in order by weight.
Feel the weight of a variety of objects and sort into sets of
heavy and light.
Feel the weight of 3 objects and put them in order by
